More About Bosch’s New PS21 and PS31 Drill/Drivers

After our post about the new Bosch PS31 3/8″ drill/driver went live earlier today, I realized that the PS21 Pocket Driver is essentially identical to the newly redesigned PS31 drill, except for their different chucks (1/4″ hex vs. 3/8″).

Not only do the tools appear identical on the outside, the specs are perfectly matched as well, down to the 2-speed settings, the torque ratings, and even the 20+1 clutch settings. This was most certainly not the case with the previous single-speed PS20 and PS30 models!

What does this mean? Well, it means that Bosch’s engineers are very, very clever, and that while the PS20 is (was) a very capable and highly regarded tool, the PS21 will be far more capable. Bosch should be calling the PS21 a drill/driver as well, because that is apparently what it really is, at least on the inside.

Previously, Makita’s DF030DW 12V compact driver had seemed to have been gaining an edge over the Ps20 given its 2 speed settings and higher torque output, but the new PS21 delivers even more torque (265 in lbs vs. 200) from a slightly smaller package (5.6″ vs 6.2″).

It is hard to say whether Bosch’s PS31 will have a strong competing edge against other brands’ comparable models, but the PS21 definitely looks like it has the potential to be the champ amongst compact 1/4″ hex bit drills and drivers for a while.

There is but one gripe I have about the PS21, even before trying one out in person – where is the battery gauge!! The PS31 gets one, so why not the PS21!!
