Wow. What’s the magnification on the util blade image?
The lens is capable of 1:1 macro. Since I used a camera and not a microscope, “magnification” isn’t available or easily calculated.
But, my calipers report that the height of the part in the image is about 0.135″, with the cutting edge (marked by the vertical lines) is about 0.1″ tall. Let’s say 1/8″ just to be safe.
So, 1/8″ of an inch appears to be maybe 2″ tall on my screen. So that’s 16x magnification, 20x at best.
Great pictures Stuart! I’m going to have to start taking my DSLR into the shop, the P&S just doesn’t cut it for macro shots. I really hate the thought of $1000s of dollars of camera and all the dust though.
Are you shooting off a tripod, bare handed, monopod, or something else? Are you using an external light source, or just the shop lights?

Normally I shoot with a tripod, but for these I was just playing around with the camera hand-held.
My lighting is usually just 3 spring-clamp lamps with CFL bulbs. I don’t remember what exact type of bulbs they were, maybe daylight? Definitely not general purpose ones.
I often use a softbox or umbrella with off-camera flash for larger items. Might make a small diffuser for macro work, or will reconstruct my lightbox.
I try not to expose the camera to dust or debris. Action shots are only taken when absolutely necessary, typically outdoors with the camera a distance away, and never when a fair amount of sawdust or chips are present.

Are these with the Canin 60D? Which lens? I have decided to get a 60D, and I think a Canon 100mm macro lens.

I ended up buying a 60D here in Houston at Camera Co-Op. The other day I bought a Canon 70-200mm L 1:4 4 USM lens at half of new price. The 100mm macro will have to wait.
