We’ve talked about Rockler’s Bench Cookies before, and even the new rebranded set by Bench Dog. These nifty hockey puck-sized non-marring workpiece elevators are great for many types of jobs – painting, routing, sanding, drilling, and the list goes on.

We love ’em, and have been seeing many positive user reviews about them on the web. You can try to make your own, but $12 for four Bench Cookies won’t break the bank.

I fail to see how these are actually innovative much less worth $12. Four blocks of wood with self-adhesive drawer lining bought from Walmart would serve the same purpose for about $2.

Of if you must have round “puck” shaped items, just buy hockey pucks. You can often find generic off branded pucks for around $1 each. Apply the same self-adhesive drawer lining and they will work exactly the same but probably be a tad heavier than the store bought versions which works to your advantage.

The lining on these is not ordinary PSA drawer lining, it’s about as tough and grippy as a heavy-duty mouse pad.

And no, they’re not that innovative, but they are darned useful.

The way I see it, four cheap pucks = $5. Rattle can of spray adhesive or even bottle of polymer glue: $3.50. Unless you can find textured neoprene rubber for less than $4 or so, which may be difficult to do, it is cheaper just to buy the Bench Cookies.

Yes, DIY can be cheaper, but to achieve the same performance, most people will end up spending more than $12 on materials and supplies.

Most of the appeal of these Bench Cookies come not from their utility as workpiece risers, but their exceptional ability to hold workpieces steady when applying lateral forces.
