A man was using a bench grinder and wire wheel to clean some rusted files. He was wearing goggles and gloves, but that didn’t help when a thin triangular file broke apart and flew towards his head. The projectile hit above the goggles and became lodged in the man’s skull!
The unfortunate man then grabbed his camera and took photos of his injury before seeking medical attention. Over the course of his medical treatment and two surgeries, he continued taking photos. Everyone should own and use a face shield when there’s the potential for high velocity metal projectiles. Face shields are cheap, and there’s no excuse for not having one.
Lately I have been using a Uvex Bionic face shield at home, and either MSA or AO Safety shields at work. Face shields are all designed to be used with safety glasses or goggles.
