not a lot of bosch on sale… oh well
Any thoughts on that ryobi bench grinder?
John S
Sorry – also, are you planning on putting up BF ads for places like rockler and woodcraft, etc?
Stuart
I will try, but what I plan to do as BF approaches is hand-pick some of the better deals I come across, otherwise it could get even more out of hand.
Plus, with Rockler and Woodcraft, their deals are typically not made public until just before Black Friday, at which time there’s less value.
I can take a couple of hours this week to go through the major retailers’ ad scans to list and link to the tool deals, but as BF approaches I just won’t have the time. And with online-focused stores like Rockler and Woodcraft, their newsletter subscribers will see all the same deals in their inboxes, which means my efforts won’t really be that helpful.
John S
Good points – thanks Stuart!
Stuart
That grinder is a “Special Buy” but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. One of the more notable differences is that it lacks the built-in work lamp of the regular model, but I see that as a plus. I don’t recall if there were any other major differences.
John S
That is the one difference I noticed, but I agree – not sure it is a bad thing… I am indecisive about getting a cheap bench grinder versus spending more and getting a nice one. I bet I already know your answer 🙂
Stuart
It’s a tough choice, but if you try it and don’t like it, return it and step up. Or put in 100 hours with the Ryobi and then step up to a higher model.
I don’t normally take interest in special buys, but the grinder catches my attention every year.
bob
I picked one up last year and have no complaints about it at all, glad I did.
crewchief888
i have a ryobi bench grinder from HD..
not overly impressed with it,
but it a $30 grinder it’s fine for sharpening an ocassional drill bit, or knocking off a burr…
George
Thanks for the update!
I got excited when I see Milwaukee M12 combo at $99, then I realized that it is not a drill/driver and impact driver combo. Kind of sad 🙁
Any thought about Makita 12v combo?
Stuart
With the M12, there’s an impact driver kit for $99, and the screwdriver plus impact kit is also $99. I first wrote it up as a drill and impact kit – it seems odd to bundle a screwdriver and impact together, but I guess the tool buyers at Home Depot know what they’re doing.
The Makita combo looks good. $99 for a pro-grade drill and impact with 2-batteries and hard case is a good deal. The tools are a little long in the tooth, so they won’t provide best-in-class performance or runtime, but they work pretty well.
Personally, I would prefer the Milwaukee, as their M12 line offers many more tool options for expansion consideration. But as standalone tools, those Milwaukee and Makita offerings should be fairly competitive with each other. Can’t go wrong with either, assuming you’re happy with the tools in each kit.
Don’t forget that Amazon will be offering a $25 off $100 promo soon. Details in Amazon BF Deals post. If I were starting off with zero 12V-class tools, I would strongly consider the Makita 12V drill, impact, circular saw, and flashlight combo link, which should drop to $175 after discount.
There’s also Bosch to consider. Their new 12V drill, driver, radio, double L-Boxx bundle kit (link) is VERY appealing to me, and if it’s eligible for the upcoming $25 off $100 discount, it will be an unbeatable value.
George
The makita 4 in 1 combo is very tempting, I almost made up my mind for this one before I saw the Makita link you posted here. They are all great tools, it is hard to make dicision 🙂
George
Sorry, did not make it right, My first time to add link. Another try Bosch
Thanks
Stuart
I am almost certain there will be another Bosch 12V L-Boxx bundle special this year, but it could be the drill/driver, drill + impact combo, or drill + impact + radio combo.
A lot of brands are also heavily pushing their 18V platforms through 2-tool combo plus free bonus tool combo kits. It will be interesting to see which promos do better – lower priced compact tools, or pricier great bargain 18V bundles.
Charlie
I recently moved into an apartment where several of the walls are masonry, so for putting up heavy mirrors etc I think I’ll need a decent driver. (Never owned one before, I only own a cordless Panny screwdriver and a 30-yr-old AC-powered drill.) Would a 12v driver like the Bosch be sufficient for my masonry walls or should I spring for 18v? I just need something for occasional home use, but those occasions will have to go into masonry.
Any of these deals better/best for me? Thanks!
Stuart
You’re going to need a hammer drill. While you *can* use rotary masonry bits, the few I’ve come across were a pain to use.
A hammer drill with hammer masonry bits would be a good combo, and you would be able to use it for other drilling and driving tasks as well.
Something like the Bosch 12V PS130 might suffice, but an 18V model will be quicker and more comfortable to use.
There might be some deals around the holidays, but probably no Black Friday-centered deals.
When I was in an apartment with masonry walls, I bought a Bosch corded hammer drill. I still use that drill every now and then when I need to drill larger holes that my cordless can’t easily handle.
There are consumer cordless models available as well, mainly in the $75 to $150 price range. Corded hammer drills range from $75 to $150 for basic pro-grade models. The downside to corded hammer drills is that there’s no adjustable clutch, and so they’re not ideal for screwdriving tasks.
Charlie
Thanks a lot! I probably need to get a basic driver too for normal walls and driving (I want to get rid of this old 60s-era B&D U-100 corded drill) so if I follow your advice I’ll see what Bosch is offering on Black Friday.
Charlie
Oops, I missed the part about the hammer drill being usable for normal driving tasks. Well, that looks like a decent choice. The 18v Bosch options run around $180, so I’ll think about whether I want to spend the extra $60. As an investment it might be worth it…?
Stuart
I bought my Bosch corded hammer drill 5 or 6 years ago. If I had bought a cordless model, the batteries would probably need replacing by now.
If I had a $150-$200 budget and needed casual around-the-home hammer drilling capabilities, I would probably opt for an inexpensive corded hammer drill and a 12V drill kit. The 12V drill would handle all casual drilling and driving tasks, and the corded hammer drill would last for many years. The corded drill would come out to handle larger holes as well.
I would also recommend looking at Milwaukee’s M12 line. Their hammer drill kit is priced at $149.
In thinking about 12V vs. 18V vs. corded, ask yourself whether you want an auxiliary handle and adjustable depth guide. That might help narrow things down.
Charlie
Lots of food for thought here. Looking on amazon for $80 Bosch and Porter have 7-amp corded 1/2″ hammer drills (Porter’s is 2-speed), and Dewalt and Skil have one for around $65. Any specific recommendations?
FYI they’re doing work on the outside of my building now, and here’s what the masonry looks like on the ground floor: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1862475/IMG_0861.jpg
Steve
Hey, does that M12 screwdriver / impact driver combo come with the red lithium batteries? or the older model?
Id like a 12v set for assembling and around the house stuff. Also something for working on my car, lighter duty and interior stuff. I have a 1/2″ impact wrench for the large bolts. Is the screwdriver enough or would you suggest going for the drill/driver?
Stuart
I would think that it comes with RedLithium batteries, but it’s hard to say since the “special buy” online listing hasn’t gone up yet.
I personally favor drill and impact driver combinations. Drill/drivers have adjustable clutches that are useful for driving applications, but 3/8″ chucks that can hold common drill bits.
rob
I picked up the $17 platform a couple of years back from Lowes on Black Friday. It’s an item you won’t really think you need until you buy it then it becomes so handy. Much easier to work from a platform when painting but beyond that it’s great for cleaning the windows and comes in handy as a quick workbench when needed. For the price I would highly recommend one.
Dennis
I agree those things are great. Rockler puts them on sale from time to time as well. A great tool to have. Get a couple.
george
why oh why is it that the one tool I need is never on sale or the sale price is anemic.
Stuart
Which tool?
Thowe
How region-specific is this Black Friday ad? Those Husky tool chest combos listed at 299 and 498 are not in my entire region/district and no one knows about them either.
Any further info?
Stuart
I’m looking at the fine print, and it doesn’t say. The flyer shouldn’t be region-specific.
The product numbers are 1000022128 for the $299 combo, and 1000017605 for the $498 combo.
These, and a lot of the other deals that were mentioned but not linked-to, might be in-store only deals. Or they might be available online and in-store. More detailed information on deals like these won’t be available until Thanksgiving/Black Friday is right on top of us. There’s nothing we can do but wait.
djw2004
Those numbers are actually the SKUs and not product numbers. If they’re in the ad, then they might be shipped into your region for Black Friday. Your best bet is to call into your local HD and ask a manager
Dennis
I got excited when I saw all that Milwaukee stuff, but then my excitement dwindled when I saw it wasn’t “Fuel”. Looking at the rest of the items, nothing jumps out at me as all that super-dooper of a deal. Most of the deals are equivalent to ones you see throughout the rear on the same products, you just gotta keep an eye out. Some of the deals fall into the category of what is my time worth. I can go and line up before 5AM on Black Friday morning to get a Leatherman Wingman for 20 bucks plus tax, or I can do a couple clicks on Amazon.com and have it for $24, and I don’t have to get up early and leave my warm bed…. Decisions decisions.
Stuart
My local Home Depot didn’t have any Wingmans out the last time I checked, but the display might be put out ahead of BF. Amazon might price match or Home Depot might put the deal online with an in-store pickup option. But you’re right, $20 vs. $24 isn’t a big enough difference to get me to wake up early either.
I think the deals look pretty good this year. Not earth-shattering wallet-exploding good, but decent. There are a couple of things I have my eyes on at Home Depot, Sears, and Amazon. Lowes might have some good stuff as well, but nothing that I’m in the market for.
djw2004
My store has the Leatherman out already in their gift center
Noah
Finally gonna get that kit of hole saws I always look at but pass.
Javier
Man, lots of great deals. I think most deals are good for 11/28-12/4. I wonder which ones are black Friday only exclusive? Some of the deals are too good to pass up like husky 3 piece tool bag set and the Bosch daredevil spade bits.
Brian
Stuart,
Any thoughts on the Ridgid 10″ Portable Table Saw with Stand for $399? Be eyeing it for a while and think it would be good for a causal DIY person.
Stuart
It looks to be a good buy and that model has a good reputation.
If you intend to keep the saw unfolded and stationary, the Ridgid R4512 or Craftsman 21833 might be better options. Right now the Craftsman is only $75 more than 4510 BF price.
Matthew Sumner
How sturdy are the Husky toolboxes? That looks like a lot of storage space for the price. I’m sure they are not the same quality as the truck brand boxes, but looks like they would be great for a homeowner box.
Stuart
They should be reasonably sturdily built and are probably at least comparable to Craftsman tool boxes of comparable pricing. To be sure, you might want to check to see if your local Home Depot has a floor model you can inspect. While Home Depot has a good return policy, returning >100 lb tool storage products can be a hassle (in general).
barry
I have used Husky toolbags for the last few years and I must say they about one of the best I have ever used! I have the 18″ with the center tool insert, And I pack about 45 lb of tools in it for about two or 3 years now, and not a tear in it! They are rugged as rugged gets, And I have plans on buying more….They may seem a little expensive, but the quality is well worth the price. They runs circles around craftsman toolbags.
Jake
Right now, Home Depot has a special on the 20v Dewalt Hammer/Impact drill, with your choice of a free Circular Saw, Sawzall, or a another battery for $299. I think this is the best deal of the year. Thoughts?
Stuart
I haven’t heard about the Dewalt deal, and also can’t find details online, but they’re doing something similar with Milwaukee Makita Li-ion combos: https://toolguyd.com/milwaukee-makita-power-tool-combo-kit-free-bonus-tools-112013/
In-store I saw a promo for a free recip saw or battery with select Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, and Ridgid combo kits, but no mention of a circular saw bonus offer as with the online promo.
Jake

What do you think?
Stuart
That’s a little different than what my local HD was advertising, but maybe additional posters will come later. (Cell photo added to bottom of post.)
Jeff Williams
I just saw that HD sent BFADS.net another legal demand to remove the ad this year. Ever had that happen to you Stuart for a Black Friday ad?
http://bfads.net/Home-Depot-Black-Friday-Ad-Removed-2013
Stuart
Not that I know of.
Kevin
In the market for an 18v system. What about the 18v makita kit in here going for $199? Or is it worth it to pony up the $100 and move up to a $299 kit with free tool? If so, which brand?
Mostly a DIYer but I love having the hard carrying cases for storage and don’t want to go with a 12v.
Also, I have a craftsman c3 19.2v drill – is that family of tools worth adding on to instead? I know craftsman used to be a solid tool but Sears is in so much trouble that I worry their tools have gone down in quality.
Lastly, The ridgid is literally $100 cheaper than the other name brands. Do you get what you pay for in that situation?
Thanks! Love the site.
Kevin
all those are fine toolkits but ask yourself what you’re going to primarily use the tools for then buy accordingly. As far a buying a set for a free tool, not really worth it inmo, cordless tools are cheap, it’s the batts that cost the money. Check ebay there’s a gluttony of bare tools that people put up for sale after buying a tool kit.
Stuart
That Makita kit is one of their compact kits. If you want to expand to a heavier duty tool, say a makita 18V circular saw, you’ll have to buy an LXT battery and charger. Or start off with the $299 kit.
If you want a drill/driver, impact, and circular saw, any of the Milwaukee, Makita, or Ridgid $299 kits should serve you equally as well.
All of these brands, as well as Bosch and Dewalt, are designed above the needs of DIYers.
Craftsman C3 19.2V is a good platform for DIYers to buy into, and they regularly expand the line with new products. Last year they added new budget and premium Li-ion focus, this year they came out with a brushless drill, 3-speed impact, cordless ratchet, and a hammer drill.
Even if Sears is in financial trouble, I have no doubts that the Craftsman brand will survive whatever might happen.
Ridgid’s 18V line is smaller than Makita’s and Milwaukee’s, but you do get reasonable quality. Hitachi is another mid-to-high-level brand that could serve you well.
I think that, for your needs, it comes down to the question of whether you plan on adding other tools to your kit in the future. If you want something like a band saw, then that limits your options to Makita and Milwaukee, from the brands mentioned. If you might add a circular saw, reciprocating saw, or jigsaw, than any of the brand offer similar expandability selection.
Kevin
Thanks for the advice. Less than being able to expand to a bunch if tools, I mainly want something of good quality. I’m so sick of buying garbage- I’d like it to last for years to come. So I guess the question really is- what is the best bet for quality, performance and longevity?
That is why I find myself attracted to Milwaukee and makita, and less so to Ryobi, craftsman, ridgid etc. something about having sears as my tool dealer really eats into my confidence with craftsman. They sell them a kmart for god sakes.
I think I would tend towards corded models for something like a band saw.
Stuart
You might also want to consider the Bosch 18V drill/driver/L-Boxx kit (via Amazon). Their $25 off $100 instant discount goes live in one week.
Between Bosch, Milwaukee, Makita, Ridgid, and Dewalt, you can’t go wrong with any of their ~$199 drill/driver kits, in terms of durability, quality, and performance.
I mentioned the Bosch kit because you mentioned you’re a fan of hard tool cases, and that combo sets you up with 2 L-boxxes which have an approximate retail value of $100.
Patrick Scla
No Chainsaws????????
Patrick Scla
Guess I’m going to sears.
crewchief888
my local HD has both ridgid & milwaukee 18v 1/4″ hex impact drivers (bare tool) on clearance.
milwaukee was $79
ridgid was $50
Triston
I am looking into getting a 10inch sliding compound miter saw. Right now Home Depot Online has the Dewalt brand for $450. However, I see that Home Depot’s black Friday add shows the 12 inch for $399. But I’ve read the 12 inch isn’t as precise.
Any advice what to do?
Stuart
10″ sliding miter saws don’t offer too many size or weight advantages compared to 12″ ones. To me, the main advantage is being able to draw from a larger assortment of 10″ saw blades. Going to 12″ does provide for a slightly higher maximum cutting capacity.
With something like a sliding miter saw, I would stay away from the “special buys,” which might have been cheapened in some ways for the holidays.
In this case, my default recommendation is to try the model you’re interested in. Try it out, and if it’s not accurate enough or you don’t like it for whatever reason, return it.
If you want to stay with Dewalt, and the choice is between their ~$450 DW717 or ~$530 DWS780 (via Amazon), I would go with the DWS780.
I’m not sure which 12″ is on sale for $399. Maybe their previous DW718 model? The DW718 has a reasonably good reputation, and for $399 it would be a good buy. But again, if you’re in the fence, try it out and see if it suits your needs. If not, you could in most cases return it without penalty.
Triston
Thank you for the help Stuart. I really appreciate it. The reason I was leaning towards the 10 inch is because in all the research I had done the comments on the 12 inch was that it didn’t cut as precisely. Thanks again
Diane
Hi Stuart,
After years of owning a crap cordless drill I want to surprise my husband with a new cordless drill. He is a DIY. For his next project he will use the drill for a bathroom renovation. He isn’t using it everyday like someone in the trades but I want to have a quality item. Do you have a recommendation list on this website? I have been reading through your reviews and realize there is a lot to know. Thanks!
Stuart
Diane,
At the $100 and under level, this Bosch kit is one of the better 18V drill/driver bargains I’ve seen. In the $100-150 price range, there are a lot more 12V and 18V options.
The $99 Dewalt option, discussed here is another reasonably good deal. This is not their regular model, but a slightly scaled-back version designed around the $100 price point.
Tyler
Ive been eyeing the Ryobi driver/impact set. Im wanting the cordless impact to keep in the truck for lug nut removal and other small vehicular maintenance. From everything im reading 125 ft pounds just isnt enough to break loose lug nuts although lug nuts are factory torqued to 60~95 ft lbs. What are your thoughts?
Stuart
If you want to remove a lug nut immediately after it is torqued to spec, then 125 ft-lbs might be enough. But more power is typically needed to remove lugs that haven’t been turned in a while.
The only way to know for sure is to try it, but there is a high likelihood that this particular impact will not be up for lug nut removal.
Triston
ok. Thanks for your help
alexis lawrence
i want to buy my hubby a tool box for the back of his truck is the one that on sale a good price
Stuart
Compared to some of the other low profile truck boxes on the market, the Husky does look to be a good price.
alexis lawrence
thanks but will it fit he have a Mazda BT-50 2013 and i don’t see where i can get it online or do i have to go in store
Stuart
Right now I can’t find an online link either, so you would have to go in-store to order or purchase it.
After looking up that model truck, I do NOT think this box will fit his truck. The Husky on-sale box is 70″ and meant for full-size trucks, and it looks like the Mazda is only compatible with 60-62″ mid-size truck boxes.
alexis lawrence
thanks for your help
alexis lawrence
i want to buy my hubby a tool box for the back of his truck is the one that on sale good and sturdy; he has a Masda BT-50 think its 2013

Does anyone know if the Ridgid 12 inch sliding dual compount miter saw a good deal at $399 or is it better to wait for something else or another brand to go on sale?
Stuart
I have no experience with that saw, but know you will be hard pressed to find another sliding 12″ dual compound miter saw for $400. If you buy it, try it, and don’t like it, you can always return it.

I’m curious about this ad scan. I’ve seen another one online and its completely different. Another one I have seen has a ryobi impact/driver kit for $100. Which I think is a good deal, but I don’t know which ad is correct.
On a different note. What do you think of the ryobi one+ line? I have a 3 piece kit of theirs and like it. But its my first tool set and don’t know much.
Thanks 🙂

It’s possible you saw Home Depot’s 2012 flyer, which does feature a Ryobi One+ drill and impact driver combo for $99.
A lot of deals and coupons sites published Black Friday 2013 pages to get ahead in search engine rankings before 2013 flyers were even available. The My guess is that the one you saw never swapped out the adscans for this year’s.
The Ryobi One+ 18V Li-ion line is quite good. It’s designed for DIYers and is also suitable for pros on a budget. You won’t get the latest and greatest features and performance, but the tools are mostly decent.
You do have to be careful of the holiday season “special buys” as they sometimes come bundled with lower-power or stripped-down versions of regular products.

Yep. It was last years ad. Thank you for clearly that up.
I may go the eBay rout to pick up a impact driver bar bones.
Thanks for the help.

It could be that the exact sale item wasn’t listed online yet, the price will drop starting Thursday when the sale goes live, or the deal is only available in stores.
