As part of Sears’ Labor Day sale, they’re offering some pretty decent discounts on tools. Gearwrench tools are on sale for 50% off. As we ranted about last time, they say “all” but really mean “some” Gearwrench tools are 50% off. All other tools are on sale as well! Some tools are 10% off, but I’ve spotted many at 15% and 20% discounts.
There also seems to be free shipping on $99+ orders, although we were expecting that minimum to be $49 based on our advanced sale info.
Craftsman’s new Nextec RA impact driver preorder has also been discounted, down to $80.74 from $100!

The “all Gearwrench” thing is frustrating. Nothing I actually want from them (double-X hemostats, long non-ratcheting full polish combination wrenches, etc etc) is actually on sale beyond $5 off here and there.
Sorry about that, but you’re not the only one disappointed. I checked my records, and the last time I took advantage of a true “all Gearwrench on sale” promo was a little over two years ago. There may have been one or more such sales since then, but none that I recall.
ToolGuyd is approaching its two year anniversary in a few months, and I don’t recall there being such a sale since we launched.
Thanks for the heads up on this sale. I took total advantage of it last week. Spent my entire monthly tool budget in the first 3 days of the month. Oh well, I got some deals that I just couldn’t pass up.
If I’m going to buy a wrench made in China, it won’t be a Craftsman. Especially when Gearwrench has a better chrome formula and costs less than Craftsman.
I do appreciate ToolGuyd letting me know about the sale. Thank You again.
You’re very welcome. I’d bet that the Craftsman wrenches are now being made in the same exact factory as the Gearwrench ones. I read something about “thicker chrome” but I don’t see that as much of a significant selling point.
The multiple sales on Gear Wrench products has really hit my tool budget (really a “mental budget”). I’m going to feel guilty for the next few months. I’ve bought sets from OSH (50% off, combined with a $20 off $50 coupon), Sears (50-55% off) and Ace ($34 list for $10). And I’m likely to buy another pair (both SAE and metric) of the Ace 4 pc ratcheting wrench sets.
There hasn’t been any buyer’s remorse that didn’t evaporate once I inspected the tools. The design and chrome look great on all of the tools. I’m still wondering if the Vortex sockets will fulfill their gimmicky promise, but I felt the same way about my first ratcheting wrench set years ago. And anytime that I question if I’m spending too much, I just look how much I spend when I buy a single tool open stock, or hear what people shrug off as normal handyman or car service bills.
That’s also how I picked up most of my Gearwrench tools as well.
I’ve heard some pretty good things about the Vortex pass-thru socket system despite their initial gimmicky impression.
Despite whining about the completeness of this deal, I did take advantage of it and among things I got were the Vortex socket kit with two ratchets and no screwdriver bits. I never took these seriously no matter what label was on them – most often Kobalt – since I already have a few toolbox sets of sockets and ratchets but at the price ($25) I had to have it and I figured it couldn’t be anything but an upgrade to my mobile kit’s sockets and ratchets, all misc China that I don’t mind losing in mud or using to press out a broken acc input shaft with a hammer and such. I’ve got to say I’m impressed with the kit, GW put together a no-nonsense ratchet kit at entry level price that shines. There is a bit more wobble than with my heavy duty equipment but it’s negligible. My only gripe is the tool tray/case is not labeled with socket sizes so people who have reading glasses but don’t like to wear them (my dad) may have to do some hunting and pecking to find the right driver.
