Leatherman Skeletool Pliers Open

Home Depot was selling the Leatherman Skeletool multi-tool for $30 during the holiday season. We reviewed the Skeletool multi-tool a long time ago, and still LOVE it!

Andrew sent in a tip that Home Depot has dropped the price to $20, as they presumably seek to quickly clear out any Skeletools left over after the winter holiday season.

Right now you can buy it online with free shipping, or in-store pickup.

This is a fantastic minimalist EDC multi-tool. It has all the features you might need on a regular basis, without typical hiking, camping, and outdoors features, such as a saw, file, or can opener.

$20 is an incredible price on the Skeletool. If you intend to buy one, don’t delay, they won’t last long at this price. A lot of the stores near me are sold out, and those that do still have Skeletools for in-store pickup have single-digit inventory.

Amazon has reduced the price of their listing to $30, which is/was itself a great price for the Skeletool. But $20 is better. I’ll keep checking Amazon’s pricing, in case they match Home Depot’s $20 “these tools have got to GO” price.

Note: The Leatherman Skeletool featured in my review (link above) has a plain edge blade. Leatherman changed the tool design a few years ago, to feature a combination plain edge and partially serrated blade.

Dewalt Right Angle Adapter

Mosh sent in a tip about a new Amazon deal on Dewalt accessories. It’s a “Buy More, Save More” type promotion.

From January 1, 2016, through February 10, 2016, if you buy any 2 qualifying DEWALT accessory products, you can get 10% off. Alternatively, if you buy any 3 qualifying DEWALT accessories, you can get 20% off. All products must be shipped and sold by Amazon.com and added to cart. Discount automatically applied at checkout.

Sounds good to me! Buy 2 or more eligible products and save 10%, or buy 3 or more to get 20% off!

The promo is good on certain Dewalt attachments, power tool accessories, and accessory sets. There are over 3,000 eligible products, and I can’t seem to find any exclusions yet.

Black & Decker BDCS30C Cordless Screwdriver

Amazon is also running a promo on Black & Decker’s 4V Max cordless screwdriver. Buy the screwdriver, for ~$30, get a free attachment!

Black & Decker 4V Screwdriver Attachments

Attachment options include:

  • Multi-cutter for cardboard, carpet, packaging, and other such materials
  • Offset screwdriver head
  • Right angle screwdriver head

My recommendation is that if you find one for $20, pick it up. I purchased one back in November and it has found it’s way into my EDC gear.

Is it the greatest knife, or pliers, no, but you can tell that it’s usually a more expensive knife because when you compare it to other Leatherman actual $30 knives, the materials and finish are much better. Also it has real screwdriver bits (albeit flattened), a blade that you can extend and retract with your thumb without having to open the pliers, and two ways to clip onto your pants.

That last one has been the killer feature for me. The knife you have with you is better than the knife you have at home. I like using the pocket clip when I have jeans with large pockets or a phone pocket by the knee, but when I’m wearing other pants with smaller pockets, the carabiner style clip allows me to clip it to a belt loop so I can always carry it.

Still had skeletools in my local HD in Houston. They also had lots of Rebars for 19.89.

I bought the Skeletool for $30 a couple weeks ago. It’s been clipped to my jeans every weekend since. For $20 I just picked up a second one and am thinking about grabbing a 3rd.

Saw the post a couple of hours ago, ran out to my local HD and grabbed one of the last 3 they had left. I have the Wave and love it but dont carry it everyday, almost bought the skeletool during Christmas for the $30 price but balked. After reading the reviews on here the last few months I had to go pick one up for an EDC.

I grabbed two back in early December at $29.99. I took them back when I saw they weren’t selling. I just repurchased two at the new price point. Best buy so far this year! Thanks for the update!

I’ve got a feeling that Leatherman is about to upstage the Skeletool with a new announcement. I too bought one at $30.00 and felt good about it. This price is a virtual no brainer. I’ll bet that they’re clearing out old inventory before introducing a new item.

They announced a new Skeletool RX, which is another variant, not a replacement. The Skeletool RX comes with a fully serrated knife blade.

    Interesting,

Is that the only difference? The partial serration is as far as I’m willing to venture from a straight blade, but everyone is different. I hope they’re not eliminating the straight blade altogether.

I’ve seen a couple of new Leatherman products online, but have yet to see them available. One was an “upgraded” Wave that has scales similar to the Charge models. The other was a Micra with similar scales. They both looked very interesting. I’d like to see the Micra version in person in particular.

Oops, one more difference – one of the screwdriver bits is actually a carbide-tipped glass breaker.

The Skeletool RX is intended as a “rescue knife,” with full and deep serrations being better suited for cutting clothing and seat belts. Serrations are better for cutting fibrous materials (rope too) than plain edge blades.

I haven’t seen anything about a new Wave or Micra, but sometimes these tools are changed up as limited editions or retailer-specific editions.

That’s interesting. For whatever reason, that seems like the last of their offerings that I’d expect to be modified in the direction of rescue or tactical purposes. I’m sure that others would see it differently .

You’re probably on the money with regard to the limited editions thing. I didn’t verify what I saw. They may have been limited models that will never see regular production status. They would’ve definitely made me look at both tools in a different light if they had.

I found a group of them at my local Home Depot, but they’re still priced at $29??

Does the price tag say $29/$30, or are they ringing up at that price?

They’re marked $30 at my local Home Depot, but on sale for $20 as expected. Nobody changed the price tag, presumably because they couldn’t find the display. At my HD, they were on a pallet rack pole in the tool aisle.

That’s a good question. I didn’t take on to the checkout, but expected there to at least be a sign or something to indicate the new price. I was actually there for something else and didn’t go with the intent to acquire another Skeletool.

Checked today at the Northtown HD (Burbs of Minneapolis) and the Skeletools on Clearance are gone.

But they still have some of the deals on deep discount from Christmas: $79 2-pack Ryobi 18V Lithium+ Batteries, $15 6″ Bessey F-clamps, $6 Bessey Spring Clamps, and some some PC nail gun that I can’t remember the size for $79.

Is the Skeletool still made in USA?

As far as I am aware, the Skeletool, like other Leatherman multi-tools, are manufactured in the USA, with some components or subcomponents being made elsewhere.

I think I heard that the files are made in Mexico?

The Skeletool is so close to being perfect: it just needs to have scissors. There is plenty of wasted space on the thing, which drives me crazy.

I compared it to a Wingman which has both a knife and scissors that can be opening from the outside and about 5-6 “tools” that lift up on the inside. The Skeletool is only slightly thinner and actually a bit longer! It’s kind of difficult to compare with its shape. Admittedly, the Skeletool is MUCH lighter. However, with all that volume they could definitely could make room for scissors.

After having a Wingman nearby for so long, I now consider scissors to be an essential part of the tool, along with the 3 tools the Skeletool already has: bit driver, knife, and pliers.

I’m sure they’ll get around to it eventually. I hope it is a similar design to the Skeletool because I like almost everything about it. A redesign of the carabiner/bottle opener would be nice. I personally find it useless and would just as soon have it completely removed if one were still able to grip the pliers sufficiently.

Scissors are handy, but where on the Skeletool would it go? A version with the main tool as scissors would be interesting. It would then basically be a supersized Style CS (https://toolguyd.com/leatherman-style-cs-mini-skeletool-scissors-keychain-multitool/).

I hope this means that Leatherman will be releasing an updated Skeletool with replaceable wire cutters amongst other options.
