Reader Jim sent us a brief but comprehensive review of Porter Cable’s 2-speed 14″ floor-standing band saw. The saw is designed for cutting hard and soft wood, and features a 16″ x 16″ tilting cast iron work surface. Here’s what Jim had to say about the saw:
I bought one of these saws recently at Lowe’s, and it runs like a singer sewing machine. NO vibration, tracks excellent, cuts oak, cherry, almond, without any chatter. Must be the 1-1/2 horse motor! The only thing that PC/Delta could include is the possibility of guide bearings, instead of those stupid metal things! A good fence would also be welcome – like the one that Grizzly includes on their 14″ band saw.
That’s one of the simplest and most helpful reviews I’ve ever seen for a band saw, thanks Jim!
You can find these saws at Lowes for $399 . Similarly sized saws via woodworking suppliers such as Woodcraft are priced higher and include a few more bells and whistles, but this Porter Cable doesn’t seem to sacrifice much in terms of features or performance.

For comparison, here is the Grizzly band saw that Jim appears to be referring to.

I recently purchased a 14″ porter cable band saw. One thing that is missing is a rip fence. Is there a rip fence attachment that is available from Porter Cable to fit this machine? I am otherwise pleased with this tool. The Saw is is well built and also has a good price.
Yes a fence is available to order from the factory. I ordered one and it works okay. Not as nice as some, but it works.
I just bought mine 2 days ago, and can’t get it to run with out band coming off or is to tight , Spent 6 hours today on it and still can’t run the machine. the roller pushes the band up against the table so tight the machine can’t move the band.
Each Blade thickness has a different setting. UNPLUG the tool and turn the wheel by hand to see how it tracks . See the mannual .YouTube has some good Ideas on how to install the blade. I have used mine a few times now and it is a nice tool for the money.
just purchased this saw about a week ago. works really well but is there a riser block for this machine cant seem to locate one online yet. dont want to purchase new blades until its raised.
No riser blocks are available. Delta version does not fit, PC says no plans now or in the future.
