Porter Cable 20V Impact Driver Kit: This kit, PCC642LA, is not the same as the regular kit that is typically priced at $110-149. It comes bundled with (1) Li-ion battery, not two, and the included battery charger is slower as it takes 3-hours to charge the battery.
Right now, Amazon has the 2-battery kit for $110, but I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether a second battery and faster charger are worth the $31 premium. This kit probably comes with a soft bag and not a hard carrying case.
Shop Vac 16-Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum: This is a holiday-special Shop Vac vac, but looks decent for the money. It features a 5.75 peak-HP motor (notice the peak part – this makes me think that it’s underpowered), 16-gallon tank, blower, and 12ft power cord, and it comes with a 6ft x 2.5″ hose, 2 extension wands, a utility nozzle, and cartridge filter.

Good deals. Or atleast they seem that way. The good quality stuff never seems to be a black Friday special. Not knocking the items that made the ad but you never see top tier items like in this case a dewalt 20v tool. Instead a crippled down Porter cable 20v tool. Home depot will probably offer $99 makita, Milwaukee, and 20v dewalt kits and on first impression you think your getting a great deal but then realize it’s lacking a second battery.
Another example is best buy will offer something like a 50″ flatscreen for like $350 and then your like “wow what an amazing price” but then realize the tv is junk and it’s made by a no name brand.
Why can’t we get top quality items at true black Friday prices?
futs
So you’re asking why companies want to make as much money as possible.
Stuart
Retailers and manufacturers still want to make a profit, that’s why you rarely see hefty discounts on less consumer-focused tools.
I wouldn’t call the Porter Cable 20V impact kit crippled. It’s more a compromise than anything. You get the same performance but give up the second battery and faster charging time. For a lot of users, a lower price is more important.
The reason you see similar Black Friday tool deals every year is because people keep buying sub-$100 drill and driver kits, cheap power tool accessory sets, and “special buy” hand tool sets. I’m guilty of this as well, as sometimes you can still get decent tools at bargain prices – you just have to know where to look and what not to buy.
Hang Fire
The real purpose of these specials is to get people to buy into the system. Once they buy an 18V (20V “Max”, whatever) battery tool, they are more likely to buy more in that family.
If the price is right, I see these as a poor bargain if they come with one LiIon battery, and a good bargain if they come with two. Indeed, you will see “bare tools” from 2 battery kits for months afterwards on eBay.
Stuart
Yes, and no. Don’t underestimate how many sales and how much revenue holiday season sales bring in. In some cases, brands are hoping for buyers to get pulled into a system. In others, it’s mostly about immediate revenue and profits. It can also be about brand familiarity. Someone that buys a Dewalt cordless for $90 might be more inclined to buy Dewalt drill bits and other accessories.

It’s not that the ShopVac is underpowered. It’s that 5.75HP is impossible on 110VAC/15Amps. That “peak” is “stall horsepower” the definition of which is just as fictional as the 5.75 number. It would have to be swinging a very heavy armature and/or flywheel to develop 5.75 momentary horsepower, and I’ll be a 20 dollar bill that it’s not. And since no one (in the sales department) defines how momentary that momentary “peak” horsepower lasts, it’s all an academic question anyway.

Dewalt oscillating tool kit for me 🙂 and maybe a 2-piece kobalt locking pliers…i mean, that is an 18 pack of beer price….the difference…an 18 pack lasts me a week…tools that I need for work lasts me for years that provide for my future 18 pack…lol
Stuart
If you buy the locking pliers, keep the receipt. I reviewed the Kobalt Magnum Grip pliers and really did not like them.

Every time I see a picture of one of those new Porter Cable cordless tools I think it looks like it’s made out of Legos. Is it just me? DC

I went to Lowe’s yesterday and was disappointed with the merchandising. Many of their cheapo tool sets and many of the items in this ad are already marked down with a price slash indicating they have been sold at a higher price. Having been in retail for many years I understand why they do this, but I consider it disingenious when the markdown is taken in the “stockroom” and rolled out to the floor at the “discounted” price.
Stuart
They’re definitely engaged in deceptive pricing. https://toolguyd.com/lowes-customer-service-and-deceptive-kobalt-tool-pricing/
Some of the Kobalt tools were put out on the floor with “new lower price” markings when they were never really available for sale prior to that.
But what can we do aside from call them out on it?
George
I am very interested in this Bosch 12v Set
The picture is not exactly showing up what are included in the package, in the product description below, it states the package includes 2 L-Boxx cases, it also states that Li-ion batteries charge in 60 minutes and come with a 2-year warranty. I am wondering what is model the battery is? Is it BAT413 (high capacity 1.5Ah) or the old Bat412 (1.3Ah)?
Stuart, What is your thought?
George
According this link
Battery may even be BAT144 (2Ah) which is even better. If it is true, this would be definitely a good deal.
Stuart
Looks like a good deal to me.
It looks like there will be different Bosch deals for different dealers. For instance, Amazon’s combo promo is a drill, driver, and radio plus 2x L-Boxx kit.
I can’t tell if 2.0Ah batteries will be included in the Lowes combo set. It’s possible, but they could be 1.5Ah batteries to save on cost.
George
Just got a reply from Lowes, it includes 2 Bat414 2Ah batteries. Very nice!
Kevin
Do you know if these deals will be online too? Looking at the kobalt workbench
Stuart
Most if not all of the deals will be available online, starting on Thanksgiving day. That’s why I went through the trouble of creating all of the links.
Jason
I think the best cheap power tool deal is the Dewalt Drill at $99 it get’s you in to the 20v system cheap with 2 packs and a charger. You can add on to the system by buying bare tools for other holidays and birthdays.
