One Last Chance to Buy a Leatherman Juice Multi-Tool

Leatherman Discontinued Juice Multi-Tool Notice

Leatherman sent a newsletter today, saying that their final batch of Juice multi-tools is set to “drop” on October 18th, 2022.

They add: “once they’re sold, they’re gone for good.”

Well, that’s sad. But on the bright side, at least they’re giving everyone a heads-up. I thought the Juice series was already officially discontinued, seeing as how you can’t buy it anywhere.

I missed out on quite a few Leatherman multi-tools, such as certain keychain models and other styles of Juice tools. If the Juice was still on my wishlist, I would indeed mark my calendar for a chance to get one.

It’s unclear whether the Juice “drop” will be on the main site, or Leatherman’s clearance section, but I would assume the latter.

Leatherman Juice CS4 in Blue

From the newsletter image, it looks like it’s the Leatherman Juice CS4 that’s on the way out – or back for one last go since it currently isn’t available at Leatherman’s website or their usual retail partners.

The current version of the Juice CS4 launched in 2014 in several colors. It features anodized aluminum handles and 15 tools and functions:

  • Needlenose pliers
  • Regular pliers
  • Spring-action scissors
  • Wire cutters
  • Hard-wire cutters
  • 420HC knife (2.6″ blade)
  • Extra-small, small, medium/large slotted screwdrivers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Bottle opener
  • Can opener
  • Corkscrew with assist
  • Awl
  • Push/pull saw
  • Lanyard ping

The CS4 is advertised as being made (or at least assembled) in the USA.

It’s obvious they want to market the wine opening ability, yet that seems like a minor aspect of this tool. It actually seems like a swiss army knife if those were designed as a pliers-based multi tool – maybe the “huntsman” model is a reasonable parallel?

The only “wine” aspect seems like the corkscrew – and plenty of SAKs have that. It has other uses besides corks – e.g. untying knots, using your SAK as a t-handle bag carrier, storing other tools like the fire ant or precision screwdrivers.

Not that I would rush to buy this model, but it seems like it might fill a niche. It’s small and the tool loadout is reasonable.

Most Juice models had corkscrews. Here, I think they were just being cheeky.

The Juice is small, pocketable, and has softer aesthetics compared to other tools like the Skeletool and Wave.

A wine opener is one of those tools that’s hard to replicate with other ones; I could definitely see someone wanting it.

I own this and the cork screw has been used many times. It’s the easiest lady pleaser. It has gone through leatherman warranty for repairs twice in its life. The tools rust and break off since it’s small. I love this thing.

A bottle opener and corkscrew are the stupidest things to put on a multitool.

Victorinox does make knives without them. Corkscrew is useless to me, I don’t drink wine. I can open a bottle with just about anything, so the bottle opener is too.

I think we’ve had this discussion about semantics before. Most people don’t consider a SAK to be a “multi tool” even though it technically is.
Even if you go go victorinox.com they segregate their “pocketknives” (the classic SAK) from their “swiss tools” (Leatherman style).

          • Stuart

            Oct 16, 2022

@MM, then what about the Juice?

The semantics don’t change my point.

Hugely successful companies continue to build pocket tools that include bottle openers and corkscrews. Most tools have a bottle opener, and many have corkscrews.

“These are the stupidest functions on a tool” is contradicted by reality.

            @Stuart
I have no point to make regarding the Juice. And I do not agree with the claim that bottle openers or corkscrew are stupid choices for multi-tools.
My point was limited to the fact that what functions victorinox puts in their SAKs has little bearing on what most people expect out of a multi-tool. I wasn’t disagreeing with your conclusion one bit; I was disagreeing that particular line of reasoning.

            Oct 16, 2022

Plenty of companies get rich selling stupid crap. My wants for a multitool are not profit generated. I feel there are more useful tools to take their place, or just leave them off the tool for less weight.

The wonderful thing about the juice is it has a non locking blade making it perfect for the UK market as it fits into the UK legal carry category.

Actually, I think this particular Juice would be better than an SAK for opening wine, because it has that “assist” tool built into the bottle opener, similar to the classic waiter’s corkscrew. The assist tool catches the lip of the opening, and lets you lever the cork out, which is a lot easier than having to pull the cork straight out directly (about 1/3 the effort, just from eyeballing the various lengths), the way SAKs would.

I’d be tempted to get one for my foodie or drinkie friends.

I have the Juice S2. Same thing minus the corkscrew, saw and awl. I bought it because it is slightly thinner in the pocket and I normally have a SAK Outdoorsman on me as well.

I don’t normally carry a multi tool but the Juice is my “go to” when I do carry one due to its compact size yet decent pliers and scissors. I added a Niteize stick on pocket clip. The S2 still has the corkscrew assist tool because it is also the bottle cap lifter. Always wondered why it was such a goofy shape. Makes sense now that I know it is designed as the “assist” for the corkscrew. I would like to have this original model as I see benefit to the saw and corkscrew in allowing me not to need the SAK with me also. I have used the corkscrew on my SAK to open a bottle of wine once at a picnic. I have used it about 4000 times to undo knots and such. It also holds the eyeglass screwdriver which sees substantial use.

I would absolutely consider buying this limited run. Only problem is that, in the current economy, I am sure it will be priced much higher than I want to pay for an occasional use tool right now.

Then again, I see how much some of the retired Leathermans are going for on eBay and it could be an investment if I don’t end up using it much.

I am something of a wino and have opened multiple bottles of wine with sak and a juice tool. The “assist” lever on the juice is indeed exactly what you want in a wine opener, it works really well and the screw itself is good. Using a sak is more of an emergency thing, as while the steel is high quality enough getting the cork out is purely a brute strength affair. So if I expect to be opening any wine I’ll definitely carry the Leatherman even though I’m normally partial to victorinox for edc.

It’s not just the corkscrew. The end of the cap lifter can be used as a lever to assist pulling the cork, plus the blade shape is suited to removing foil. The Juice tool set includes everything you would find on a classic ‘waiter’s friend’ or sommelier knife

Not to mention a spreader for butter, soft cheese, etc. My wife couldn’t find our regular corkscrew last night, so I used my Flair, which did the job with no problem. I remember buying it at Costco back in the day, but I’ve only used it occasionally since then. Great tool, though.

I have almost all the Juice models, but my favorite is the Orange one (S2). Back when I had to wear slacks to work, it was my daily carry tool because it didn’t take up very much room yet it could do serious work if needed. The only thing that kept it from being the perfect tool for that role was the lack of a file of some sort. It really only needed to be a nail file, but any kind of file would’ve worked. I thought of gluing something to one of the scales, but never got around to it.

I predict massive server crashes…Garage ordering raised to some exponential power.

I’m truly sorry that they’re selling this as the end of the line. I’m surprised that it wouldn’t be a better choice to give the Juice line some thoughtful updates and put them back on the market. Many of them fetch crazy prices on eBay, so I think there’s still a solid demand for a Leatherman tool in that general zone.

Maybe, but I wouldn’t think so. The Juice has always been more of a casual tool.

Then again, if this is the last chance to get one, and it’ll be at clearance pricing, count me in for a backup.

The orange Juice was my first multi tool, probably close to 20 years ago now. A few years ago, for some reason, I decided to collect all of the juice models with the original scales. Got them all except the blue one, and I imagine that’s going to be even harder to find these days.

Discontinued Leatherman tools get crazy prices on eBay. Squirt E4s go around or over $100 regularly now. That was an indispensable edc tool for me for years as it is tiny yet can disassemble an entire laptop (so long as it doesn’t have Torx screws, and even then the tiny flathead can get some of those). The P4 and S4 and later *S4 models with scissors lack the true Philips screwdriver head that makes the E4 so much more useful.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see these get snatched up quickly. Hope I remember to check for them.
