New Dewalt DS450 Tough System Wheeled Tool Box

Dewalt DS450 ToughSystem Wheeled ToolBox

Over in the ToolGuyd forum, Szymon surprised me with a post about this new Dewalt ToughSystem DS450 wheeled tool box.

Just the other day someone asked about whether the Ridgid Pro rolling tool box was available at other dealers, since their employer couldn’t order from Home Depot. I mentioned the Dewalt ToughSystem as an alternative, but that they lacked a rolling tool box.

Until now!

There’s not much information available just yet, but we do know the important bits.

As part of the Dewalt ToughSystem lineup, the new DS450 has heavy duty metal latches, and you can stack and latch additional boxes right on top of it. There are off-road-looking wheels with a wide and stable stance.

I can’t tell if the handle extends and collapses, but it doesn’t look to. There’s a top handle to the box, so maybe it can be removed? Can the square tubing of the handle be used with the same brackets as the larger carrier cart?

There are a lot of questions, but some certainties. For one, the $59 price is quite appealing. We’ll know more once when it’s officially announced or released.

And if you have not yet checked out our 5 Hot New Tools from Dewalt’s Media Event post, definitely take a quick loose. Dewalt is coming out with a ToughSystem wall mount system!

First Thoughts

We’ll share more as we get more info. I am a big fan of Dewalt ToughSystem products, and have high expectations for this roller cart and tool box combo. You lose some tool storage volume due to the wheels – just look at the bottom rear of the tool box – but you get a convenient handle.

As someone who has had to lug fully loaded large and x-large Dewalt ToughSystem cases around, I am glad to see a built-in cart option.

And that yellow thingie built into the bottom of the long handle? It looks like that’s for holding the tool box open via the top handle. That would be sweet!

Thank you to Szymon for the heads-up!

I’m a little worried on the quality of this considering a 400 size tough box is $60-70 and the cart dewalt offered was $189.

I still believe the best cart is plywood and casters, however others may need the off road wheels. I don’t drag mine through mud. http://360.io/jgm5xW

I don’t think the square tubing is mean to accept the bracket that you are thinking of.

To me this looks like an alternative to the big cart (which is too big for me).
I think this is mean to be use with maybe another box or two.

Yes a wooden platform dolly is best. But when you encounter a sidewalk/curb or a few steps it sort of make it a little troublesome.

Come on dewalt. Release this thing already.

I almost bought into the Rigid system, until I saw this.

I did buy into the Rigid system because of the cost of the Dewalt cart.

This is due out shortly I believe. TIA forum had this up ages ago. The DS130 USA made small box as well. Handle looks telescopic to me, this is much better for most than the wide-as-a-fridge cart they launched with.

In the Dewalt subsection of their forum. Regardless, the point I was trying to get across was that it’s exciting this is leaking more places, I want them to take my money already. Especially for a few 130s, which look even better for drills, etc. than the 150.

The original cart had 2 problems it was big as hell, and expensive. The cart was expensive as all the tough boxes on it.

Yes, but it’s also very capable in even and uneven terrain, and is capable of moving heavy loads.

I even took it up and down stairs once.

I just bought into this line and am surprised this wheeled unit looks to have no provisions for the metal locking tang behind every box. One point that surprises me is the lack of structural support under the bottom of the large and extra large models. It’s the weak point that will see the most abuse, being slid across concrete and other abrasive surfaces. I’d be interested to learn if the wheeled box has addressed this.

It’s funny that these debates mirror almost verbatim photographer’s carrying issues.
That said amongst our (photo-centric hard cases) only Pelican and even heavier Avil-like brands prevail. Halliburton aluminum long ago went offshore and can’t compete with modern composites anyway.
I looked at literally everything from my hard case photo experiences and to my surprise bought Rigid. The whole set except the newest crates. Can’t figure out any need for them at this point.
All while not counting various (soft side) Veto Pro Pacs that I love and the kinda thin walled L-Boxxes.

And my Flexvolt circular saw is supposed to ship tomorrow (we’ll see if that actually happens) and looks like it will fit nicely inside this box. I have several of the large toughsystem carts that i use for jobs and they make life alot easier, they go anywhere and take crazy abuse, however, they are a bit heavy to get in and out of a vehicle. The big carts are only worth using if you are going to be moving tools quite a bit over rough terrain, stairs, curbs, etc. This cart with some other boxes loaded on it and clipped together will work for smoother transports and within job sites. Cant wait till it’s available…

2 years ago or so i was really looking into these and the T-stacks. Ended up going with the ridgid. I’ve my first ridgid box for about the same time and i’ve been beat the heck out of it with 20lbs of tools inside, left in the sun and it’s still holding up GREAT! i’ve since bought the set of 3 for $99 which is a killer deal. I really like the ridgids over the dewalt because the rigids have the great latches/handles on the sides. I really wouldn’t consider the dewalts now because of that. Had dewalt come out with the cart from the beginning i might be a dewalt tough box owner.

$60 is a little too much for a plastic box with wheels, handle, & a yellow name tag. In fact that goes for any plastic box with the same purpose. I have had 3 of these. All from different manufacturers & they all sucked. Why, because they are made of plastic & can’t handle the daily abuse of tossing hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, etc at it. Also if you load it up with tools the sides & bottom want to warp because of weight or the buckles won’t line up to fasten. Or the rivets that fasten the handle to the box break. If I spend $60 for a tool box it better be made of metal. Just because it has a big box brand name, it ain’t worth $60. How much do laundry baskets cost? Add wheels and a handle & you got yourself a “tough box”.

Wow, what a price point – around $20 cheaper than the current small ToughBox. I wonder what the differences are.
