Our friends over at Toolstop have just confirmed that Dewalt will be releasing 4.0Ah 20V Max/18V XR cordless tool batteries, at least in the UK market. These batteries provide a third more runtime than 3Ah lithium-ion batteries and recharge in about 70-minutes.

The new 4.0Ah battery packs also feature a built-in power gauge.
Now that we know for sure that Dewalt is coming out with 4.0Ah battery packs, at least in limited markets, we wonder if the release will precede with any new power-hungry cordless tools.
While we know that these new batteries will be released in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, no formal announcement has yet been made regarding their USA availability.
The new batteries will be included in some of Dewalt’s premium 18V XR cordless tool kits.
(Note: Dewalt markets similar tools as “18V XR” in Europe and other countries, and as “20V Max” in North America.)

Where’s the battery gauge?
Stuart
On the reverse side of the battery pack.

I was just surprised there was no mention of them having battery gauges in the write up.
Stuart
I didn’t mention the power gauge because I didn’t see it officially mentioned. Thus far there don’t seem to be any production samples in the wild or any formal product announcement.
The only evidence of a gauge is in the product family photo shown in the ToolStop post.

Any thoughts as to why Dewalt puts out cool stuff in the UK first?
Stuart
Don’t worry, some cool stuff is scheduled for USA release. =)
Fred
UK is a smaller market, and easier for them to recover/rectify any products that don’t live up to the marketing. They can see it in a real world market without having the artificial limitations or false conclusions associated with a limited release. Bosch does similar launches elsewhere in Europe.
The mains in the UK are 230v, just like most of the rest of the world. So they can release the tools worldwide if the UK launch is favorable, compared to our 120v which is used in fewer countries, and the ones that do don’t always use the same phase/frequency.

70min charge time….that is a bit long considering others have 30 min charge times. I can have another battery ready and fully charged, so the 1/3 more battery life is not a benefit. If you add a brushless tool to the mix it skews the numbers even more.

Brushless would aid the extra power equally. But I can’t see why it actually taking that long.

More power into the cells takes longer. Its that simple.

I use my 20volt cordless circular saw everyday framing. Plug one of these new 4ah battery’s onto it, and it feels like a new saw. 10 to 20% more peak power. Longer run time too. In the cold -20 C, they are the only battery’s that keep going. I fully recommend using these battery’s on all the high load 20 volt tools. The cells are able to take the large surge loads better than the older ones. The high load tools are the circular saw, 3 speed hammer drill, and the worst is the angle grinder. It will heat any of the battery’s up.
