NYC’s War on Knives

The other day I read that sporting goods and home improvement stores were being forced to contribut substantial resources to some type of “fund” because of the types of knives they were selling. Now, it looks like the Manhattan DA is going on a miseducated spree confiscating “illegal” knives at Home Depot and other stores.

Are gravity knives and switch blades illegal in NYC? Absolutely. But from the NY Times image of 1,300 confiscated knives, it looks like many of the knives are either unassisted or assisted-opening folding knives, which are legal. When’s the last time you saw a gravity knife sold at Home Depot anyways?

I’m all for getting illegal knives off the streets, but it looks like the DA doesn’t quite understand what the difference is between legal and illegal knive types. Unless of course I’m mistaken, since quite a few major retailers (Eastern Mountain Sports, Paragonn, Home Depot) have complied seemingly without much protest.

Watch out Macys and Bed Bath & Beyond, the DA might go after paring and steak knives next!

The Manhattan DA is ridiculous with his “war” on knives. I would venture a guess that more people are killed with kitchen knives than pocket or hunting knives. Are they next!?

  2. PutnamEco says:

Looks like they’re trying to emulate Britain with their foolish anti-knife laws. Over there, even their kitchen knives have anti stab tips.

How is that DA any different from the mob?! This is blatant extortion and bending of the truth!

Next they’ll confiscate my bench grinder, so I can’t sharpen knives.

NYC is odd… I live in Camillus NY, and the village emblem is a (Camillus brand) hunting knife! http://villageofcamillus-ny.gov/images/mast_new.gif
