D’oh! Home Depot Homer Bucket Mugs Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Home Depot Homer Mug

Home Depot has recalled nearly 4,000 Homer all-purpose bucket mugs due to a fire hazard. When microwaved, the silver-colored bucket handle accent decoration can spark. No injuries or damage have been reported.

If you own one of these mugs, the US CPSC recommends that you stop using it and return it to Home Depot store for a full refund.

OR just keep it on your workbench and use it as a pen/pencil/random tool catch-all. Or just be sure not to stick it in the microwave.

I thought everyone knew, you are not to put anything metallic, chromed, or otherwise, in a microwave. It seems odd to me, to require a recall, for something that common knowledge should tell us could happen.
What next, a recall for a knife, because it might cut something?

Yes its very obvious the manufacturer should have known about using metallic materials for anything that might go into a microwave. As for the homeowner, they should know but as for me, I have seen lots of stuff made microwave safe so I would have assumed the mug would’ve been safe to nuke. They even have microwaves with metal shelves nowadays.

As for the manufacturer, a simple product test would have avoided this whole issue in the first place.

Hey, look, a recall because people are idiots!

Someone should make a coffee mug with a metal rim that explodes if microwaved… might assist natural selection.

    I swear I’m really a nice guy!

OK, maybe I got a little ahead of myself… The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall statement made no mention of the mug being sold as “Microwave Safe”, however, the recall notice on the HD site does in fact mention this…

Shortly after placing that cup in the microwave, the person might sue Home Depot and win likely, despite common sense dictating you really nything metallic, chromed, or otherwise, in a microwave.

Naturally of course, people probably have done this and probably are trying to sue Home Depot as we speak. Yup, this is the America we live in today sadly…

The mug likely wasn’t marked as not microwave safe, or was unmarked. Thus, recall! Otherwise someone will sue for sure.

Let me guess these were made in China. Any decent manufacturer should have known that people put coffee cups in the microwave.

What’s it matter if it was made in China, Germany, Canada, Spain etc? I don’t see how country of origin makes a lick of difference if has a metal part in it, and isn’t safe for a microwave. I’ve seen plenty of US made products that have flaws to them.

I think you’re reaching for straws with this one.

To my recollection, no USA company has ever advertised to place metal in microwave, yet Home Depot in this case did and surprise surprise, this is made in the PRC.

The gentlemen you prior didn’t mention anything about USA being of better quality however.

Your more than welcome to state otherwise, but I don’t believe he is “reaching for straws” as you yourself have stated.

“Let me guess these were made in China” what does that have to do with anything?

They way I am reading his post, is because he is assuming (probably is but that isn’t the point) it is made in China, it can’t come from a decent manufacturer. He is basically making a claim that China has no good manufacturers.

The Home Depot Homer Bucket Mug may not meet the claim of being
microwave safe. The simulated bucket handle may spark and result in
a high surface temperature on the mug.

So apparently it was described as microwave safe, but in some cases it’s not.
