Irwin 81-piece Drill Driver Bit Set

Over at Amazon, this Irwin 81-piece drill and screwdriver bit value pack is on sale for $15, and it even comes with a bonus tool bag. The set includes 27 1-in and 2-in screwdriver bits, 15 black oxide twist drill bits, 3 Speedbor spade bits, 35-piece “deluxe driver set,” and the tool bag.

It looks this was a retail holiday special that was closed-out after Christmas. We purchased a couple of similar Irwin sets a few years ago, and the twist drill bits were disappointing. The screwdriver bits are not a favorite of ours but do come in handy every now and then, and the spade bits were top-notch.

Stuart, was it you that posted about these multi-bit sets last year about only have a small number of quality bits and the rest made out of pot metal?

I briefly mentioned these bits in last year’s Husky holiday tool guide, but probably complained about them elsewhere as well. While maybe not pot metal, these drill bits are all generally so-so.

I think I know what you’re talking about, but gave up after 5-minutes of fruitless searching. The article described how a writer or woodworker went overseas, and interviewed workers at a factory that put together cheap drill bit sets. A few of the drill bits were good quality but the rest were made absolutely junk.

I don’t think Irwin does that with their economy bits, but the bits do seem built for light duty usage.

Yeah, your memory serves you correctly. Too bad mine doesn’t and I thought it was you that wrote it.
