Dewalt recently sent out press information about the new ToughSystem 2.0 jobsite radio and charger (DWST08820), and it turns out that this is actually the first product of a revamped ToughSystem 2.0 modular tool box lineup.
That’s right, Dewalt is soon “relaunching” their ToughSystem tool box lineup.

Here’s what they said about it:
[The new jobsite radio is] the first product in an upcoming relaunch of the original ToughSystem product line, first announced in 2011. More information will be available on the rest of the line in early 2020.
What do we know about the new Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes? Zilch, zero, nada. Well, that’s not exactly true. From the looks of the new Bluetooth jobsite music player, Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 boxes *should* be fully compatible with the existing ToughSystem tool boxes and accessories.
Do you think that the new Dewalt ToughSystem tool boxes will borrow some features from Milwaukee’s Packout tool storage lineup?
What kinds of changes would you hope to see in the “relaunched” Dewalt ToughSystem tool box line?
It’s not unusual for tool brands to refresh their modular tool box system. Festool refreshed their Systainers (and again recently), Bosch has done it with L-Boxxes, and Sortainer recently refreshed their T-Boxxes (to my dissatisfaction).

It’ll be interesting to see what changes Dewalt has in store for their ToughSystem tool box system.

Compatibility with smaller toolboxes and organizers. 1.0 has no compatibility with other smaller dewalt organizers. I want some organizers that perfect fit into the box with tray or without tray, integration of organizer bins in larger boxes, and a set up to make a custom box capable of EDC. Also a toughsystem tip out organizer like tsak box.
Number 1 want: Use the underside of the lids with magnets for small wrenches, drill bits, and parts. Maybe put a tip out parts organizer bins in the lid. Just use that real estate for organization or use effcientcy.
Nick
Would like a vac but I’ve mostly switched over to tstak.
A folding cart like a heavier duty tstak one that *folds* would be awesome for rough work.
alex
Tstak compatibility would be nice 🙂
Tom
Come up with a flat tray adaptor to accept smaller components. If its thin enough it could inspire creativity and provide flexibility.

They’re using the lower-tier it budget models’ latches, if that pic of the radio is what will be standard. I prefer everything about the higher priced box models, except those latches. The wheeled box, whatever was different in the medium I don’t recall, and the small dropped a lid handle and the interior drop down, BUT the latches on them were far superior to the 1.0. The newer ones are meatier, and secured with a through rod if I recall correctly. My originals have a lot of filler “styled” out for whatever reason, and are held by two little nipples of the same blowmold material as the rest of the box. I’ve broken 2 in roughly a dozen boxes and 5 years, and as soon as I saw my coworker bought the wheeled box set, I’ve envied the coupling latches.
Herb Britt
1. Low profile organizers
2. Sorting cups that contain cleats to insert dividers
3. Totes and tool bags that can clip to the boxes (The UK already has these for the TStaks over there)
4. Dolly plate
Basically, all things that the Pack Out is whipping them on. And I’m a Toughsystem guy.
Herb Britt
Also,
5. Lower priced drawer boxes
6. Factory cut foam inserts
7. Vacuum molded inserts that allow for the new toughcase + boxes to be inserted into (ala the new TStak carrier.
Altan
6 and 7 are interesting.

-It would be nice to have a ToughSys-Tstak adapter plate.
-Powerstation 2.0 that you could stack on top of would be good. At least a roll cage replacement modification.
-A Tstak version of the powerstation that you can mount on top of. The batteries could mount on the sides or back/front.
-Fully removable tops would be a bit of a stretch.
-7-1/4 Miter saw mount, compatible with the wall/van rack system, that you could also mount on top of other boxes would be great. Could even use the quick rail mount.
-Mechanic tool chest style drawer using sheet metal drawers instead of plastic? That would address the drooping issue all the drawers styles face.
Overall as long as it’s compatible with ver1.0 and all the other rack systems, I’ll be happy. The rolling box is in dire need of revamp.
Altan
Power station and mitre saw ideas are interesting. I would go for them.

Having recently spent hundreds of dollars getting into tough system, it better damn we’ll be sure 100% compatible. Now I don’t know if I should keep buying the current models or wait for the new ones.
Big Richard
Wait until the new ones come out. If you decide you don’t need/want the new 2.0 system, its release should at least knock down the price of existing 1.0 pieces. It’s a win-win.
Eric
I have a couple dozen tough system pieces including racks at the house. I assume and hope they will maintain compatibility.
My hopes:
1. Appropriately priced dolly.
2. T-Stak adaptor (I currently own none but I would like to).
3. “120v max” dust collector.

Include a well engineered way of attaching longer items such as a 2 foot level to the side. More compartments with roll out drawers. Keep in mind a nice spot to attach a label to the front for fast identification.
Altan
Oh this post is for me just.

similar to other comments – how about base bare foam? cheap cut foam block that fits toughsystem ________. boxes.
I can cut it myself. sure precut would be nice – etc. but I’d be in for a cheap block and some diy
to another point above. If not that. individual blocks of foam that go together in a TS box. IE – heres a socket rail for SAE and one for metric, then a foam piece for ratchets. Now another foam block for a dewalt drill, and impact driver. . . . . etc so a person could mix and match one.
Finally I like most of it- the newer drawer thing was nice- more of the drawer style boxes. I like the idea of sorting containers – I think that’s on the way already.
And what I think would be hugely beneficial in a shop. Let a TS box slide out on the rails so it can be opened – while still sitting on the rail. In other words – rail slides. it’s not useful for every box obviously but it would be useful for some.

Check out kaizer inserts for foam.
Patrick
I agree with a lot of the above, especially Britt Herb’s points. I have sort of given up hope on a reasonably priced cart. I carry two large boxes and a tote on a $30 folding cart from the local farm store just fine.
Patrick
Being able to adjust the small parts organizer into different shapes or buy different sizes would be fantastic. Even just combining two pairs of the small ones into two longer ones would go a long way into making it more functional.
Brad
Love the picture.
The radio which for the most part should sit in the corner and be out of the way is beat to heck.
Batteries supposedly attached to tools and being used around the worksite …. looking good!!
There does appear to be four “slots” on top which leads me to believe they might have some form of “click/release mechanism” like the Packouts.
Also would not doubt a little softer plastic less prone to cracking.
Philip Proctor
In no particular order:
1. Low profile parts organizer.
2. Bags/totes that are compatible.
3. Dollie
4. Release the 3 drawer unit already!
5. A two drawer unit with one drawer from the three drawer unit and a real deep drawer for bulkier tools like the 20v router and planer.
Corey Moore
I’m curious what you mean regarding a dolly? Some sort of upgrade to the existing one?
Philip Proctor
Just a platform with clips and four wheels. No handle.
Shawn Cincinnati
Phillip, the drawer system should be scraped all together. I have 4 original drawer units that no longer open and I quickly bought 2 of the new TS drawer systems and they are worse. They won’t stay closed. You carry them down steps and the drawers fly open. I hate the design and wasted money.
The ONLY TS box I hate btw. The 3 drawer will fail as well. Needs to be a metal construction to hold up, not plastic.
I think everyone agrees that we need low profile or smaller bin insets for bits and small things. Clear top TS boxes are great but the bins are way to big and to tall for small stuff.
I guess they can’t make everyone happy.
Great products and a great American company that support

I want Toughsystem version of this Festool foam

Rockler sells Kaisen foam that you can cut to fit boxes. They stock several thicknesses and you can make your own custom inserts. I have them in all my TS boxes so my tools don’t bang around
Not going to look quite as nice as a factory molded but works great.
Support Dewalt a great American company
Best of luck.

With be Bluetooth 5.0 compatible?

If you don’t need a radio that attaches to your tool storage system, then there’s absolutely no need to be brand loyal. If DeWalt currently sucks at storage totes, buy the Packout from Milwaukee.
I have Makita tools and the only Makita box I have is the one my track saw came with. Got a great deal on some Packout gear and didn’t even think about it.
DeWalt better do a better job than Milwaukee on their 2.0 line, they’ve had long enough to benchmark the competition.
Austin
The latches on 3 out of 4 of my “tough” boxes have broken in less than 6 mo. the yellow lockers on 2 boxes, 1 metal latch on the other. I also own 4 ridged boxes that have been through 4yrs of service w/ functional latches. Most trades people I talk to are interested in having a box system, but DeWalt has made it difficult to recommend their offering. I hope 2.0 has addressed the way the latches are fastened to the box.
Stan
I would really like to see retract handles shorter . All of the manufactures seem to make the stackable boxes for vans . They don’t work in pickups , can’t close the retract covers many of us use for our work .
Don
Looks like it can be order now from HomeDepot, anyone tried? I am in Canada or I would.
Crowley
I had one of these boxes, within one week the latches came off, the handl pulled out. Not to mention if you have a cover on your truck. The handle won’t fit under it.

Very disappointed. I ordered this Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 radio online from Home Depot and after multiple delivery delays from UPS it came broken/defective. Only 2 of the 4 speakers worked. I already own 2 of the 1.0 models and I’m very satified with them so I thought this new model would have the same toughness and quality. Guess I was wrong. What a let down. I dont feel like going through this process again so i returned the defective product for a refund. Good luck to anyone else that purchases this product.
