Woodcraft put their 9″ x 12″ x 2″ granite surface plate on special for $20. A granite plate can be used for many applications requiring a true flat surface, such as sharpening and sanding.
To get free shipping, you need to pad the order a little with other items to bring the total over $25. These surface plates weigh about 30-35 pounds, which is why the free shipping is such a big deal.

Here’s a dumb question – can you use this is as a cutting board in the kitchen?
Some wood cutting boards are way more then $50, so this is a good deal.
I’m guessing it can be treated or sealed to be food grade.

It’s a bit on the small side to serve as a cutting board, but I don’t see any glaring reason why it wouldn’t technically be okay. On the other hand, it’s also a bit thick and heavy to move around. Having to move a 30lb slab of granite into the sink to wash won’t be fun.

I’ve had the Grizzly 9x12x3 for a couple of years now. These plates are excellent for sharpening virtually any type of tool. I also use spray adhesive to attach full sheets of 800 and 1500 grit sandpaper.

Hey the description says you don’t need spray adhesive, just get the block wet with water and the sandpaper will stick to it.

@uthscsaedu – I prefer spray adhesive, especially when sharpening large plane blades. I’ve used the water method before and didn’t have any success,

Wouldn’t a granite cutting surface dull a knife edge in no time?
Stuart
My impression is that yes, it would. Although Granite is one of the most popular countertop surfaces available, I too would hesitate to cut directly on it.
