Dremel just announced their new Saw-Max, a handheld circular trim saw. The Dremel Saw-Max SM20-01 is designed for one-handed use and can make straight, plunge, or flush cuts up to 3/4″ deep. It can be used to cut wood, plastic, laminates, drywall, sheet metal, and tiles.

To change the Saw-Max between standard and plunge-cutting mode and flush-cutting mode, all that’s needed is a simple hardware and cutting wheel change. For flush-cutting, a wheel with a domed hub is used for what looks to be near-zero clearance.
A miter and trim cutting guide can be used to make accurate beveled cuts in baseboard. Several other cutting guides will also be available, such as an edge-cutting guide and 2×4 cutting guide.

Using the Saw-Max to Make Flush Cuts
The Saw-Max is scheduled to be released in the Fall with an MSRP of $130 and $139 CAD, and it will be bundled with an SM500 multipurpose cutting wheel and additional blades and accessories.
Dremel Saw-Max Kit Details

- SM500 Multi-Purpose Carbide Wheel
- SM510 Metal Cut-Off Wheel
- SM540 Tile Diamond Wheel

We are not yet certain if the $130 MSRP corresponds to the -01 or -02 kit, and we’ll update this post as soon as we have more information. Kit details are also subject to change until the tools are officially launched. Following Dremel’s recent kit numbering trends, we expect for the SM20-01 kit to includes slightly fewer accessories at a lower pricepoint.
An assortment of blades and accessories were developed in parallel with the tool itself, providing what we consider a complete system. Nicely done, Dremel!

- SM840: Miter and trim cutting guide combines the benefits of a compact power saw with the compactness of a miter box and works similar to a “speed square” for straight and miter cuts as well as bevel cuts
Dremel is known for their multi-tools, and more recently the Multi-Max oscillating tool and Trio. So why develop a multipurpose saw now? Dremel has reported that cutting accessories and attachments are their number 1 accessory category. Combined with their recent survey that shows many homeowners are turning to DIY, the Saw-Max seems like a logical development.

Not sure at the moment if I’d have a use for it………..yet but I gotta say it looks cool. Might wait and see if the price drops or it shows up on some Christmas time sales.
I think it’s unlikely that we’ll see any price drops before Christmas/winter holiday shopping season. Dremel said the tool will be released in the Fall, but I have a feeling that mid-October is most likely. Unless of course they sign an exclusivity contract with a home improvement chain like they did with the Trio.
Although the tool was just announced today, I’m already hoping to see a cordless version!
I could see this as a very handy trim carpenters tool for cutting out receptacles in Tall base board…It it can hold up to that type of use…But i’ll probably stick to my Jigsaw.
Its too bad that Dremel does’nt seem to like making cordless tools very much. Im waiting to see a similar head released for the JobMax/JobPlus system. Being that Ridgid has already announced a Jigsaw attachment for the same system, I can’t help but think that a circular saw isn’t far behind.
Realistically, something like this might not be as well suited for cordless conversion, at least until Dremel can gauge how much demand there will be for the corded version. But it is something to think about.
I’m also eager to see more cordless saws come to market. I know that Makita came out with a mini circular saw kit, but there hasn’t been anything similar from most of the other major brands. I believe that Ryobi briefly released a similar tool, and there’s a current Craftsman Nextec version as well.
I am so glad that I found this. I saw a commercial for this earlier this year, but couldn’t remember what it was called to look up on the internet. Thank you so much.
Just obtained one Great Saw would be nice if the saw disc were about a 1/8 Larger In Dia. Just cuts a finished !/2board . Just a little larger would would be really nice. It is a reral handy saw and I’m happy I got it. Thank You Dremel

what a great find! I needed to cut 20 2″ x 4″ holes in HARDY board. Every tool and blade i had was burning up within30 Sec. I went to the store to purchase more blades and stumbled on the Dremel SAW-MAX. took a chance, bought it and completed all the holes in abount 1 hour.
Now… Wanting to complete my SAW-MAX set with attachments and all I could find was the 2 x 4″ cutting guide – BUT WHERE can I get the EDGE GUIDE TRSM800 ? There is even a depression moulded into the plasic case for it. Checked all the stores that sell DREMEL and searched on the internet, but no such luck -
