Amazon Prime Day 2016, with More Tool Deals than Last Year (7/12/16)

Amazon Prime Day 2016

Amazon Prime Day 2016 is here. While initially hesitant that the deals would be as lame as last year’s, there are actually some decent tool deals included in this year’s promo day.

There are only a handful of all-day deals, but quite a few deals will be available throughout the day at limited times.

Shortcut: Amazon Prime Day Tools & DIY Filtered View

First, you need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber. If you’re not, sign up for an Amazon Prime Free Trial.

The all-day deals are valid today only, 7/12/2016, thru 3am ET 7/13, unless supplies run out sooner.

(Also check out their other deals. We found great pricing on diapers, a new gadget for the living room, and I’ve been tempted to buy a new memory card for my camera. Here’s the main deal portal page, you can filter the categories if you scroll down.)

Lightning Deals

Lighting Deals are limited-supply and limited-time deals. Adding an item to your cart usually gives you 15 minutes to determine whether to buy it or not, which is sometimes to keep in mind in case you find a hot deal that looks like it could sell out quickly.

There are many more, these are just the first few ones that looked most interesting to me.

  • Makita FD02W 12V Driver-Drill Kit (Now)
  • Williams TM-391 Torque Multiplier with Planetary-Gear Mechanism (7:50am ET)
  • Ingersoll-Rand 293 Super Duty 1-Inch Pneumatic Impact Wrench (7:50am ET)

  • Metabo W9-115 8.5 Amp 10,500 rpm Angle Grinder (11:59am ET)
  • Hitachi NT50AE2 Brad Nailer (12:05pm ET)

These are just the first couple of hours of lightning deals that caught my attention. For more, check out these links. One or the other might be easier for you to browse.

Amazon’s servers on Prime day cannot handle the traffic. Amazon keeps failing in adding items to cart. Amazon slow to load webpages.

If anyone can scale up, it’s Amazon.

I guess everyone is waking up and hitting the site at the same time?

Yost 10″ ductile iron woodworkers vise for $115. I’ve been watching these and they never go below $155. I’m just waiting on my 40lb box now 🙂

If I didn’t already have a Veritas vise waiting for me to find the time to install it, I’d be all over this.

I still might order one for review. Oy, Prime Day is hurting my wallet already.

I have to finally get to putting that Paul Sellers design workbench together now. I’ve had the SYP sitting in my garage for a couple months now.

I have 2 old Wilton woodworking vises with rapid-action nuts and 2 Columbian vises without them. The only quibble I have with a rapid-action nut is that depending on the thickness of what you are holding the vise can “pop” and release as you are doing the final tightening – requiring you to press-in and turn. I use the Columbians as tail vises and the Wiltons as face vises – on both sets I added rock maple faces – and on one I routed intersecting (1 horizontal and 1 vertical) “V” grooves in the maple faces to hold round objects.

BTW – if your vise handle does not already come with bumpers under the end caps – add an o-ring at each end to save some pinched skin.

I’ve found a lot more deals, but figure it’ll be easier to refer back to the main deal page links, rather than editing the post every half hour.

I know it’s not strictly a “tool”, but the Amazon Echo is marked down to $130 from $180.

Many of the tech shows I listen to love it. I just ordered it. They have the same deal on Prime Now and I almost ordered it there, but figured I could wait a few days rather than pay a hefty driver tip.

Hey Stuart – the Samsung Smartthings Hub Kit is also on a very good deal. Works great with the Echo… and compatible with all things Zigbee and Z-wave, etc.

As for the Echo itself… got one for my wife, but everyone in the family uses it and loves it. The home automation part is fun, but so much utility in that package. I highly recommend it.

Is the Dewalt 4 pc kit a deal? I’m having trouble understanding if the impact and the other tools are the latest greatest from Dewalt or if they are being put on sale to make way for a newer version that’s already out.

Outside of that, great workk ToolGuyD

Yes, more info about it here: https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-dck421d2-cordless-combo-kit-deal/

These are not the latest and greatest. This is what I would call a deal combo, although it comes with good batteries (2.0Ah). It’s a hard to beat value.

yeah, these are not Dewalt’s brushless ‘XR’ drill/driver, not the higher amperage charger, and includes the circ saw w/o the magnesium lightweight shoe. If that’s what you’re asking, I mean.

But they’re all solid tools and that is a great price. Most of these tools are around $80 – $100 bare, save the light. All of these tools have been around for a few years, but most, if not all, updates to the product line comes under the brushless XR series. For reference, just the premium compact XR non-hammer drill and impact driver + 2 2.0ah battery and quick charger combo is more than this 4 piece kit.

The ‘real’ 780 almost never gets actual discounts. Dewalt makes a cheaper version of the same saw that shows up around certain holidays, and sometimes includes a stand. I forget the model number (781 maybe?). All I remember is that it doesn’t include the xps light, but uses the same frame, motor, slides (but with cheaper bearings, reportedly), etc. for a few hundred less.

Anyway, best bet for a 780 on discount would be used from a respectable seller. I do see them pop up on Amazon’s used marketplace thing from time to time, but they go fast.

forgot to add: with all that said, the new 790 FV versions very well could lead to 780 discounts later this summer, though.

I might get the 790 if they offered it as a bare tool. I never plan on not having it plugged.

Both the FV 12″ saws (the slide and non-slide versions) are listed as bare tools, and kits. So it looks like that will be an option.

That might’ve been obvious, but I was wondering the same thing as all of Dewalt’s OPE 20v and 40v products were only available as kits for the first year. Was worried they may do the same with FV, but that doesn’t look to be the case.

There was the DWS782, and then I believe it was the DWS709 that replaced it.

On Amazon.ca you can get the Porter-Cable 3-Amp Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit with 52 Accessories for 89.99 Canadian. Usually the more limited kit is available at this price during holiday seasons. Great deal for all of the accessories. Nice price for a mid range tool.

The tool is similar to the DeWalt corded model, I believe it came out a few years earlier, with the DeWalt improving on it.

Would like to point out that Irwin’s 8-inch NWS diagonal cutters are also on sale. In Amazon’s search bar, the first option is “Prime Day,” which helps filtering more specific categories (e.g., “pliers”)

My locals Lowe’s’s have been stocked up on the Irwin NWS pliers at cheap prices (under $20 each). This coincides with Lowes.com not showing the pliers in searches anymore. I bet these are being sold out to not return.

I have the fuller set with the adapters and extensions, I think it runs $56 ish usually on Amazon. I have zero complaints about the sockets themselves, I’ve rebuilt two suspensions with them. The thing to watch out with Tekton is that they skimp out on cases, I’ve had to label mine with “TOP” and “OTHER SIDE!” Because they offer almost no hold on the pieces, only an issue if it lives in your truck and gets rattled around though.

One thing to keep in mind about retrofit LED tubes are the tombstones in your fixtures. Some tombstones (such as those in my garage) have contacts that are oriented at 45-degrees. Obviously that makes no difference for fluorescent tubes but for LEDs it means that your lights won’t aim straight down.

If your current fixtures have the 45-degree tombstones, you can either buy rotatable LED tubes (I didn’t see any of those on sale) or you can replace your tombstones.
