New Dewalt ToughBox Jobsite Tool Boxes (Made in USA)

Dewalt ToughBox Jobsite Tool Storage Box

Dewalt recently came out with a new like of ToughBox jobsite tool boxes. They had previously put their name on some heavy duty jobsite boxes which you can still buy, but these new ToughBox tool chests offer some nice features that you might want to pay attention to.

Of course, more features doesn’t come cheap – these new boxes cost more than the other ones, which I would guess might eventually be phased out.

There’s one not-so-secret feature that I think is especially appealing – built-in ToughSystem portable tool box support rails!

Here’s a quick Dewalt ToughBox intro, from last year’s media event:

Being able to store Dewalt ToughSystem tool boxes right inside the jobsite tool box like that seems like a great feature. It doesn’t look like it takes up a lot of space either.

The ToughBox doesn’t come with any ToughSystem tool boxes, and so you don’t have to take advantage of this tool box within a box feature if you don’t want or need to.

Since the ToughSystem tool boxes are supported by the handles, you’re not limited to a single size. It looks to me like you can support ANY Dewalt ToughSystem tool box or accessory on the inner rails.

Following is the official promo video by Dewalt. Warning: it plays at MAX volume.

First Thoughts

I’m not a regular jobsite tool box user, but I love how well these new Dewalt ToughBoxes integrate their ToughSystem tool boxes. The add-on under-lid modules seem like are a nice touch too. I don’t think I’ve seen something like this as an option for other brand’s jobsite tool boxes.

It’s interesting to see Dewalt going after established brands such as Jobox and Knaack. Do you think these new Dewalt boxes are competitive and stand a chance at stealing some market share?

They’re actually a lot cheaper than I thought they would be. Seems like a product you would easily spend thousands on.

Nice. I was wondering when the tool companies would try to take on green Lee and knack

I’ve seen some branded “Ridgid” at Home Depot

      http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-48-in-x-24-in-Universal-Storage-Chest-48R-OS/300748574

From its UPC (783965026994) – it seems the OEM is Knaack

I’ve also seen blue Kobalt job boxes at Lowes – but don’t find the UPC to look up the OEM

I can’t say for the larger Ridgid boxes but the 36″ one I bought for security of sensitive items on a site a few years ago was definitely made by Knaack and labeled / stamped something to the effect of: “Made in USA for Ridgid Tools by Knaack” when you had the lid open.

I think this hit the mark. There seem to be a lot of nice little touch everywhere. I like the Toughbox integration and the recess lock housing. I wonder if it take a special lock or can you provide your own lock? The pricing seem reasonable as well. Obviously the freight will be fairly expensive.

Maybe Home Depot will start carrying them online and let you ship it to the store for free.

Is it just me, or do these look like the world’s biggest grown-up toybox? In all the best meanings of that. Like… These look like the single most fun way of storing your tools, AKA your grown-up toys, like… EVER… I’ve seen the odd tool chest here and there, and asked “why do I need this?” but… I look at these giant ones, and hear from the posts above that other brands make them as well?

Toy Boxes! God I wish I didn’t live in an apartment… one of those would SO go in a garage to put my tools in… DeWALT, Sure, but… On this one I’d LOVE to see the variety of companies that make them!

I’m sorry… I’ve never seen one of these before… I’m just a little geeking out over it. If I seem like an idiot for this, you have my permission to mock/laugh, because I’m not a construction worker, I’m a DIYer/Inventor/Problem Solver type. These super-scaled things are entirely outside what I’ve seen before.

And I have to say… those prices don’t seem very high for what they are… Genuine question to the commenters now… Is this a NORMAL price range for “Jobsite Storage Boxes” from other companies?

We had mostly Knaack boxes – The last inventory I had was that we had almost 50 – plus a few really large toolboxes (aka 20 and 40 foot containers)

Home Depot sells a few including Ridgid and Dewalt

      http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-48-in-Heavy-Duty-Job-Site-Box-DXJB4824/206442793?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cG%7cBase%7cPLA%7cD25T%7cTools&gclid=COHSn9_irNQCFVVXDQodfXYOhg&gclsrc=aw.ds

If you Google Knaack or Jobbox you will see what’s probably the industry leaders.

They should have made it so the front face folds down to facilitate loading and unloading it. The way it is is going to hurt real bad getting a fully loaded large or xl case up over the lip and down to the bottom of that chest. I cringe at unloading that thing full of fully loaded cases.

We’d fit some of our Knack boxes with plywood partitions and lift-out tills to facilitate organization. Not having and open seams in the “tub” of the box is an advantage. We had ones that ended up in a foot of water in the basement of a jobsite after a storm – no water infiltration – and dry contents.

I understand but if you’re loading it up with the ToughBox boxes they’re already water sealed already so is it worth the redundant weather sealing over breaking your back lifting and lowering it down into the case? I’m specifically talking about lifting full ToughBoxs. If you’re talking about loading it up with loose items thats a different story and isn’t that big a deal.

I love this! I agree with a few others, I want one just for my garage at that price. My only problem is the vast majority of my garage is in black & red. As in Craftsman… Obviously from the good old days of Sears/Craftsman. I hope SBD does one for us guys too! That’s a pretty big block of yellow that just wouldn’t match.

    Where are the wheels?

Maybe a caster kit will be made available? Do most brands offer wheel kits? I don’t think I’ve seen many job boxes on casters.

My take is that you do not want them on wheels. When we’d bring ours to a site – after the initial “move-in” – maybe having the Ironworkers or OE’s lift them to a work elevation we’d run cable or chain – box to box and secure them down or to a column. Knaack makes several varieties with wheels – maybe good for your factory floor – but not IMO for a lightly-secured jobsite. We were on a jobsite where one of the constructor’s executives left his MB overnight in what he thought was a secure fenced-in area. The next morning it appeared that someone used a crane and slings to lift it out and steal it. Anything that can easily be moved is subject to theft. I once heard that skid steers are one of the most stolen pieces of equipment – I guess “easy peasy” to drive off with one. Anything you can do to slow the crooks down – and adding wheels is not it.

Perusing acme yesterday waiting to buy the 60″ and I saw they’ve recently added a new 61″ piano top model. Unclear if it retains some tough system integration from the pictures, but it’s quite a bit taller and includes shelving.
