The best cordless drill kit deal for most people will be… Kobalt?! Yes! Their latest generation 24V Max cordless drill kit delivers 850 in-lbs max torque, 2000 RPM max speed, and the kit comes with a compact 2Ah battery.
There are other great options if you have other criteria, such as if you’re looking for a hammer drill, lighter and more compact drill, or are shopping at a different retailer. But if we’re talking about best overall, this – surprisingly – tops my list.
If you want to know what I would buy, it’s this Metabo HPT 18V cordless drill kit for $99. It delivers 620 in-lbs max torque – which is plenty and a great stopping point for a compact drill. The brushless drill kit comes with 2x 1.5Ah batteries.
Skil’s cordless power tool systems have come a very long way in the past few years.
Not to put it indelicately, but I’d take this Skil PwrCore 12V Max brushless drill/driver over all of the very many budget-priced 18V-class cordless drills in its price range.
Don’t let its modest specs fool you, 350 in-lbs is still a lot, and plenty for a tool this size. It’s a budget pick that bests weaker 18V and 20V Max-class “doorbusters” at similar pricing.
If you want a multi-functional cordless drill kit, this Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max kit is a fantastic problem-solver. It features 4 attachments, for 5-in-1 functionality.

The Bosch 12v multi attachment drill driver is the same price as the Dewalt you mention, $149, and superior in every way, in my opinion. More torque, more speed, more compact, faster change attachments, built-in bit storage.

That Bosch has an awkward belt hook, a crappy little charger, an un-ergonomic thick handle and the head locks are not super secure – very often I’d find that a head might just fall off as I hadn’t securely rotated the ring.
I’ve had the Festool, Bosch, Milwaukee and now just ordered the Dewalt multi-head kit.
The Milwaukee M12 version, at first glance is great, but has two glaring omission/FAILS: the reverse button is electronic and at the top of the tool where it’s quite awkward to access, and most importantly, the offset head, which is so handy I tend to keep it on the drill body at all times has no bit lock so you cannot drill with it right as the drill bit comes right out when exiting the hole.
Being able to drill with the offset head is as important and being able to drive a screw with it – huge fail on Milwaukee’s part.

The location of the forward/reverse button on the M12 really bugged me too, until another Toolguyd user (I’m sorry, I don’t recall who) clued me in: Hold it like a drywall screw gun instead of a standard drill. Now the Fwd/Rev button is right under your thumb.

Dewalt’s is a much better form factor in my opinion – skinnier handle, and you can place it down on the battery between tasks for quicker pick-up.
I bought into both Bosch and Dewalt 12V systems and would not buy into Bosch’s today. When is the last time they came out with something new?

I also bought into Bosch years back when they still had useful tools that *might* be coming to the US in the pipeline. They’re still not here that I’ve seen.
The tools I do own work well enough for home use. Am regretting buying in simply because I don’t want so many different batteries around the house going forward. Use Milwaukee 18v, Dewalt 20v and Makita 36v at work so have experience with those.
Already have Ryobi 18v for some of the weird/convenient things they have on offer. Inflator, sprayer, weed eater for quick jobs.

I didn’t like the bosch vs either the milwaukee or the dewalt; the dewalt has the most power of all three in speed 1 and has the most comfortable grip, which is the most important attribute to me.
All of them do the job they were designed for; it comes down to preference.

Yep. I have the Bosch Flexiclick. I really like it. I got a super deal on it last year. $115. Will replace with the DeWalt when this one dies unless we get more Bosch goodness here in the US. They all work. I like their tools and I really like the way the company is mostly owned by the “Robert Bosch Stiftung” – a foundation, which funds education and health care, and some “global issues.”

Agreed. The Milwaukee is a bit underpowered IME.
If you hold it like a drywall screwgun, the button on top is not hard to access with your thumb, unless you are in a tight place with it, then it is annoying to have to take out and change direction, then to have to do it again.
I was deciding on the replacement and was going to choose either the Bosch or DeWalt.
I am already in the DeWalt 12v line and their ergonomics are always top notch. That said, the Bosch is smaller in every dimension and this may be the only time a stem -style battery is a better choice to keep the overall tool height down to fit in small spaces.
YMMV, just my 2 cents on the subject.

The metabo has been tugging at my wallet, but I was thinking of buying my brother in law a cordless set, but he needs more than just a drill and impact and the only home store near him is a lowes, so I’m leaning towards getting him the $199 craftsman v20 kit. He can always add to it later from that Lowes.

If he’s a light duty user, the craftsman may be the ticket. That Metabo HPT kit is a GREAT place to start him with. The other Metabo tools are, in my opinion, a step up from Craftsman also. I think Metabo is at a very good place in the market. Better than homeowner, capable of doing pro work, priced enough below DeWalt, Milwaukee and Makita.

Out of curiosity, what’s your opinion on previous vs next gen Kobalt drill & driver? I saw Lowe’s had the 2 tool combo for $129 (and my local Lowe’s has 3 in stock). It would be just your run of the mill DIY projects, so nothing heavy duty that I’d be using it for. Is it worth paying the extra 70 dollars for the next gen versions?

At $129, and not tied to a cordless system, I’d go with the Metabo HPT.
At $199, there are a lot of other options by Milwaukee and Makita. Dewalt’s premium combo is $249.
$70 over $129 is not an insubstantial amount. I’m normally inclined to recommend the upgrade, but at $199 there’s a world of other options that muddy the decision.
It’s good to have available power. A few years ago I tested a bunch of competing $99 drill kits and cheaper combo kits, and really liked that Ridgid had a very superior option. That’s part of what steered me towards recommending the Kobalt – it looks to be king of the $99 special buys right now.
The next-gen combo also comes with 1-battery?
Is it worth paying $199 for next-gen combo kit righ tnow? No, in my opinion.
BUT, they do have a “get a free tool” promo right now, which changes things a bit. Although, there aren’t any battery options in the freebie choices, and so you would be getting 2 tools and a 3rd or an accessory and only 1 compact 2Ah battery for everything.
There are pros and cons, but personally I’d lean in other directions first.

I have the Kobalt hammer drill that is a few
Generations old. I really like it. It only gets occasional use. I use M12 for most tasks. The chuck is really nice on the Kobalt. Kobalt also typically has very inexpensive replacement batteries which is what swayed me. The only thing I haven’t liked on it is the side handle design is flimsy.

It seems there are so many Dewalt drill & impact driver kits this year but I don’t think anyone is offering the one particular combination that would get my attention: DCF850 impact driver, DCD800 (or DCD805) drill, and two 1.7 powerstacks.
There’s the HD deal on this page with those two tools but alas it has standard batteries. Rog posted about a similar deal Ace has in another topic here, that set is $229 and has two powerstacks and the DCF850 but it has an older model drill. Despite that, it’s honestly a really good deal even with the lesser drill. If this were more of a “need” than a “want” for me I’d jump on it.

There are separate “D1E1” combos with the new drill and DCF887, which each give you a compact battery and PowerStack 1.7, but that might be too much for what you’re looking for, and $189 x 2.
Lowe’s has a combo, also with the basic brushless drill instead of new XR.
There’s another combo I’m watching, with PowerStack and 4Ah batteries, but at the price you’re better off with $189 x 2 singular combos.
I’m watching to see what Black Friday doorbuster flash sales bring.

Skil has put out some impressive tools recently. I recently watched a video comparing different right-angle impact drivers and the 12V Skil outperformed both M12 and M18 Milwaukee, as well as Makita, despite being the cheapest tool in the competition by far.

Is that Skil 12v drill pictured a 2nd gen? I don’t remember it being that compact, as their 1st gen was the same length as the M18 Fuel 3rd gen drill.

The Gen2 12V tools are fabulous – 20V brushless, too!
The 12V seems to have been reworked in every regard, and disappears in my hand.
The older model was great, but a bit larger, which was forgivable for the performance it delivered, especially for its price point.
I grabbed it right now, opened the box, asked myself why I put the compact 12V drill back in a box with the 20V battery, and then realized it was the 20V drill.
Skil has done a fantastic job with their latest tools.

As someone who’s sworn off Skil after one too many wobbly chucks and worn-out sleeve bearings, it’s good to hear praise for the brand again. But I’ll still be on the sidelines until they have a renewed track record of improved long-term build quality.

Waiting is prudent, but I just wanted to make it clear that the Skil of today is not at all the same as the Skil from 10 years ago.

4 or 5 years ago I was looking to buy several 12-volt drills to use in my woodworking classes. Menard’s had a heck of a deal on the Hitachi 12-volt drill/driver combo. They are still working, but the line has been abandoned in the switch to Metabo.
I bought a Bosch 12v combo kit with the drill and driver. Not bad, but the handle is a bit bulky for my students with small hands. I really wish that I had picked up the DeWalt 12v line instead.
Now I’m wondering how long DeWalt will be making 12-volt tools. It seems that Home Depot has dropped the 12-volt DeWalt tools, which is making me have second thoughts about buying into that line.

I think Lowes has exclusivity on the DeWalt 12v line for big box stores, but you can get them at Acme and elsewhere.
I love my DeWalt 12v tools and ergonomics is top notch, as always.
