Dremel Trio Different Handle Positions

A lot of people have emailed us asking about where they can buy a Dremel Trio. Well, the new Trio, a multi-purpose pivoting-handle rotary tool previously exclusive to Home Depot for a few months, is now available for sale everywhere else.

Dremel’s upcoming cordless Multi-Max oscillating tool based off a new 10.8V Lithium-Ion battery pack is also on the way and is available for preorder.

Not good – this tool only uses special bis that fit in the 3/16 collet. It can’t use normal dremel bits, nor normal router bits. So it is an underpowered baby router with a TINY selection of expensive special bits (that break easily). I like the handle and base design, and wanted to like the product – but the special bits will make it almost worthless.

I didn’t see the benefit of this over a Roto Zip. Costs more, less variety, etc etc.

Heard the buzz about this tool before it went on sale at HD. Did not have much in the way of expectations – although our installers do use Dremels for some fine light-duty fitting work. Saw it being demonstrated – and decided it was a nice concept but better suited as a hobby tool – not for serious work. But this is not unexpected Dremel has always positionned themselves for this market – and some specialty applications. This continued even after Bosch acquired them – and probably was reinforced when Bosch acquired Roto-Zip

Dremel’s router attachments are very, very popular in many hobbyist and enthusiast fields, so it kind of makes sense that they would release such a hybrid tool design.

As for the 3/16″ collet, it should be relatively easy to find various bits and burrs from industrial suppliers.

We’ve got a unit on the way for review, so we’ll hopefully be able to determine firsthand if the Trio is a gimmick or a handy must-have tool.
