Following are new tool deals for August 2021, and I plan to update this post throughout the month. If you discover other tool deals worth sharing, please let me know!
Fair warning: August is usually a slow month for tool promos.
(Also please be sure to provide feedback! I am hoping it works out better to have one post that’s added to and updated throughout the month than x-number of shorter posts.)

Knipex 3pc Cobra Pliers Set
Gareth wrote in:
Just a heads up. 3 piece cobra pliers are on sale at Amazon. Usually $120+ now $102.
KNIPEX – 9K 00 80 05 US Tools – 3 Piece Multi-Component Cobra Set (7, 10, & 12)
I don’t see them on sale all that often.
This does seem like a good price on Knipex Cobra pliers for users that want all 3 sizes.
Separate Pliers:
At the time of this 8/4/21 update, buying the 3 separate prices would cost you $118.63 if you buy them separately. The 10″ are also promo-priced, as they’re regularly a little over $40. So if you’re looking to buy all 3 sizes, this deal at $102 saves you around $16-20 compared to buying them separately, and ~$18 over the regular 3pc set price.
Sale Price: $102
Milwaukee Hole Saw Set Deals
(EXPIRED – sorry, that was fast) Home Depot has this Milwaukee Tool 13pc Hole Dozer bi-metal hole saw set as a $39.88 special buy.
Over at Northern Tool, they have this Milwaukee Hole Dozer hole saw 12pc set (6 sizes) for $25.
Flotsam
The Ryobi HP stuff seems pretty stout. I bought their cordless recip saw a while back and is well designed and worked well.
Seems like there is a contingent of Ryobi haters, but i do think the current HP stuff is a good value. I still have all my Dewalt brushless drill/driver for almost 5 years and it has help up, but if i were buying today the Ryobi HP would be worth consideration.
Stuart
The compact brushless HP tools are really good, and in my opinion breaks the Ryobi mold, although I don’t know if they’d deliver pro-level durability.
Paul
There are five selling points with the premium brands:
1. Tool reliability/longevity. If I have to replace chucks/tools every year or two with those brands really does the reliability argument hold water? The Ryobi is somewhat more disposable.
2. Product line breadth. This is a great argument against several value brands but Ryobi exceeds premium brands.
3. Platform Longevity. If you’ve been burned by “fill in blank” getting discontinued and been forced to jump brands more than once chances are eventually you will end up with one of the three premium brands. Remember as a pro user I have over a dozen tools. Switching battery platforms is a huge hassle and costly. Far more than the money saved on one or 2 tools.
4. power/speed. Again Ryobi meets expectations.
5. Tool snobbery. Well unless you have nothing but Hilti or Fein you can’t win this one.
When Ryobi One came out at the time I was more of a Prosumer. My NiCd drill batteries were failing. I just couldn’t bring myself to downgrade from Hitachi. If I did then my next move to team Red might not have happened.
Jeremiah Ducate
I think festool falls in with hilti and fein for premium. Cant think of any other portable corded tool brands available here.
Steven
Glad ryobi worked out for you. I have contempt for them. Every ryobi tool I’ve seen has been poor quality. For example, they’re the only ones who make a compact lawnmower for my tiny urban yard. It works, but is cheap…plastic blade, top handles that fall out when you use them, everything is wobbly. I went to Home Depot to buy a leaf blower…was strongly considering Ryobi…then I picked one up…no contest. The Dewalt felt lighter and sturdier and like high quality dewalt…was basically the same price…AND had better specs. I tried like 4 different ryobi models, all the same thing…creaky, kind of unstable, lots of flex. The DeWalt was perfect, no perception of flex or weakness or flimsiness.
That’s my experience with Ryobi for everything. I try to be open minded and think “do I need money in the bank or nicer tools?” Their specs aren’t better. When you pick one up they feel less sturdy…and the kicker is they’re not really that much cheaper. I want to like ryobi. I like the idea of less expensive tools for more casual use because I am an amateur, not a tradesman…but every trip to Home Depot ruins it when I hold them in my hand.
For me, I take really good care of my tools, so they tend to last. It’s worth paying more when your tools last over 20 years. Dewalt is literally my favorite company on earth…moreso than Apple, Canon, my employer, etc. Their prices are reasonable, their quality is great and the best part is I can trust them.
I fully trust them. You cannot go wrong buying DeWalt (and presumably Milwaukee as well). Every product I have ever seen from them is high quality, reasonably priced, and well designed. In contrast, companies like Apple…good computers, phones, tablets…but their networking gear was garbage, their services are bad, their peripherals are terrible. I can tell someone…”Buy Dewalt, it’ll be fine.” For Apple, I have to say, “OK, buy Apple devices, but do not buy their mice unless you love uncontrolled scrolling and carpal tunnel, don’t buy their current displays, if they weren’t discontinued, I’d also warn against their networking gear, their cables are disposable garbage…etc”
Ryboi?..OK online, but seeing them in store makes me go with someone else every time.

The most recent emails I’ve gotten about sales have been OK – but nothing too great.
Zoro offered 20% off hand tools and some other categories – but their promo code was a one-time use.
All-Wall Tools is doing 15% off all sanding abrasives – using code SAND15 – free shipping at $50
https://www.all-wall.com/
Toolmarts/ToolOrbit – say they are having a 10% off on Tajima sale – so it may be worth comparing their prices to others – I also think that Toolmarts also call themselves ToolOrbit – or at least both websites seem to have similar sales and the same physical address.

Those Husky 144-tooth ratchets look interesting too. I think they might make a good gift, because they’re probably better than the usual ones for most applications, but not so much better that people would buy them for themselves.

Who needs more bulky ass tape measures?
It’s near impossible to find a small accurate 12-16’ tape measure. Unless you’re framing or building a deck, who would want a bulky 25 footer, aside from the fact most guys only use them.
When I’m doing interior cabinetry, tile, etc work, even a 12’ will do, but finding one worth a darn is difficult.
Stuart
Users who want longer or straighter standout.
Julian Tracy
Point being – there’s already 15-20 quality options out there, but zero options for a kitchen installer or cabinet making or tile layout accurate 12-16’.
Even those that need standout or long measurements don’t need yet ANOTHER option; plenty to choose from already.
Stuart
Surveys show that 25′, 16′, and 35′ are the most popular sizes.
There are good quality 12′ to 16′ tapes out there, and ones that aren’t as bulky as popular super-standout ultra-durable models, but they’re not priced as aggressively.
Julian Tracy
None readily available at HD, Lowe’s or Menards that I’ve found. Either bulky cases and 1” wide blade 16 footers or tiny shit quality 12 footers.
I’m working through 5-7 new old stock Starret 12’ tapes made in USA, but those are no longer available.
fred
My experiential base is now getting outdated – but some of our guys (others did not) seemed to like some Komelon Tapes.
You might be able to spot one in the wild at a Lowes and try it out before purchase. Made in China – so I’m not sure if QC is an issue these days.
Mike

I picked up one of these a few months back, love the ‘control stop’ feature; small window on the bottom where you can grip the tape to stop it from retracting.
Blocky
I like the Stanley tylon-coated 16′ — 3/4″ wide tho I haven’t seen them in store in awhile.
Also sometimes use a mini craftsman 12′ or DeWalt 9′ (1/2″ wide) when measuring interior spans for custom crate packs.
Been meaning to pickup some tajima tapes. They seem to have a good variety of 16′.
Keiko
Look and do some research. Fisco brand tape measures are affordable, functional, available is a variety of lengths and have a certified blade accurate to EC Class I. Your search is over. Established and respected brand out of Britain. Due to their repeatable accuracy and durability, they are highly regarded in the custom boat building and metal fabrication industries.
MM
I have a decades-old Fisco I inherited from my father and I still use it. They are indeed made to last…or at least they were.
Peter Fox
I agree there are not nearly as many good options for small tape measures compared to obnoxiously large tape measures. Not every use of a tape measure is framing a McMansion, standout is almost meaningless spec to me.
I have found the Komelon Professional series to be decent. I keep an 12 foot 3.5 meter one on my tool. It is definitely better than anything from Stanley or Dewalt in that size range that I have seen in recent years.

I have a bulky 16′ for measuring projects and jobsite use (kitchen and bath remodeler). As mentioned, I need the stand out ability on jobsites. But in my home shop, my go to is a 16′ Lufkin Pro Series (model PS3316). It’s small, has 32nd markings up to 12″ and is holding up quite well. Check one out
KurtW
I’ve had good luck with the FastCap ProCarpenter tapes. I use the Standard Reverse (green) version most, but I have the yellow and blue ones too. I just keep some extras in the truck since I have to order them. They’re all available in 16′ and you can get the Metric/Standard in 12′, and the Standard Reverse in 6′.
Shane
Sold out but I am glad to see that 18 V miter Saw make an appearance again. I thought they had fully abandoned it.

Note: If your ordering anything from Acme tools, take a look at Dewalt 31 piece ratcheting hex set. I think the same set sells for around $7 more on Amazon. Looks like a good price at Acme. Check it out if your looking for a hex set.
Plain grainy
Set is at this time $22.99 at Acme. It has been running between $29-31 at other sites.
Stuart
Here’s the link via Acme Tools
That does look to be a good price! I bought this set a few years ago, but it’s either buried in a box somewhere or I might have already given it a way. It’s a great driver, but I found myself with way too many overlapping tools and the case took up too much space in my primary tool box.
Plain grainy
I wish they put this set in the stackable yellow top tough case.
DrDoug
Don’t forget the small Dewalt 9-ft tape that was mentioned here a while ago: https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-9-foot-pocket-tape-measure/
I’ve been enjoying having these around in the shop and a few other places where the larger tapes are overkill.
Doug
DrDoug
I forgot to mention that I’m also still using an old Husky 6’x5/8” (2m x 1.6cm) tape that’s usefully small and has the useful to me, combined imperial/metric markings.
kipp
Stanley Powerlock has been my go to. Priced right $7 to $9 bucks. Tried most major brand tapes always come back to a 16′ Powerlock.

That Makita compact router deal is a steal!
I already have a few but I’m definitely ordering another one to have as a backup.
These are excellent routers for CNC.
Jon
Lowes, Acme, CPO are offering a free Dewalt 12v tool with the purchase of the 12v drill/driver set for $200.
Lowes and Acme offer the new 12v 1/2 impact with the promotion.
Stuart
Thanks! CPO has the new bandsaw as an option, and Lowe’s has the new circular saw.
Nathan
related to the cresent tools – they now offer a flare crowfoot set marketed as crescent but as far as I can tell it’s also the gearwrench set. For the money for just a low use tool I highly recommend them.
when you need a flare nut style crowfoot they do come in handy but not 300 dollars for a set handy. so a solid made cheaper set is a good add if you work on cars/tractors etc.
I like a flarenut style over the open end crowfoot because it holds tighter

I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the 5-tool Kobalt XTR kit with rolling case for $349 at Lowe’s. Metabo HPT also has a 5-tool kit (which includes the Multivolt 36v circular saw and the 18v Triple Hammer) for $399. Both compelling options!

They don’t appear to be on any special sale – but Infinity is offering what look to be a nice set of Narex chisels:
https://www.infinitytools.com/narex-7-pc-richter-bevel-edge-chisel-sets
Stuart
I have had good experiences with Narex’s budget chisels before. But for someone spending several hundred dollars, why not splurge a little more per chisel for Lee Valley Veritas or Lie-Nielsen?
fred
I have a set of 9 Lie-Nielsen socket chisels – 1/8 to 3/4 inch bought in 2007. Out of the box they were fairly sharp with dead flat backs. They only needed a bit of honing to put them to use. They hold their edge very well between honings and I’ve only resharpened them a few times in the 14 years that I’ve had them. But I do not use them everyday.
I’ve not tried the Richter premium Narex chisels – ($299 for a set of 7) – but 6 Lie-Nielsens would cost $385 and you would not get the largest (1-1/2 inch) and presumably most costly size. The largest socket chisel that I own is a 7/8 inch from Ashely Isles – and when I need (seldom) something larger (1-1/2 inch) I turn to an old Stanley 40-1/2 pocket chisel (probably out of production for 50 years or more.) The Veritas chisels also seem to stop at 1 inch – but as I said that doesn’t seem like a tragedy. A 5 piece set of the Veritas cost $429
As I said in my post the $299 price doesn’t seem like anything special – but the Narex set might be worth a look should it go on sale.
fred
I should have also said that for about 1/2 the price it might be worth looking at the Stanley Sweetheart line. From comments I see on Amazon – the steel used is good – but the chisels may need to have their backs flattened, their edges sharpened then honed – before use. But if you’re willing to invest some time and effort – they might just be a bargain.
https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-16-793-Sweetheart-Socket-Chisel/dp/B0051PCQ7Y/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=lie-nielsen%2Bchisel&qid=1630099800&sr=8-6&th=1
fred
Looks like the Amazon prices on the Williams ratchet, Dewalt barn coat and Makita saw blade have gone up. Nothing too surprising. Amazon sometimes seems to drop prices quite a bit when an item has only 1 or 2 in stock – then when those sell – the price likely returns to some normal level. I’m sure that they have other strategies/algorithms to adjust prices too.
Mike S
Sorry – I guess I got the last one at that price late last night!
Mike S
Hey Fred – that Makita tracksaw blade is back on sale now…
fred
Thanks
Albert
Will that “cordless plung saw” blade work with Makita’s corded track saw? It has a narrower kerf compared to the stock blade. Will it not touch the splinter strip on the track and throw off every cut by a hair?
Mike S
When you replace the blade, I believe, they suggest that you also replace the splinter guard. There could minute (within tolerance) variations between blades, and so the only way to be sure that the blade and splinter guard are perfectly aligned is to install a fresh guard with a fresh blade.
Charles_A

I almost bought the Mitutoyo 6″ metric calipers on Amazon but, fortunately, I stumbled on 6″ Mitutoyo Digimatic 500-196-30 calipers at Global Test Supply for $98.50 ($126.50 on Amazon – $161 MSRP). Added a pair of alligator clips to get up to $100 for free shipping + they didn’t charge sales tax (which is like an additional 10% discount where I live)!
