I was browsing for tools recently and came across an Estwing axe over at Sears’ website. Behold, the Fireside Friend Splitting Tool! Great for splitting those friends that never return borrowed tools!
Okay, so someone goofed and didn’t properly punctuate or edit the title or description of the axe. Surely other retailers’ were wise to how the wording “Fireside Friend Splitting Tool” sounded, right? Right?

Nope. We took a look at the Estwing tool listing via Amazon, and it wasn’t much better – Estwing Fireside Friend Axe. Then, in the product description: “Estwing” Fireside Friend Splitting Tool. Shouldn’t they have instead quoted the “Fireside Friend” part?!!
Also included in the product description: Forged one piece solid steel construction to eliminate loose heads.
I had first discovered this oddity about a month ago, and earlier today decided to see if the product description had changed. It did not, but I did notice that the price had increased by just a little bit. The original price had been in the neighborhood of $30-40.
The current price? A dollar less than one hundred billion dollars, or $99,999,999,999! But, if I sign up for an Amazon Visa card, they’ll take $40 off the order, making it $99,999,999,959!! What a bargain!
So not only is the Estwing Fireside Friend Splitting Tool the cruelest tool ever for encouraging the splitting of friends, it is also the most expensive hand tool ever. It’s too bad that shipping is $8 and not free – this sets the price of the tool slightly above my budget.

Note: Please don’t take this post too seriously. Product description and pricing errors are common in today’s world; this just happens to be one of the more hilarious compounded ones.
Edit: It looks like the pricing error has been fixed. The Estwing Fireside Friend Splitting Tool is now (correctly) priced at $37 – a lot less than the previous $100 billion!

The $8.05 shipping charge kills it for me.

Toolguyd is getting weirder and weirder
uthscsaedu
and why am I still getting emails from Sears about Black Friday??
Stuart
Well, that’s probably part of their “Black Friday Now” promotion. Their goal was to feature Black Friday prices every weekend from Halloween to Christmas.
As for ToolGuyd getting weirder, just imagine the strange observations and odd deal finds that we don’t tell you about!

I feel your pain.
Those who write ad copy and product descriptions professionally should pay more attention.
Any written content destined for the public eye should be of sufficient quality to promote a professional image.
It is a sad fact that most people don’t even seem to notice or care these days. I blame it on the “dumbing down” of the population and the promotion of laziness as a virtue.

Hmm I need about a gross of them. Wonder how many friends it takes to wear one out.
Seriously though the mistakes that are being published today would never have occurred a few years ago. The really bad part is these mistakes are creeping into our literature and even into our text books.
