Field Notes Pocket Notebook Charry Wood Cover

Field Notes, which makes simple but good quality notepads, came out with new memo pads that have cherry wood covers. They come in a pack of 3 for about $10.

The notepads are 3-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ in size, making them perfect for carrying in a front or rear pants pocket. The 48 pages feature graph paper-style ruling.

I ordered a pack of these from Amazon and they arrived yesterday. The covers are thin, as expected, but they do feel plenty durable. I would show you a writing sample, but I have horrible penmanship.

Cherry wood covers? Graph paper with fine lines and a 3/16″ grid? Made in the USA? Pocket sized? Gloriously perfect!

Not a fan of graph paper? Field Notes makes these mini memo books in a range of styles.

Field Notes have been around for a while. These are great little notebooks that when in hand prove to be really well made. I have bought them for myself and friends before. I love that a product as ubiquitous as a notebook can be made in the USA and thrive. I haven’t seen the wood covered version but will be on my list Christmas gifts this year.

    Good find!
My friend Aaron Draplin has been developing variations of these for years. He’s right here in Portlandia. Google DDC/Draplin Design. I’ve always loved their backstory and the very idea of making something that’s useful, well crafted and cool right here in the good ol’ U. S. of A.
And yes I do prefer the “traditional” card stock covered versions.

I can see no advantage of 3/16″ grids, 1/4″ or 1/5″ are by far more useful. That size grid makes a good notebook almost useless, far from glorious or perfect. Blank pages would be better.

Looking at Amazon reveals 3-1/2 x 5-1/2″ Field Books available in numerous cover designs and page styles including graph (grid), dot grid, ruled, and plain. I personally think these are super-duper. Also available is set of 3 mixed – graph, ruled and plain. The size conveniently matches up reasonably well with many pocket planners/ calendars.
For sketching purposes in a “pocket” notebook 3/16″ (0.1875″) grid should be just fine. If it even is that exact spacing, it’s within 0.0125″ of 1/5″ (0.200″).
I’m just sayin… most gridded (engineering) pads in the United States are based on “n” squares per inch: 4×4 5×5, 8×8, 10×10 (my favorite) and I bet the difference, 0.0125 Clams, that Stu might not have measured it all that accurately (joke).
If one needs to be closer on a drawing or layout sketch than 0.019″ one might be better be better off with a drawing board and drafting tools or CAD program.

Field Notes is nothing but an exercise in branding and graphic design. I find them inferior to Moleskins. Moleskins hold up better, have stitched bindings, pockets on the interior of the covers, come in a greater variety of page print options and often have a subset of pages perfed for easy removal. Leuchtturm1917 also makes an excellent notebook.
