Here are a few more promotions that are valid today, 2/11/09 only.
40% Off All Metalworking Products via MSC Direct promo code: MWMANIA40W
20% Off All Mechanic’s Tools and Tool Storage via Sears (coupon code SWELCOME02118 will take an additional $5 off $50+ orders. Thanks GJ member fxt!)

Now, I’m used to Sears overstating their sales a bit, but today’s is really weird. I checked a dozen items, one was actually on sale…
Trust me, you’re not the only one confused with Sears’ discounts; it does appear that “all mechanic’s tools” excludes many tools.
At first, it seemed as though only tools stocked at most Sears stores were eligible, but I have found quite a few in-store available tools that are NOT discounted, and quite a few online-only tools that are.
I suggest either checking back later today – maybe this ‘problem’ will be fixed, or checking back in a few days, as there may be a comparable Presidents’ Day sale.
Stuart – I’m trying to find a time when all of the following PN are on a good sale at Sear’s so I can pull the trigger:
Craftsman 4 pc. Thumbwheel Ratchet Set with Wobble Extensions
Sears item# 00934905000 Mfr. model# 34905
Craftsman 12 pc. Standard Easy to Read Impact Socket Set, 6 pt. 1/2 in. Drive
Sears item# 00915884000 Mfr. model# 15884
Craftsman 12 pc. Metric Easy to Read Impact Socket Set, 6 pt. 1/2 in. Drive
Sears item# 00915885000 Mfr. model# 15885
Craftsman Professional 12 pc. Standard and Metric 12 pt. Full Polish Deep Offset Box End Wrench Set
Sears item# 00946999000 Mfr. model# 46999
The last one seems to always be out of stock and never on sale so I was looking at:
Craftsman 10 pc. Full Polish Deep Offset Wrench Set
Sears item # 00987641000 Mfr.model # 87641
The last item is $16 off now. Should I pull the trigger or wait? $16 off seems pretty good but I would rather score all of the items on a great sale and shipped together to save some dough.
Thanks!
Kevin
Kevin,
Unfortunately, I have not seen the first three items on sale for quite some time. Items like those are typically only discounted during “all-encompassing” sales, such as the one today’s sale was supposed to be.
I have been keeping an eye out for the 12pc deep offset wrench set, and have also noticed that it is frequently out of stock, especially when they’re discounted.
As for the Craftsman 10 piece deep offset wrench set, you could try waiting for a better deal, but it might be a while. I have found that this set is occasionally inexplicably excluded from promotions such as “#% off Craftsman wrench sets.”
After 20% off and the $5 coupon, the 10pc set is $65+tax shipped – not a terrible deal. The absolute best price on this set that you could hope for in the future after a 20% discont, with a $10 off $50 coupon (these are rare), and with free shipping. There may have been a 25% off promo in the past, but not to my recollection.
Your best bet at buying all of the items on your wishlist at a discount is to wait for a tiered %-off sale, or a similar “x% off all orders” type of promotion.
Is the 12pc deep offset wrench set generally discounted the same amount as the 10pc? That is the set I really wanted, seems like two more big wrenches for not a lot more money.
I don’t think I have ever seen the 12pc on sale and I have been looking (not religously) for a few months.
Kevin,
I have definitely seen the 12 piece set discounted once or twice in the past. It is possible that it is not discounted now because it is currently classified as “not available.”
If you really want those extra wrenches, I recommend signing up to be notified via email when they become back in stock (it might be a while) and then just buying them at full price.
If you *want* these wrenches but don’t *need* them, you may want to set a deadline for yourself. If in your position, I would probably wait until Father’s day, and if the 12 pc set was still not available, I would just purchase the 10 pc set.
Waiting may not be the best option, however. A few months ago, there was a smaller 9 piece set available for $60. For only $10 more than one 5 pc set, this set included 5 metric and 4 SAE wrenches. I decided to wait and hold out for a sale on the 12 pc. There was no sale, and when I decided to purchase the 9 pc set, I discovered that it was removed from Sears’ product listing. I then decided to purchase the 12 pc set and then discovered that it was out of stock.
I don’t think that the 10 piece set will ever be discontinued as it is probably simply composed of the individual 5pc metric and SAE sets.
Stuart-
First, I like the site and appreciate the time you have taken to maintain it. Between here and GJ you’re a busy guy.
On the MSC discount, it does not work with the Drill Doctor (grumble, grumble), but as a new customer I get 25% off my first purchase… Not complaining just FYI.
Thanks again
Scott
Scott,
Thanks for the kind words!
Usually when MSC has a “metalworking” promotion, only products in the metalworking catalog and related, or explicitly mentioned “Big Book” product categories are eligible for the discount.
Although there are Drill Doctor products in the metalworking catalog, they may have been excluded for not being of the “Drills, End Mills, Taps, Inserts, Abrasives, Saw Blades, Tool Holders, Tooling Components)and Measuring Instruments sale categories.
You may want to hold off on using that 25% promo – MSC holds 35%-off promotions relatively often, and on certain models, Amazon’s price is still better, and ships for free.
