Wera Koloss Ratchet with Hammer Function

Mar 24, 2010 Stuart 6 Comments

Wera has recently announced the Koloss, a new heavy duty 1/2″ drive addition to their lineup of innovative ratchets. Even stranger in appearance than Wera’s swivel-head Zyklop ratchet, the Koloss features a ratchet built into a hammer head. Yes, that’s right, the Koloss is a real ratchet-hammer combo tool that is said to be unbreakable.

Non-Marring Hammer for Woodworking?

Mar 16, 2010 Stuart Discuss

I spotted this tiny non-marring hammer over at a recent Woodworking show. With dime-sized replaceable brass and plastic heads, this hammer is most likely used for precision tool setup or maintenance, unless there are other woodworking applications that I’m not yet aware of.

Ryobi Auto Hammer Hands-on Review

Feb 4, 2010 Stuart 15 Comments

Ryobi’s cordless Auto Hammer is designed to drive nails up to 3-1/2″ long, operate in tight spaces, and eliminate manual hammering entirely. In fact, Ryobi claims that with their new Auto Hammer, hammering has never been easier. With claims like these, we just had to put the tool to the test! For a detailed overview of […]

First User Reviews of the Paulding Hammer

Jan 22, 2010 Stuart Discuss

The first user reviews of the Paulding Hammer have started pouring in. Here is what Sam S. shared with us via a comment about The Hammer: I purchased one of the pre-production models of this hammer from Paulding and consider it the finest of my tools, and I have no light weight assembly of tools… […]

A Preview of the Spectacular Paulding Hammer

Jan 19, 2010 Stuart 13 Comments

The Hammer, designed and crafted by John Paulding, is by far one of the most magnificent tools that we have ever laid our eyes upon. Still, merely describing The Hammer as a machinists hammer, as exemplary as it is, would never do it justice. Not just a tool, The Hammer is a work of art!

Ryobi Auto Hammer vs. Craftsman Hammerhead

Nov 3, 2009 Stuart 15 Comments

Update: Since writing this post, we have published a hands-on review of Ryobi’s Auto Hammer – click here to check it out. At first glance, Ryobi’s 12V ONE+ Auto Hammer closely resembles Craftsman’s 12V NEXTEC Lithium-ion powered Hammerhead Auto Hammer. Well, looking at the specs, the two cordless hammers are far more similar than they are different […]

Intro to Dead Blow Hammers

Aug 3, 2009 Stuart 6 Comments

A dead blow hammer is a type of mallet designed to deliver strong blows with minimal rebound.  The head of a dead blow mallet is hollow and filled with sand or shot. Because of this, the force delivered by each strike is spread over a greater amount of time, thus reducing rebound while minimizing damage […]

Craftsman Nextec Auto-Hammer Revisit

May 22, 2009 Stuart 2 Comments

A television commercial promoting the Craftsman Nextec Auto-Hammer has aired recently – no doubt targeting Father’s Day gift shoppers, so we’ve decided to revisit it. Although it may still seem a bit gimmicky, the Auto-Hammer is innovative enough that it deserves the attention.

Gearwrench Indexing Nail Puller

May 12, 2009 Stuart 1 Comment

Gearwrench has recently (and quietly) released a new tool – a 12″ indexing nail puller. This tool combines the efficiency and ease of a cat’s paw puller design with the convenience of a pivoting lever arm with 180° of swing. This indexing puller is intended to be used in tight quarters and between closely spaced beams, and likely performs […]

There’s Nothing Like a Good Dead Blow

Apr 6, 2009 Stuart Discuss

The main advantages of a dead-blow over a standard rubber mallet are the reduction of recoil and increase in striking control. The dead-blow excels in loosening stuck or stubborn parts, and also comes in handy when a breaker bar cannot provide enough leverage to turn a fastener by itself. Stanley’s 21oz Compo-Cast is my dead-blow of choice, […]

Craftsman NEXTEC 12V Auto-Hammer

Feb 2, 2009 Stuart 4 Comments

Craftsman released its new 12V NEXTEC series of compact power tools before the winter holidays, and performance reviews are starting to roll in. One of the more innovative tools of the Nextec series is Craftsman’s new Hammerhead Auto Hammer. The Auto Hammer’s compact size makes it well suited for areas too tight to swing a traditional hammer, as […]
