A Reminder for RSS Subscribers that Use Google Reader

Jun 28, 2013 Stuart 4 Comments

If you buy something through our links, ToolGuyd might earn an affiliate commission.

As many of you are probably already aware, Google is shutting down their RSS Reader service on July 1st, 2013. This means that, if you use Google Reader to read new ToolGuyd posts, you’ll need to find a new RSS reading service right away.

In anticipation of the switch I started using Feedly to get my daily content fix. Right now they only allow syncing to Google Reader, but once the Reader shutdown is complete, Feedly will begin syncing and serving feeds from their own servers.

Feedly isn’t perfect, but it looks to be the best option right now.

Subscribing via email is another option, but you won’t have instant access to new content as you would with an RSS reader. Emails are sent out automatically every morning at 11am ET, unless there was no new content in the preceding 24 hours, and the weekly update emails go out on Mondays at 11am. Email subscribers only see headlines, while RSS subscribers will see full posts.

If you are resubscribing to your feeds manually, ToolGuyd’s feed is located at https://toolguyd.com/feed . Or you can also just do a search for ToolGuyd. We currently use Google’s Feedburner service to distribute RSS content, but seeing how they abandoned their Reader service I might reconsider this decision.

If you’re unsure of what to do or which service to try out, you should at least backup/export your subscription information from Google. You can do that via Google Takeout.

I’m finding that your photos do no show up in Feedly. There is only one other blog that I follow whose photos also don’t show up in Feedly. I’m sure it’s Feedly’s fault since they showed up fine in G Reader but I thought you’d like to know.

Thanks, I wasn’t aware of that issue. I did some tinkering, and it looks like images are now showing up properly in Feedly. I enabled a few other RSS readers and aggregators, and will add more if needed.

If you’re still having problems viewing post images in Feedly or any other RSS reader, please let me know!

I use Firefox’s bookmarks toolbar. It’s always been my favorite means of reading RSS feeds.
