Over a Kickstarter, there’s a neat high-power LED flashlight that is nearing the end of its funding period. The HexBright Flex is described as an open source light, and includes USB connectivity so that you can modify the source code. What this means is that users would have full control of the flashlight’s power settings and controls. Of course, you can always leave it at the default settings.
The HexBright Flex is said to deliver a whopping 500 lumens of light output, and features a single 18650 Li-Ion rechargeable battery that is user-replaceable if/when needed. The HexBright Prime is a “dumber” version of the flashlight and offers slightly lower output at a reduced cost.

Right now, you can preorder the HexBright Flex or Prime by funding the project on Kickstarter. What this means is that you pledge a minimum amount to help the designer get manufacturing going on the product, and in return you get a reduced price on the flashlight once they’re produced. There are also a few special perks that you can pay a little extra for, such as laser-etching.
The HexBright Prime costs a minimum pledge amount of $35, and the HexBright Flex a minimum of $60. The fundraising goal was $31k, but over 2000 backers contributed well over that amount, so the HexBright Flex is definitely a go.
The funding/preorder deadline is Monday July 18th, and chances are that the retail price will be quite a bit higher. You have to be a backer to lock in the fundraising prices.

I’m shy of discretionary cash these days, otherwise I’d go for one of the Flex models. I’ll still likely pick one up once they’re ready and released, although I know they’re shooting for a ~$90 retail price compared to a $60 preorder/pledge price.

I pledged for two, mostly cause they look nice and I think I could use them on the job (Police Officer). The only thing I do not like is that the beam is not focus-able, but that is a side effect of having a solid flashlight.
