A couple of days ago, I saw that Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 shallow tool trays were now in stock at retailers.
Dear Dewalt, would be able to send over review samples? I asked my PR contact. These trays looked interesting, and I have a couple of ways I want to test them out for ToolGuyd content.

But while they look interesting, I wasn’t prepared to buy any – they’re not that interesting with respect to suiting my workshop needs and preferences.
At that time, they were $10 each, or a 4-pack for $40.
Now, I see that you can buy 2 for $15, or 3 for $20.
3 for $20? That comes out to be ~$6.67 each.
Hm… at less than $7 each, they’re a whole lot more interesting! Maybe I could put this in a tool box drawer as a removable tray/organizer. Do you see the slots inside the tray? That’s for creating your own custom inserts and dividers.
$20 for 3? And they stack together? And as a bonus they can be used inside ToughSystem tool boxes for creating custom hand tool or parts trays?

AND you get free shipping with no minimum, making this trio of organizers $20 shipped?
I just ordered a pack. Yes, it’s silly since review samples are on the way, but I can’t pass this up! I’ll also play around with the ones Dewalt’s sending over – although it might be some time since inventory levels.
There is also a deep tray, but those are all sold out on Home Depot’s website. I ordered just one pack of shallow trays just now. If they don’t sell out quickly, I’ll likely buy a second pack – I would have done that now, but I don’t want to hog them all for myself.
If the front recess (handle?) is deep enough, these might even be great for a DIY tray container box, where they can be treated as removable drawers.
What would you use these for?
Do you agree that $20 for 3 is a great price?
As much as they look very well designed for ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes, I feel a bit guilty knowing that there is maybe a 90% change I use these for something else.

Will these work in the original tough system cases Stu?
Stuart
I don’t know. That’s part of why I requested test samples, to answer questions like that, although I only have a couple of ToughSystem 1.0 boxes left.
If I had to guess, I would say no.
ChrisK1970
Thank you sir 🙂
Aaron
I’m not sure if my question is more nuanced or less nuanced: How much dremeling will it take to fit them in the toughsystem 1.0 boxes?
Stuart
No idea. Really, I don’t know. It could be a little, or it could so much it compromises functionality. Or, they could be perfectly compatible.
I’ll know soon enough.
They specifically say:
Compatible with TOUGHYSTEM 2.0 modules which might exclude original boxes by default.
Corey Moore
I think the answer is none, as the 2.0 are larger inside.
Brad
I just bought a 3 pack. I’m more interested in the deeper tray but they are sold out.
I’m envisioning adding kaizen inserts in my large boxes for big tools.
It looks like I’ll be able to add a shallow tray on top of that per box. Hopefully I can get a deeper tray soon as that looks perfect for battery storage.

Do you know if these trays fit in the the original Tough System (I guess now Tough System 1.0) boxes?
Stuart
Chris asked the same question, and unfortunately I don’t have any answer to this yet.
I’d guess no.
The shape is a little different than the inserts in last year’s ToughSystem tool set https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-toughsystem-mechanics-tool-set-dropped-in-price-111019/ but that might not mean anything.
Benjamen
Several Instagram reviewers I trust have said they are incompatible.
Jared
That’s a pretty big bummer. Thanks for sharing though.
I still might shop for a bunch of these but that means a bigger investment. if I need some 2.0 boxes now too.
Jared
I didn’t know these existed!
I am going to shop for a deal here in Canada. I’m thinking these could be an awesome to use as drawer inserts in my tool cabinet – which I can then grab when I want a specific set of tools and transport to where I’m working.

Product page on Home Depot Canada (in case anyone else is looking): https://www.homedepot.ca/product/dewalt-tough-system-2-0-shallow-tool-tray/1001595582
Not available for sale yet – but I assume this means we are getting them soon.
Didn’t see them listed by any of the other usual tool seller suspects yet.
Seth
Are these the same size as the ones for $7 on amazon that you posted on about a week ago?
With the clear lid and the dividers?
Stuart
No. These are going to be maybe 4x larger, and without a lid or dividers.
Yoni
I know it sounds bonkers, but these trays are the number one reason I was/am interested in the Tough System 2 line. Hey, Milwaukee, you guys want to copy these too so I can slip a stack into my packout?
For now, I am using a set of interlocking bead organisers which is just OK.

Home Depot has the shallow tool tray back in stock. Same great price for 3x. Free shipping to home or your local store.
Stuart
Thank you for the update!
Tom
Not seeing it. All possible combinations of trays are showing as unavailable. Do you have a link?
Jon
I have seen it go in and out of stock the last couple days. I managed to order one today when it was in stock
Tom
Gotcha. I’ve been checking it regularly also, but no luck. I’m tracking it now so I should get an email when it’s back in stock.
I’ll sound the alarm here if/when that happens.
Thanks for the reply.
Tom
Home Depot has the Shallow trays back in stock online at least. Just ordered the 3 pack.
Still no movement on the Deep trays, though.
JJ
I don’t understand why Dewalt haven’t introduced versions that clips onto the tool boxes using the external fitting clips. I use Tstak cases and there is a caddy unit that does just this but it is a waste of space, unless you have all your drill bits, etc in the correct size tough case. The way it is moulded makes it un-useable for anything else.
