Edgar sent in a tip about Dewalt’s DCD797 20V Max brushless Tool Connect drill kit being on sale. Thanks, Edgar!
Stuart, over at amazon they have the Dewalt dcd797D2 hammerdrill for 185 USD, do you think it is a deal worth mentioning? I looked up the dcd796D2 in price trackers and they are usually around 220 USD.

You can use it as you would a regular drill, or use the Tool Connect features to program your own speed settings. You can also program the brightness and delay of the built-in LED worklight.

The non-hammer drill version (DCD792D2) is not on sale. It’s currently $220, with the non-Tool Connect DCD791D2 priced at $199. Here’s a link showing both.

This fall into… “I kinda want but don’t need”. A decent deal for a kit that I’ve seen no sales on so far.

Okay so I work on peoples houses for a living. I make cabinets and do general work. I use a lot of DeWalt tools. My drills have 3 speed settings built in. I can not for the life of me figure out why I would pull out my phone and set a custom speed for the drill and then make holes. There has to be more planned for this tech.

I’m the same way Mark. To me it doesn’t make sense if you’re doing all sorts of different tasks without knowing what may be the next.
However, I can see the advantage if you are doing a single repetitive task. You can set the tool up to preform that task optimally and to your preference.

Personally I see this stuff as a gimmick to sell tools. Kind of like 3D TVs. Now I’m sure there are some people out there with very specific application who might find these options useful. But I can’t imagine for the majority of us this is anything but an extra feature to waste some time playing with.
And that’s not to say it won’t evolve into something that we will wonder how we ever lived without. So I cautiously support it. Because they have to start somewhere.

It could be interesting to add a self tapping mode to an impact, or change the multitool since you can’t lock the trigger on anything but full. Then again self rappers aren’t that bad and you could as easily design one with a dial.

Waiting for these tools with wireless in them to get hacked, then /massive/ backlash from the tool community. I really don’t see the need to have a security vulnerability on a power tool that could potentially brick the device. You’d think power tool manufacturers would’ve learned from all the IOT devices that are hacked to be wary of putting wireless into everything. Only thing worse would be these power tools having wifi in them.

I have the DCL070 lights and while the Tool Connect App is delayed and clunky I love being able to turn them on and off remotely. I use them much more than I thought I would around the property. I also really like the ease of renaming items, so I can distinguish the lights from each other.
I also got the DCF888 impact gun to try (I just wanted to have a second one around and it was substantially cheaper than my beloved DCF895). I very much like the idea of being able to use tool connect to change speed/power for certain repetitive tasks where I could just mash the trigger again and again. I can adjust speed downward, but only to 1k RPM. I used the app to make speed 1 essentially as weak as possible and left 2 and 3 as they came.
I hope there are some changes in the future. With the light, all I would like is “instant” control with no wait or lag, but I think the drills and impact guns could be improved a great deal. A few years from now, it would be nice to dial in say “10 ft/lbs” on a later version of the tool.
