Am I Missing Something? $1200 for Drill Bit Set?!

Beta Twist Drill Bits

This Beta 91 piece cobalt drill bit set costs a whopping $1213. Twelve hundred dollars for 91 twist drill bits! A quick check of a few industrial suppliers shows that a top-quality 115pc cobalt set can be found for around $800 or so.

The average price for each Beta bit is as least DOUBLE that of other industrial bits. Is there something special about these bits that justifies the price of the set, or is it a case of import fees and premiums gone wild?

I would expect that kind of price (probably more!) for carbide, but definitely not for cobalt.

The Beta tools I’ve received from Amazon were either Taiwanese or otherwise unmarked COO. I don’t have much from Beta, just some scrapers and punches, and they do seem to be good quality tools but I’d be hesitant of any non-Western drill bit at over $10 each.

It’s possible that Amazon/Small Parts only ordered 1 of these sets, hence the “1 left in stock”.

While this may be a legitimate (albeit too high) price for this set of drill bits – I’ve seen some doozies from time to time on Amazon. Here is a $100,000 box wrench:

That’s not really the same – the $100k box wrench is offered by a “Just Launched” newbie seller that’s probably just trying to become familiarized with Amazon’s store settings.

I don’t think this is the case of a mistyped number since it’s relatively in line with smaller Beta drill bits sets. They’re really trying to sell this set for $1200!
