I think the 15pc + 25pc Shockwave bundle for $20 and free shipping is an especially good bundle. I believe that only one of the cases is of the new customizable Packout-compatible style, but it’s hard to beat the value of the Red Helix drill bit set.

There seems to be two types, so make sure you know which one you get. The one in the first image is exactly what people are saying: the worst. The second type is one that the bits going in/out side way…I believe this is the Bosch type which now everyone has adopted. The different between the two type should be a text book example of ergonomic. It is a shame that they still make and sell the first type.

I would not recommend the Shockwave Impact drill bits. About 30% of new ones I received in this type offer snapped at base after 2-3 uses.

Thank you for the sale info. I went to my local Home Depot to see if the 15 piece drill bit set was available in store. It was not but I was advised to check with the customer service desk. The store employee checked and confirmed it had to be ordered and offered to place the order for me. Once the item was displayed on her screen, it was only $8.00. I ordered three sets. Perhaps the quality of drill bits included in these sets sold at home centers have gotten better lately. But I have never found drill bits at Home Depot to be useful for much beyond drilling wood and light metal. I’ve found some of the hex-shank “titanium” coated bits to be just run-of-the-mill sorts of tools and will stick with USA made industrial twist drill bits whenever I have the choice. Unfortunately – a small set of USA-made twist drills will cost about twice as much as the $15.97 Milwaukee set , not cover the larger sizes and not come with hex shanks:

These aren’t terrible, but in my experience US made or quality import industrial spec drills are superior. One of my big annoyances with many of the drill bit sets from big box stores is that they have all sorts of silly tip designs on them. I haven’t found any advantage to the strange tip shapes–they seem to be mostly marketing garbage– yet the disadvantage is clear: they’re more work to sharpen.

The cobalt drill bits are the only ones that are actually harder (its a different steel alloy, not a coating) and are actually better for drilling steel.

The cobalt alloy bits that I’ve used are indeed harder – and more brittle too. They are useful for hard steels and some other drilling. For some applications one can also resort to tips with carbide alloy or other hard materials like diamond. Solid carbide bits may be needed for efficient drilling some case-hardened steels or tool steels. We did a lot of aircraft work in our fabrication shop – and many of the adapter bits (1/4-28 screw shank) were cobalt alloy.
I’m not sure it was tip geometry, a dull bit or just inferior steel – but I had a neighbor struggling with drilling holes in a trailer hitch. He was using a new set of bits (I think from HD in a red case). I brought over some machine-screw length (tend to be stiffer than jobber length) regular steel USA made bits and we had no issue completing the holes. I had thought that maybe he had work-hardened his first hole attempt – and was prepared to go home to fish out some cobalt bits – but we never got that to that need.

I used these drill bits today to drill through two 5/8 thick bronze rudders to mount zincs. They handled the job very well and I still managed to slice my finger putting the bits back in the case lol.

Two things. No more flat heads, I can’t give them away I just recycle them. And can we get sales or kits without more plastic boxes. They need sales on bits that come in efficient cardboard boxes that can be disposed of instead of piles of plastic waste that’s not getting recycled. Not everyone needs a new case evertime they want some t15s. A local store sells boxes of bits and can’t keep them in stock, they keep them next to the register.

The irony of what you said is that I needed just 2-3 bits, andto buy them separately (what I assume to be the same Milwaukee Shockwave bits) on a cardboard card would have cost me more than this entire set including the case. This set even comes with 2 of the size I seem to wear out the fastest.

I had not looked at Bridge City in years. Back then they were still made in the USA – looked nice but perhaps a bit over-designed and pricey. Now made in China some of those attributes still seem to apply. I looked at their 20% off sale on a HP-6FX mini multi plane. Looked OK at $699 – but adding in the full set of 17 cutters/accessories – it comes to a whopping $3311.83.

I just took the $699 sale price for the plane, then started scrolling down through each of the cutter sets (multiple sizes for each style) – each on sale for 15-16% off. If I did my arithmetic correctly it added to just shy of $3312. Maybe I missed some 5 accessory package. If I wanted to gift a combination plane (mine is an old Stanley 45) – the alternative would be a Veritas (made in Canada) for $439 – it has 45 blades available if you count both metric and imperial sizes. A full 45 blades can be purchased for $1767. So, the Veritas – with absolutely all of its cutters would be about 2/3 the price of the Bridge City package. Not having the tools side-by-side I am not able to say which is better or if one has more or different capabilities than the other. But I still think that the Bridge City is pricey.
