It looks like Lowe’s might be bringing some changes to their military discount and appliance return policies.
We have heard from several anonymous sources, and although the information seems to corroborate, it is best to consider these to be rumors until the claims are officially substantiated.
According to the reports, Lowe’s is rolling out updates to their military discount and appliance returns policies on March 9th, 2022.

We asked Lowe’s for clarification and confirmation, but their PR team has not yet responded.
Update: Judging from readers’ comments, Lowe’s has indeed implemented changes to their military discount and appliance return policies. As of May 6th, 2022, Lowe’s still has not responded other than to say they’ll be forwarding our inquiries to the appropriate contacts.
Here is what is being said:
Military Discount Changes: The military discount will no longer apply to select product categories. From what has been relayed, certain products in lumber, building materials, and electrical categories will no longer be eligible to receive the 10% military discount.
One source said that affected lumber products will include dimensional lumber, plywood, and OSB, and that affected electrical items include wire and cable.
The changes – if true – can still be significant even if limited in scope.
There are some existing exclusions already, such as gift cards and “volume or special discount programs (including, but not limited to, Contractor Packs, Buy in Bulk, Bulk Savings, Special Value, New Lower Price, and Was:Now).”
Appliance Return Changes: Sources are saying that customers will have 48 hours from delivery to return major appliances. Customers with products in original, unopened packaging or purchasing with LLC will still have 30 days to return.
(It has been explained that purchasing with LLC refers to Lowe’s credit cards.)
Looking at Lowe’s return policies online, major appliances are currently covered by a 30-day return policy.
I would presume that damaged or defective merchandise would be excluded by the rumored policy change. If so, this would most affect buyer’s remorse returns, measurement error returns, and other such reasons.
As you might be aware, Lowe’s recently launched a new PRO Rewards Program. If these rumored changes are indeed scheduled to go into effect next week, could it have somehow been prompted by Lowe’s “MVPs” program?
We’ll update this post once we learn more.
Mr. Certainly
Double digit quarter over quarter growth must be taking its toll — apparently there’s not much fruit left on the vine when it comes to competition & innovation. They’re going after the low hanging fruit like military veterans discounts.
MM
Oh, they’ve been working on innovation too! It wasn’t long ago that Stuart posted about Petco sections inside Lowes stores!
Hutch
When the hell is Lowes going to get into the 21st century? Their in stone computer system is a DOS based relic from 40 years ago. Every time I use my credit card my x-wife’s name comes up first . I have tried ad nauseum to get them to remove it but they try to delete it, but it pops back up next time I use the card. Maddening!
Shannon
Hi! Lowe’s associate here. In store associates cannot delete that information. The customer has to call the corporate customer service number and go that route.
White Lasagna
Yeah Right. call the customer service department? Well I did. let’s see, one was on lunch and then I was told to call back and I did. the next rep was gone for the day.so I called the next day and after 3 transfers I get someone and they told me my $500 lawnmower was out of my 2year warranty and couldn’t get an exchange. I called kobalt directly to see if I could get a replacement part for it and they told me the mower was covered for 5 years.they gave me a reference # and said to return it and after a calm disagreement I finally got a store credit for a new one.I will never buy an additional warranty again because it is a waste of money! Oh and if you’re not going to honor your military discounts anymore than excuse my French and F***K OFf!
HushHouse254
My wife started the process for the military discount program. I showed the clerk my id . Unfortunately, the clerk input my wife’s name so every time I use it they call me Suzanne. I asked if there was a way to change it. Nobody in the store can do it and I had to go on their web site to request the change. That was three years ago. Still waiting! I also tried calling and that was a waste of time and got no where. If they give me gup on using it, I’ll just go across the street to the Depot. And for smaller stuff I’ve been going to Ace and have had really good experiences there. They actually have people who can help.
Swanson
That doesn’t work either as well as I opened a new account twice but because my ex it tied to my home number she shows up on my new account
I have even tried without a home phone I’d have to change numbers and change address to fix it
Manny
Thank you Shannon.
Lowe’s and Home Depot have given millions of dollars away in Military discounts and it came to a sudden stop for certain products, why? because times change besides there is no more war in which USA is involved.
Larry Chandler
You stated; “Military discounts and it came to a sudden stop for certain products, why? because times change besides there is no more war in which USA is involved.”
Your statement clearly demonstrates that you have never served in the military where you were in danger of immediately losing your life. For the veterans that served in these circumstances, many of them are still in a war. It’s called P.T.S.D.
You should research it, educate yourself, you won’t be as ignorant.
daniel
I don’t believe this is true. My father’s name showed up on my account and stayed there for many many years. No clue as to how it happened. After my father died and his name showed up on my next trip I asked them to fix this problem. My tone was different. It hasn’t happened since that visit. I didn’t call anyone at corporate or customer service. I just found the right person who listened. They are rare but do exist.
Jay
Larry Chandler,
Manny didn’t say that was his opinion. Simply an observation of what might be happening. The fact is that we didn’t get these retail Veteran’s benefits until the patriotic wave following 9/11. And now that we are out of the middle east, more or less, and people are tired of the wars and their costs, some of that wave is dying down. For the most part, before 9/11, most didn’t give a damn about us Vets. Now the new patriotism has to do with who you support politically, not whether you served.
Lee
Actually using DOS, they are less likely to get hacked. Embrace it!
Timbalero
DOS = LANG/COBOL, same crap if there is a lazy staff watching when the clock cracks the lunchtime and then clock out for the day.
walt
try having the card issuer to remove her name from their system
the lowes system can only read what’s stored on the cards strip
SGM W B retired USARMY
Christine
It is true! I just went to purchase outdoor lights and the military discount was nit valid for this purchase.
John
Similar experience! I’ve tried online and called corp only to find her name pops up the next time I make a purchase. I’ve asked my current wife to just change her first name to my ex’ and it will all be good.
The customer self checkouts are a joke if they think it will save labor. Your front of house is key and should be staffed to get customers out and feel good about their purchase, not feel dumb using scanners that inevitably have missing bar code data on items
William Miller
I have never had a problem with Lowe’s. Veterans discounts or service.
Jan Johnson
I agree John. If Lowe’s isn’t giving me a discount or mailing me a W-2, I won’t be checking out my purchases.
NunYaBsns
AMEN! They’ve made millions the last couple years, can’t get their tech updated, dropping discounts on military, will not buy enough hand held devices to cover 1/8 of the store. Will not give raises. You nailed it!
Angela Clancy
Husband just bought a faucet snd was told the military discount does not apply. What is happening at Lowes? I guess its time to shop at Home Depot
Bill
If the item you purchase is already discounted lowes does not apply veterans discount. That may be the reason.
Robyn
we fought this for years with the corporate lowes folks…my husband’s lowes card did not work when scanned at some registers but not all…i am well aware of their DOS BASED system…come on they can do better
Call these 2 people for help….it’s ALMOST impossible to get real CORPORATE customer service and it took me lots of digging before I sort of found help. I hope this information helps you, please share it with others too!

Blame it on the computer! I don’t care if it is DOS or some AI program. The computer ONLY does what the programer told it to do.
Evan E Brister
Mr. Powell, What is the REAL reason for Military Discount change? Did some veteraan owned business use discount for large purchases of building supplies for business use. That kind of inconsiderate action should not effect the veteran homeowners whose want to improve their homes or some some small DIY projects. I just spent $700 in lumber supplies to repair my porch deck and couldn’t get the discount. Unfair ! I’m retired of fixed income so every penny saved is helpful. PLEASE reseach your facts to find better solution and not forget the military home owners.
Unhappy customer
I will be taking my business somewhere else. My husband is a 30 year veteran, and we had to buy a dryer tonight that is when we learned no more veterans discount. They should be checking military id on every purchase, no military id no discount. As any active duty or retired veteran will tell you, we always have them, we never leave them at home (as I’ve heard that on many occasions). That is just a messed up slap in the face, thanks for nothing lowes. My delivery date is at the end of the week. I will be price shopping.
Kaleb
I am a veteran that happens to work at Lowes. Everything that is said in this article is true as we had a meeting discussing it.
SSG MIKE
Well let me tell ya what buddy that works at Lowe’s….I would be willing to bet your company loses ALOT of business because of this decision…I mean I buy everything home improvement related at Lowe’s because of the discount ….and cause I really hate Menards….
BaileyJ
Same here. I would pay a higher price at lowes because they had a great veteran program. Guess I will look elsewhere now.
Shannon
Menards has 11% off everything, you don’t have to be a veteran!
We were going to sign up for the Lowe’s Veterans discount but after seeing the list of excluded items we declined! What a way for them to say Thank you to veterans!!!
Craig Bussanmas
I thought it was a stand up thing for a business to do.To give me a discount now jerking it back. I bought from them because I thought you had my 6. OSCAR Mike
Paul F
Home Depot rolled out the same policy. I didn’t know until I just spent about $900 and my military discount got me $0.53 off my total for a little pot my wife wanted.
Jamie Jedamski
I am grateful to any company that gives a military discount … yes to Lowes too.Lowes is not obligated to give any discount. We need to remember that.
Wallace Holt
Have you ever heard of companies using a tactic called, ” bait and switch ” ? That’s why I’m upset after spending about $ 45,000.00 a Lowes last year. And now they don’t care. They also never informed me a head of time, just let me go to there store and make a fool of myself. Screw Lowes. Keep the 10% I’m personally done with them. I let everyone know they suck!
Ron
I was able to get my discount yesterday on a new HVAC filter but when I went in today to purchase a new refrigerator, I was told it no longer applies on appliances. So, on the big items where it’s needed I can’t get it, I’ll take my business elsewhere.
Milton M
Well why in the didn’t you notify your customers! Not even posted anywhere nor published. Come on Home Depot to Marianna Florida!!!!!!!
Lisa Jones
Home Depot has changed too.. it does not give discounts on lumber, wire, appliances, or much of anything. AND they limit the discount to $400 for the YEAR.. This policy took place in March as well.
Nick S
The reason they are changing it and that Home Depot put a limit is because of the contractors using their military discount for their job.
It was meant for us who shop there for our own home improvement items but like usual it gets abused and they can’t lose money on it.
Patrick
Yeah but get the credit card and save 5percent on everything oh and the kicker recieve an extra 5 percent on july 4th purchases
Charlie Cracraft
Relay to your manager that I will
Be paying more elsewhere but I will not shop at lowes again! Their name fits them Perfectly!! Low!
william barry powell
don’t even bother, because they don’t care if you buy from them or anyone else. they are just after that weekly paycheck.
Glendora Withrow
The only innovation they are working on is making more money and stocking less items. Mernards gives 11 percent back on everything, no longer a Lowes customer or Home Depot after they only give the discount on low price items and overchange on the more expensive items.
John E
Welcome to late stage capitalism!
PTBRULES
Late stage Capitalism isn’t a real thing, just a made up term by socialists to sound negative.
Joe
Exactly
Msmoneypenny
Oh well. The wood at Lowes is bad quality anyway. No big loss there. We will go elsewhere for that.
Don
You are right. LOWES best wood is the worst wood to build with! Try to find a straight board at Lowes , impossible!
Ron
The best lumber is shipped overseas
YoYQue
You mean socialist USA. We already a socialist country. Expect it only apply to the rich and corporations. Is also called, privatize the earning and socialize the losses. A CEO run the company to the ground, they get socialized assistance, the workers get fired. The workers pay taxes, riche and corporations Zero taxes. That’s called SOCIALUSM. But there are to many ignorant people that only see socialism as only helping the poor.
Barrie Hazzard
Well Said!!And you can add National Parks…Federal Highways…Social Security &..Medicare..
Johnny
Big time…Lowes always sucked though.
Mary
So true! I called 3 times regarding a botched delivery of linoleum. I was told they would investigate and call me back, no one ever did! I live in Southern Illinois so Lowes and Menards are the only home improvement stores that are only a hour away. They both rip you off on delivery charges!
CD
I’ll start going to HomeDepot. Boycott Lowes
Tim
Where I live it’s had military discount removed since January. I go to service desk and they give it to me anyways on total.
Ray
Home Depot already made the same change….
Jack
I feel the same way, if they care more about their profit margins than their customers then I’m honestly going to start shopping at home Depot. We’ll see how this plays out though.
FrankyD
Yeah, home depot will cover my military discount. I guess I am done with lowes also.
Cog357
Yep time to ignore Lowes
Poor service, they can have their military discount as you had to put it online with information they did not need to know
Their would is expensive, warped and not straight
All good wood goes to Japan and Korea, ask the inspectors in Canada and Toseburg Forest Products
Adam W. Luzier
Last time I went to Home Depot they wouldn’t honor their discount with me because I didn’t have a service related injury or illness. Oh and it wasn’t a major holiday either. So the Depot sucks too!
Fister79
Home depot has made the same changes to their military discounts. J just bought some wood from Depot today along g with 3 other items, I got a little over $2 discount, and my total was $100 and some change.
Michael Vincent
I have been using Lowe’s exclusively since the beginning of the year because HD down graded their military discount policy to exclude building materials. I no longer have an incentive to go there.
Paul Dubois
I was tricked by a Lowe’s cashier to sign up for their MVP program. I soon found out my Military account no longer existed and was told by customer service the MVP Account negated the military account. Lowe’s HQ customer service told me I couldn’t undo the process and was stuck with the MVP account which by the way is GARBAGE. Three days of phone calls, store visits to fix the problem and my Military discount remains a thing of the past. I now drive a little farther to Home Depot and will strive to never step foot in a Lowe’s again. LOWE’s DOES NOT HONOR MILITARY VETERANS!!!
william barry powell
they are just as bad.
21 Year Veteran
Me too! Last night I considered purchasing a refrigerator $3800 (EXcluding extended warranty, delivery and haul away and sales tax). When I looked at the checkout discount it was $1.10.(one dollar annd ten cents). Insulting. Bought the same fridge from COSTCO (+5 year extended warranty) with free delivery, install and haul-a-way. Out the door cost was $3100.
James
So Lowe’s not giving you a 10% discount did you a favor by sending you somewhere else to save even more money?
21 Year Veteran
Yes! And more importantly, a reason to shop anywhere, but Lowe’s.
Stuart
No politics!

Bill
Bout time they get rid of this crap i mean not giving the other hand a discount ! Meaning the ppl that built the roads to come to your store or the ppl that pay taxes and keep your store open . not disrespecting the military but come on we need discount too
Jason
There are plenty of coupons out there you can get. I bought my appliances together since Samsung had a better deal and didn’t get a discount on top. Sorry to hear your hurt over veterans getting a 10% discount on most stuff there. I guess it is cool that contractors get better pricing but hey, let’s hate on those putting their lives on the line. It is good to know that you find vets getting 10% off is that offensive.
Bill Martin
Very well said.. And thank you for standing up for us veterans.
So many places say sorry no discounts for veterans only 55+ get discounts.
I think every store should give veterans. First responders. Nurses. Teachers. And students 20% discount. Its not like they don’t get a huge discount. They don’t pay 40 for a 4×8 sheet of osb. Try 6 or 8 …
Jonah
Exactly! In places like Washington state sales tax is 10.4%, God forbid we vetetans get the discount just to cover the sales tax…not anymore!
Victor
Samsung is CRAP! Try to get repair parts if anything breaks down you’ll be waiting FOREVER! Bottom line buy MADE IN AMERICA if you can find it!
william barry powell
i buy no Samsung period. i bought a 65 in 4K tv and in 6 months it had purple splotches on the screen. called samsung and they as much as said good luck with that.
Dave C
Please. Vet trashing during Vietnam was out of line, but vet worshipping has been out of control for 30+ years. They are not all heros by any stretch. Like any group some are truly admirable, some are fully abhorrent and the majority lie somewhere in between. Police and military are never even in the top 10 of dangerous jobs lists. That said, if they offer a military discount I’m going to take it. When I take it and then find out that the majority of items are excluded that leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Both Lowes and HD are doing it now. Want credit for military worshipping by offering a hollow discount is deplorable and dishonest, but hey…. welcome to corporate America.
John mann
Just Remeber those veterans and military personnel is the reason you were able to build those roads and be able to have that store in this free country
Mark
Thank you, John.
Candi,
Well said!!!
Rick
John, that’s right! Thank you!
Bill Martin
Absolutely correct john…
william barry powell
the only ones who don’t care, are the ones who never served. they watched the wars from their couches.
Bill
You certainly are disrespecting our military veterans, putting yourself on par with people who have made great sacrifice for their country some of whom have come home less than whole physically and or mentally. You are not equal to the “other hand”
Pete
You are right. Capitalism has joined the government. They dictate ALL THE TERMS of how we patronize their companies. Lowe’s CEO was hired after failing at J C Penny’s AND Home Depot. Currently destroying Lowe’s. Every time I shop there it’s very ugly to say the least. Have torn up my card. Home Depot is too damn liberal and P.C. Off to smaller hardware store. Screw Lowe’s and H.D.,!
Don Freigo
Ace is a better place to shop. Get gift card from amount spent over time. Store will order items for you from warehouse
John
Yeah back in the day lowes gave 10% to military and thete immediate family them they cut that out only to military what the hell lowes needs to shut its doors. Besides that they are robbing the public every day lumber is thru the roof then they raised prices on everything else. Like electric wire. Its past time to shut your doors lowes and change your company name to Crooks
John
Amen,
Veteran
The guy that’s building my roads didn’t sign up to put his life on the line for my country. Pull your head out of your cute little rear and salute a veteran
Jason
Not with that attitude I’m not.
Therealmacyd
Risk your life for your country then complain about my 10% discount. Many of us didn’t have a choice we we were drafted.
Go ahead and complain! We earned that right for you and every other American.
william barry powell
i was one of those guys building roads, hospitals, homes, office’s RR switch yards and shopping centers, i learned it in the USAF from 62 through 66 as a Combat Civil Engineer then went on for 29 more years in the same occupation. so i think you should rethink your comment. USAF REDHORSE. PRIME BEEF in 62-66.
curtis Varney
Because you say “not disrespecting the military” does not make what you said okay. The discount is a way of saying thank you to volunteers that give you the freedom to visit there store and pay taxes, by the way we pay taxes as well, and visit the stores on roads, but then we leave home and family for months at a time to deter invasion (ask Ukraine about this)
Mark
Amen.
Terry
Join the Army.
CJ
Discount for what? Building a road? What a joke..lol.
Marsha
Some veterans only have one hand and maybe one leg or they might be in a wheelchair they serve the country to protect it so you could go to Lowe’s and Shop.
Ben
Sorry to see that you are disparaging veterans who have guaranteed your freedoms, by putting their lives on the line for the majority of the rest, who have chosen not to risk their lives for freedom..Lowes understands this and hope they don’t change their discount program for veterans…
Dje
Then join an organization that provides a service for the good of the citizenry other country. One that is always on call at all hours, etc. Yes I consider all first responders, to include the electric grid & major disaster teams to be part of that group & forest rangers.
veteran here
first responders, fire fighters, and as bad as i hate to say it, some of the police force, some. and i say that because there are some low life, chicken sucking, donkey holes, some real worthless pigs on the police force…… anyway. but especially fir fighters. every fire is a warzone for them fellas. hats off and a salute to them folk too.
Betty Ulsas
Why do those that look down on police usually can’t write without using fowl language and most likely have a criminal record?
Jim
“Chicken sucking” is the fowl language you are referring to? Maybe the person commenting was illegally arrested, charged and convicted. There are thousands and thousands of police audit videos showing bad policing in America.
Maxx
Why don’t you serve? And please don’t say. I tried they wouldn’t take me! Your a Hoot!
Stuart
Whether it accurately reflects how you truly feel or not, your comment suggests a complete lack of appreciation for the service and sacrifices of military and related public service personnel.
You’re essentially saying “I don’t get a special discount, and so military members shouldn’t get one either.”
I hope this isn’t what you meant to convey.
Brad
OK, I’ll play. If everyone gets a discount, the stores would just up the sticker prices so that 10% of comes out the same, and no one’s really getting a discount.
Randy
Hey buddy your full of crap veterans have earned awhile lot more than the 10 percent your being stupid about many have lost arms and limbs and suffered many castophic injuries
Eric
Bill you are disrespecting the military as is Lowes and for this you both suck. I pay taxes too. You don’t hear me whining like pathetic crybaby . Save your reply bill, cuz I don’t care what else you have to whine about.
YoYQue
We also pay taxes. And the only reason that others are allowed to build roads and other jobs is because We, the military, make sure the US is a free nation.
Perry
You should have joined the military. Sounds as if you are jealous. of those who served.
Tim
I agree what happened to senior citizens discount.!!!
Betty Culbreth Ulsas
Do you have to move wherever everytime you are told to, do you have to leave your family for months at a time, go to areas that are life threatening? Can you NOT just quit if you want to, go to jail if you don’t obey your boss? Does your spouse not have a chance to get seniority or retirement because you must move every 3 to 4 years? If you can say yes to all of this, I say you should get the same discount.
Vonn
Guess what after I retired after 26 years in the military and having spent over 7 years worth of deployments in the middle east I went to work building roads, funny thing is I never once got shot at, had to live in a dirt hole, eat food out of a plastic bag, wear the same cloths for two weeks, carry a 30 pound ruk all day, worry that every step I take will end up in an explosion, hold a dying 20 y/o with half his head blown away or spend 12 months away from my family every other year and for a salary that qualified my family for food stamps.
Larry Chandler
Vonn,
Thanks, for shining the light of truth upon this discussion.
william barry powell
i can relate. Civil Engineer during Vietnam , Commercial Construction for 34 years after.
Paul Dubois
Building roads? Paying taxes?? Yeah you really put it all on the line….wow!
Try making the tougher decision by putting on the uniform, then you can stop belly aching.
Retire MSgt USAF
Want a discount? Then be like the less than 1% of the population that signed up to serve their country! Those who were prepared to lay their lives on the line for the freedom of others!
Joe W.
Meanwhile one of the two Lowes in my town doesn’t even employ cashiers anymore. It’s self checkout or nothing. I’ve stopped going there entirely because every time it’s some issue and I end up waiting behind everyone else having issues with it too for the one attendant who’s responsible for all of it. Funny though, I haven’t seen any reduction in the prices I’m paying for all the money they’re saving on labor.
Mike
I agree. Giving the customer less, reducing their pledge to veterans, and Lining their own greedy pockets..
Judyth Assad
Boy am I glad I sold my Lowe’s stock. They should go visit a VA hospital and see both men and women who have given so much . Yes, others also give to their communities. Police, firefighters etc. How much will they lose to honor many. I am so disappointed in Lowe’s.
william barry powell
someone finally said it. GREED runs this country.
Thomas Nichols
Being retired military,I will not shop at LOWES anymore. Higher prices, poor customer service, and discounts on selected products will drive customers away especially in military communities.
J Veteran
Exactly. If the do this I will drive the extra 5 min (for me) and go to Hone Depot where they will honor the 10% off all items.
No
They are going after Vet owned business. Not a good idea. I will be shopping Home Depot.
Mike Force
Amen brother!
BT
Home Depot hasn’t given a Vet Discount on Lumber, Electrical, or Plumbing for years… That is why I shopped Lowes! Now, it won’t make a difference!
Maxx
Home depot, has a limit on discounts for Vets. That is why I go to Lowes, but! I guess I’ll have to go both places now. But Lowe’s I really did appreciate it while it lasted.
Johnna
Me too. Every Lowes I’ve been to has a Home Depot within a quarter mile of it, but I went to Lowes because they showed respect to veterans: with the discount and parking spots reserved for vets.
That’s a poor management decision if they change it. Penny wise and pound foolish.
Mike
I concur!!
william barry powell
you mean the parking spaces the civilians park in so they don’t have to walk so far?
Jim Felt
The “difference” might be the brands they each tend to stock. Eagle v. Leviton for example.
Regardless of the inability of either chains local managers to particularly attract, nurture and promote great employees.
It’s just a marketing driven big box thing. Support locally owned if you really care.
Neil
Worked at a Home Depot over a Christmas. Couldn’t believe how badly I was treated. Certainly very different from there training videos.
Bryan
Better off switching to Menards. They atleast give a 12% rebate on almost everything. Lowes will lose my business if they remove the discount.
Vince
So will I.
Tony
Yea it looks like Warren Buffetts bank account isn’t growing as fast as it has been in the past, so he’s got to be greedy with Veterans like me. I’ll cut my card and shop at Home Depot from now on.
Stuart
Warren Buffet has nothing to do with this.
Timbalero
It is what it is! To be or not to be, the big guys are focus on saving that 10% discount. Go to the competition and say goodbye on the 8th. No more respect for us that defended Our Nation. There other great local stores as an alternative.
Mr Magoo
No discount for anyone 85 years old on open box wheelchair parts…..
Brian
I think they will not last . I work in facilities and shop a lot . I call them Blows but the B is silent. Have you seen the craftsman tools.
What a joke . Sears , Lowes – Eh!
Their biggest mistake is the way they frustrate the incoming phone customers
Home Depot
Daniel
Just went to Lowes today to buy a Shark Vacuum cleaner. Found the one I wanted and got ready to ring it up and the military discount would not take. I asked about it and they said the discount no longer applies to all lumber, all major appliances, most electrical components, and wiring. I’m not going to Lowes for anything else. I’ll be taking my business to a local hardware store from here on out. If Lowes don’t want to support veterans then I’ll support my local community.
Steve
Yes. What a shame. The entire military discounted program has become a joke.
Thinking seriously of just closing out my account.
Ron
Corporate enterprises all seem to “giveth and eventually take it away”. Veterans knew of the sacrifices and that is what makes them strong. Veteran discounts are slowly fading away………
Steve
Lowe’s corporation as a whole should be ashamed for taking away the military discount on lumber and appliances! Time to go back to the local Lumber stores and hardware stores. One pissed off Marine here!
Frank
Wondered how long the fake warm fuzzy appreciation for the risks and sacrifices made by veterans. Lots of phony types like that at lows.
Ted
Purchased 12 – 2×4 studs, not a large amount – not building a house. Had a hell of time getting registered for military but finally did a few years back. Today 03-30-22 used discount for lumber and found out it’s doesn’t apply. Now down the street Menards is offering 11% mail in rebate on ANY purchase. Rural King used to offer military discount, now Lowes… so goodbye Lowes and Rural King, hello Menards. May end up driving 50/60 miles to Home Depot. Corporate Greed
Ann
They are going after Veteran’s and Military in a very deceptive way. They ask at check out if you are military or veteran. Ask for ID. Provide a discount IF you create a Lowe’s account, provide your DD214, Drivers License, and phone number. They DO NOT care about military- veterans, it’s just another revenue stream.
Jeff Blackburn
Lowes is losing alot of customers due to the cutting of military discount. Lost mine.

I agree, I’m a disabled Vet on a very tight income, and one of the things I could always count on when I had a DYI project was. Going to Lowes, and picking up lumber nails or screws, and 14/3 or 10/3 wire, and odds and end plumbing. I guess now that I’m not saving that 10% I will shop at the local stores for now on. Return policies never bothered me, appliances hurt, but I don’t plan on buying them for at least eight years. Good going Lowes, I hope you lose a lot of business.
James Bennett
Lowes stock (March 20, 2020) price: $66.36 per share. Lowes stock (April 20, 2022) price: $208.74 per share. Their value triples in two years but yeah let’s squeeze the veterans who have allowed us to prosper and make our fortune. Great business model Lowes!
Wallace Holt
I just found out. Typical corporate greed bait and switch . I’m sure glad Lowes has our backs. I’m do pissed its unbelievable. I’m on disability because of 3 strokes . That little savings was big for a person like me.
Dave m
Boycott them and Home Depot both did it . Every time you buy something from the competition send receipt to headquarters and let see their losses mount while profit disappears. Supporting the troops mg A__!
Duane E Williams
I agree they take vet discount and chop off everything you build with. Go to Menards and still at least get 11% rebate on everything.
Paul Dubois
Yes they are….I recently made the fatal mistake of signing up for a Lowe’s MVP account. During the next visit I discovered my military status was wiped out and no more 10% discount. Lowes HQ customer service told me the MVP program negated my military status with them. Two more days of BS on the phone and visiting various stores and I’m giving up. I’ll no longer spend my many thousands of dollars at Lowe’s. Home Depot still honors vets and I’ll gladly drive the few extra miles to shop with them. To Hell with you Lowes!
Tell every vet you know!!!
Rich B
This week at Lowes I discovered at the lumber section check-out, with 2×4’s, that they were no longer offering the 10% military discount. I didnt find anything on the internet, with this update so I called Lowes and spoke with management, they have in fact stopped offering discounts on lumber and appliances, (Winchester Va). I asked why they weren’t advertising this, though of course it’s obvious.
PAUL DUBOIS
I went to a Lowe’s here in Northern Texas about two weeks ago. I tried to use my Veteran’s discount, which I’ve been using for many years, at a self check out register but I couldn’t find the usually present “Military” discount button and was told by a cashier (human) I had to go with her to receive the discount. She then pitched me the Lowe’s “MVP” program which Appealed to me because I would now would be able to categorize/itemize my receipts, so I signed up. A few days later I’m at another Lowe’s (where I spent no less than $30k last year renovating my guest house) and discovered my Military account was wiped out and non existent. When I spoke with the store’s customer service department I was told, “oh yeah, if you sign up for MVP you give up your Military discount.” They gave me the Lowe’s national customer service number who told me the same thing. I then asked them to simply cancel the MVP account and reinstate my military status account. Wouldn’t you know it? they actually
told me it was “impossible” to undo the MVP account. Three more days of long periods on the phone, back and forth to Lowe’s stores, and still no reinstatement of my military discount. Have I given up? Yes, but now I just drive a little farther and go to Home Depot, who still honors my military discount, and pledge to NEVER spend another dime at Lowe’s. It may well be that what happened to me is just the beginning of Lowe’s turning its back on its military related customers, and there are ALOT of us. If you still have your military discount, DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! If you can shop ANYWHERE but Lowe’s, do so!
Chris Smith
You’re wasting your time driving to HD. They have made the same changes to their military discount program and according to what commenters are posting above, they also added a $400 annual cap to the few items you can still get discounted. So essentially HD’s changes are more extreme than Lowe’s. Both are garbage that aim to essentially kil off the military discount.
Jim
So people or business’s are garbage if they don’t give you something for a discount?
Lecia Marshner
We have spent over 14k at lowes since Nov 2021. We drive almost an hour to get to Lowes. That Discount helped us with our gas so we could shop at this store. Military did not pick and choose who they fought for or who they saved. Discount should be applied to everything.
Daryl Marino
Its sad that its always the veterans that get slammed…the original owner started the discount in honor and respect for the men and woman who served. Its time to shop other places to save a buck..I remember even sale and discount items received the military discount. Now CEO want more money while the rest struggle to make ends meet..I can’t even finished building my home cause as a retired vet I don’t make CEO pay ..freakish creedy arrogant a–holes..sorry it just makes me mad how vets get spit on by selfish creedy people.
JSP
yes purchased lumber on 6/25/2022 not tax free, am a 100% disabled veteran so what they said above is in effect, also both tax free and military discounts are gone from furniture row, mathis brothers, matress firm and others, will find a lumber yard to buy might work. 24 years and this discount really helps a lot. Also Home Depot as this is spreading that is what we get for sacrificing our lives and the health problems we develop. This is in Oklahoma.
Jeff Blackburn
Veterans that made it possible for Lowes to be open should get a discount on appliances. Just greedy of Lowes no to give it. Get rich off the backs of people who defended this great country!
Jay
Looks like I won’t be doing home improvements anymore. The abuse of the 10% has screwed all the veterans. Why didnt they just say no more 10% for the pro customers instead of ruining it for everyone. I am looking for a new store. I found a lumbar yard that gives military discount and I won’t be paying money to lowes or Home Depot anymore. I fought for this country and I have seen this before. Before long, no discounts because capitalism rules the world. I will go back to ace they are friendlier anyways.
TMQ
Yeah but ACE also doesn’t give the discount on lumber or building supplies because they don’t even have them.
Island Marine
I thought these guys were all about the veteran certainly losing mine and a lot of buisness
James
That’s strange, I still get 10% off 95% of what I buy at Lowe’s.
Mike
Lowes is still a thing? Been inside a lowes maybe once in the last 2 years and it was an awful experience with customer support.
Lee
agree. Lowes CS is the worst of all big box hardware stores.
Military Man
All they hire is convenience store type employees that know nothing about hardware of any kind.
G.I. Joe
I beg to differ with you sir. I am a Lowe’s employee, a veteran, and a highly skilled tradesman.
DaveM
Good for you however the majority aren’t!
Mr. Certainly
Full agreement. Every time I order something online with Lowes, it’s a coin toss if I actually get it. They pull from in-store stock, and so many times I get a notification a week or two later “sorry, it’s out of stock.”
I walk in the store, find it on the shelf, and buy it. It’s like they didn’t even bother trying. Staples is the same way. Or I get told “check our online store, but that may have different prices than in-store because we’re two separate entities.” Oh please. If I HAVE to go online, I’m going to price compare and I guarantee you that y’all aren’t competitive. You really don’t want me to do that, right?
These 90s-era companies are really showing they just don’t care, and they’ll soon be with their friends Sears, Kmart, CircuitCity, Frys, etc in the big box store in the sky.
Jim Felt
Seems that way for sure. But it ain’t the future yet.
Something Doc or Marty might have said…
Jn
Really let’s be real Lowes and home depot our cutting back on people who know how to work the system and you know who you are both returns system are almost the same
fred
Lowes is way down on my list of preferred places to shop – and the staff at my local store also seem rather indifferent. All that said, Lowes financial statements paint a very different picture – with sales/profits and EPS all seeming increasing year over year.
https://corporate.lowes.com/newsroom/press-releases/lowes-reports-fourth-quarter-2021-sales-and-earnings-results-02-23-22
Jim Felt
That seems all so disconnected from our collective Toolguyd local store experiences. Are “we” that much more sensitive to lousy customer service then the “average” Lowes customer? Or more about the disconnect between a thoughtful buyer and random impulse buying?
Obviously Lowes knows “better” then I about their target buyer.
Lee
Lowe’s gave me such a hard time registering for the ability , to get my discount [40 minutes or more ] so I just go to home depot, and spend my money ,
Mark
Tried to give HD my business. Ordered an outdoor patio set. Loveseat, two chairs and a table. Came with two seat covers for the loveseat, none for the chairs. Documentation and CS said they are sometimes shipped separately and wait 3 business days. Did not show up. HD’s solution: return the entire set and reorder. They don’t send out the covers separately. Just returned it and getting a set from Wayfair-not taking chances it’ll happen again. Beyond ridiculous-HD won’t be in business long if they keep up this practice.
When I moved to SC last year, Lowe’s extended my hold on an appliance order due to construction delays-super CS. HD would not hold for more than 2 weeks. Will use Lowe’s every time.
Seabee
Depot is also changing their policy on veteran discounts, you will now have to give them a copy of your DD214 and a picture ID in order to get a discount.
Terry Rodd
I quit doing business at Lowe’s because their help runs from you if you need assistance. They do not answer their phones. Most employees don’t know their job.
I switched to Home Depot a few months back, competition is good!
Jim Felt
Exactly my observation in several of my local Lowes.
Maybe I just prefer the HD carried brands and their main manufacturer’s reps HD seems to have on hand so frequently.
Matt the Hoople
I started using Lowe’s almost exclusively several years ago because they had the military discount and seemed better run that Home Depot at the time.
My how the tides have turned. The only reason I still go to Lowe’s is the discount. Home Depot has recently made improvements to their military discount policy and seem to be the better run stores now. I likely will stop using Lowe’s almost entirely. I have one more load LP smart side I need to pick up this weekend just in case they decide to to end the discount next week.
Brad
HD already doesn’t give a discount on the items that Lowe’s is going to stop discounting. I’ve never gotten the discount on building materials or lumber from Lowe’s.
That said, HD and Lowe’s are great places to get lumber, if you love crappy lumber.
Jim Felt
That’s what locally owned yards are for. CVG etc. etc.
Not mega marts.
Matt the Hoople
Agreed. Started driving 45 minutes south and pay a bit more but the lumber is way better. Best part is it’s all under roof and drive through so you drive up to the stack of what you need and load right into your vehicle. Actually takes less time than driving 15 minutes and sorting through garbage at Lowe’s depot and having to load twice. Once on a cart and then once into the vehicle.
Steve
Thats kind of the way I feel too.
HD has done a better job in the military discount program but both companies are hurting for better customer service and just don’t get it.
There are several other smaller hardware stores that offer better custom service regardless if they don’t offer a military discount.
john Vogt
Every Store has it’s own problems For employees sake , I can say as 30+ year vet in retail stores like this one, management of Corporate policies on a individual store bases and trying help customers that come for our help is taken seriously as personal pride by most hard working employees
Kristine
My local Lowe’s is better then H.D. I’m a female I don’t know to much about items that I need and I always got help there. It seems HD hiring college kids and they constantly replace them.
djespo
There steadily replacing good employees with lazy good for nothing monkeys. Ask at my Lowe’s for a soldering iron and the response is “a soup and who”. Most of the new hires spend there time on break and no one knows how to unlock the big stepladder to get stuff of the top shelf.
Joe
Ask how much they pay. It’s no coincidence that hardware stores are full of highschool kids. Everyone is going to have a different story, but I love the Lowe’s in my area for its superb cleanliness and organization. Yes, checkout has been usually limited to one or two registers, but they now added self-checkout.
bwh
im going to enjoy watching people try to schedule returns for appliances within 48hrs of finding out they got a dented washer.
Robert
I don’t know if “enjoy” is the right term. I assume you are being tongue in cheek. 48 hours isn’t enough to know if it’s really what you thought. We upgraded a dishwasher through another retail store, only after a few weeks did we realize we didn’t like the way it held plates, bowls, and utensils. This would totally rule out Lowes for appliances for us. Probably others if they know, and Lowes devotes a lot of square feet to appliances.
Hutch
Not to mention the wait time. ..4 months for a dishwasher.
Jim Felt
That’s the current world of nearly post COVID supply chain issues for everyone.
bwh
i ordered a dishwasher from lowes, and it arrived with a crack in the case. The welded joint under the insulation had a massive dent in it (though the box was fine?).
So we didn’t know it was leaking until installed and running…. fortunately I tested it before pushing back under the counter, but still made a decent mess.
In this case, I would been required to install and test within 48hrs… it is going to be a nightmare for people to find out they can’t return thousands in purchases when broken or damaged simply because they didn’t do it within that narrow window.
i’m sure some evil finance guy is rubbing his hands together knowing it will mean fewer returns, despite more stress on employees.
Mike Force
They just created their own nightmare, not mention the surge of business they’ll create for HD.
Fish_Stick
Not a veteran but my father is. Both Lowe’s and HD have become more and more unfriendly with the military discount. Instead of being able to show an ID you now have to register with some other company that “verifies” the information and then you have to punch that info in the store. I guess the ID card that gets you into an actual military installation isn’t good enough for these retailers and they need 3rd party verification to protect this. Funny enough in store transactions still require a valid photo ID to process. So what’s the point? Are they losing a significant amount through fake military ids? Considering how long they look / glance at the id how could they even check this? Pretty sure more walks out the door each year and ends up on another auction site then making vets go through the hassle of this.
For online orders I understand something different needs to be done to verify instead of a check box but in store the card should be more than enough.
Fm2176
I agree to an extent about how ID should be enough, but the military installations I go on all now scan IDs, making it difficult to bluff your way in post.
Unfortunately, phonies and has-beens know how to game a system, and a military or veterans ID isn’t too hard to fake. A few years ago I noticed pictures of accepted IDs for military discounts at Lowe’s, and over ten years ago I helped expose a phony panhandler in Baton Rouge. Her schtick was approaching strangers, claiming she’d locked her keys in her car and needed money for a locksmith. She was “in the Army” and showed her issued ID…problem was it was obviously old and the design had changed slightly. I wouldn’t be surprised if she used the same ID for military discounts.
Fish_Stick
Makes sense, been a long time since I’ve had a military ID – 21 or 23, can’t remember the age that cuts off for dependents.
That’s true, they always ruin it but I guess part of the rub comes in that we’re talking 10% off, not like a massive 30 or 40% discount here. Sure it adds up if you’re a big customer but I’d imagine it would be the smaller couple of times a year folks abusing it. I’d imagine if you’re a pro, you probably get a better discount anyway and the risk of a fraudulent federal id, stolen valor and a fraud lawsuit from the store would deter a lot. People are desperate for money but are you reselling the items you saved a mere 10% on? I just wouldn’t see the profit in that and how many people would buy something from a guy in the parking lot for a few dollars less, no receipt, no warranty and no returns? Family and friends only need so much too before you would have to broaden the market for real money. I have a HD cc and I get a 10% discount a few times a year. Any business that offers a discount has that factored into the margin.
HD already has the military discount capped at $400 per year which is like one powertool combo kit that walks out the door frequently. Investors are probably the ones that ruin this more than anything else.
It’s a family site so I won’t say what’s on my mind about the stolen valor folks, but yeah…
Jim Felt
With the economic withering of the lower middle class this trend won’t end soon or well. (Sorry Stuart).
Joseph m staudenraus
Lowes has gotten so bad that I switched to Home Depot only for my purchases. Too many problems at the Columbus Georgia Lowes to list all of them. Tried buying a $450.00 table saw. They never got it down from the 25 foot racks, one hour later, still no saw. When I asked the responsible lumber associate about it, he said go get it by the saws. But, there were none on the ground. He then said, ” no one told me “….went directly to Home Depot and picked up a better table saw by Dewalt. HD customer service took $50.00 off of the price and was back in my truck with the saw in 15 minutes. Enormously better than Lowes.
Fm2176
I’ll address one thing for now: Sears (RIP for the most part) offered 40% off on their tools around Memorial Day 2015 or so (might be off by a year). I picked up my first new Estwing hammer and Knipex pliers wrench in Albany, GA for about $50 total. Can’t imagine how many phonies or resellers stocked up on tools back then.
Steve
The verification systems are a huge pita if you qualify but don’t appear in their system due to unusual circumstances. I have been able to get the CS manager at both Lowes and HD to put an override in their system.
Joe
They caught a guy at my nearest HD that had “borrowed” about $70k in stolen power tools. Maybe half that was recovered. Maybe they need some Vets working security.
Jacob Jones
As a veteran I don’t mind it. 1) It makes it easier to get that discount online which before you couldn’t to. 2) Considering most Home Depots and Lowe’s are made up of self checkouts, I no longer have to wave the cashier down, wait for them to verify, input the discount, and then I can complete my transaction.
TAM
The policy is being abused. Discount is for the veteran and spouse NOT the entire family and friends and the discount is to be used for personal use items only not for a business. People abuse the policy it gets changed. Simple as that.
Fyrfytr998
The military discount is what has kept me loyal to Lowes. If they start getting nit picky with it now, I can just as easily go up the street to Home Depot.
Scudnik
.mil discount goes away, I go away
Jay Bell
Exactly. Fu-k Lowe’s.
Darlene
I also can take my business to Home Depot.
Sherry
That’s what my husband told them! He said unload my truck and give me my $795 back I’ll go to Home Depot
Fm2176
My wife told me about this. Lowe’s has gradually pulled back on the military and other discounts for at least a year now. Clearance and sale items usually have a “minimum retail price applied to this item” statement on the receipt, meaning that no additional discount can be applied.
Frank D
Have to love the Lowe’s bashing when the same thing applies to HD as far as exclusions and returns (chainsaws, generators, etc). It all depends what area you live in and personal preference, maybe. Plenty of cases Lowe’s has been head and shoulders above HD, in my experience, I shop at both, and they remain my preferred store. The credit card discount perk ( which HD took away many years ago ) combined with cleaner and larger stores, and friendlier staff, makes a difference to me.
As far as discounts? Is this actually new? There have been exclusions. If not it was to be expected. Price match doesn’t apply to such market price goods either.
Appliance return limited to 48 hrs? I don’t think that can hold water. So many deliveries are made for an install days and weeks later, because they depend on remodeling and / or third party installers.
MM
My town has 2 lowes and 1 HD. I normally shop at one of the Lowes because it’s location is much more convenient for me, though I used to shop at the HD more often before I moved. In my experience it’s “6 of one, half a dozen of the other”. I can tell you horrid customer service examples from both stores, and I can tell you great customer service examples from both. Both have staffing problems. It’s not too hard to find an employee at HD but they’re nearly always clueless and often rude. Lowes has the problem of trying to find an employee, and they’re nearly always clueless. I can’t say I’ve ever encountered a rude Lowe’s employee though.
Jim Felt
Glad to hear of your positive experiences. Simply not mine in several west coast markets.
Mike
The last time we had to return an appliance back to Lowe’s , it took them almost two weeks to pick it up . Running 2 businesses and did a good amount of volume with Lowe’s . Using their credit card , and also earning a volume discount.
When the volume discount stopped, so did most of the business with Lowe’s .
They Fail to understand that a contractor can purchase more then 20-25 consumers purchasing one or two items.
I moved on to the other box store and no regrets.
Jim Felt
I’ve never once bought any major appliance from a national chain. Maybe I’m the outlier but I’ve always tried to support local vendors. And prices are nearly always comparable. But the service! Whoa. No comparison.
fred
My thoughts as well. Bought my first house in the 1960’s and have bought from the same local chain of appliance stores ever since. They just seem to care more – do OK on prices – but are way more accommodating. I’m sad that their territory does not extend to cover my other domiciles. In Florida we were flabbergasted at the take-it-or-leave-it attitude we encountered at one national chain and had a tough time finding a a smaller local dealer.
Brad
The local appliance stores are the only ones that seem to carry high-end appliances here. No Miele, Wolf, or Electrolux at HD or Lowe’s, for better or worse.
Typically I’ve gone there, pay just under sticker, but get them to throw in free delivery/installation. Costs a little more than an LG or Samsung at the box stores, but at least I can be confident in the installation, handling, and contribution to the local economy.
Sue Ancog
For a long time now Lowe’s has had very poor customer service at most if not all their stores
Sherry
We always hunt for someone always have!
Rob
Well that just makes things super easy for me. I USED to give them all of my business. I’ll just be shopping at Home Depot now.
Brad
Why? These exclusions already exist at HD.
Mary
My sister and I have ALWAYS said, ” No Pros at Lowe’s”. I have yet to find anyone, in any Lowe’s that could actually answer a question. In fact we have taught, as a customer, other customers right in front of the employees.
AB
Lowe’s hires mostly teens and early-mid 20’s. There is no possible way to get people with years of expertise in a particular field being that young. I’m 27 working in Millwork, I’ve never installed or been to an install of a single door, storm door, window, nothing at all. Yet I’m expected to know the ins and outs of any install within my department at least. It’s not my job to (off the clock) reach out to installers and tag along to learn every step.
And God forbid that I do it on the clock and no one is covering the department, then customers will really start whining.
Lowe’s is setting customers up for disappointment. I sell installations and window install consultations, beyond that, I know what I know, and don’t know what I don’t.
It’s not that anyone is trying to neglect customers in store or that anyone is too lazy to explain how things work. We just don’t know because how could we?
Bob
Like most Chinese co.why should thay thank military follow the money, we still have a southerlands.and an ace with lumber. Like walmart, now in Chinese ownership get people coming then stick it to them. Retired navy
Stuart
Lowe’s is an American company.
fred
Walmart and Lowes are publicly traded companies – both based in the US and both having their stock listed on the NYSE.
My personal holdings with Vanguard – provide me some (miniscule) ownership of both companies – as Vanguard owns a little over 8% of Lowes outstanding shares and over 4% of Walmart – making Vanguard one of the top owners of both companies.
I also thought that Walton Enterprises and the Walton Family -were still the lions-share owners of Walmart stock.
CdrW
It is still nice when an associate at either store would thank you for your service. I purchase from both upgraded my entire kitchen with Lowes and appliances at HD still got both with discounts. I’m going to go where I can get the best deal. Dropping a military discount usually means going elsewhere. Lowes near me hires a lot of veterans and they provide a lot of great advice. Would be a shame to drop military discounts and too far from any bases for most folks.
Moreover, I’m usually pretty nice about commenting about my purchases made at Lowes…
Andy
So one of my larger income streams comes from retail consulting. And this may piss people off, but the veteran demographic really isn’t a key component to any business. I appreciate veterans as much as the next guy, but most people who served don’t think of themselves as veterans. They did their years, and moved on with their lives. It really doesn’t pay for companies to target them with discounts and promos.
Now, the stupid appliance policy may bite Lowes in the ass. Personally, when I have an issue with a product, I go right to the manufacturer, but I’m an outlier in that regard.
AJ
I guess I will start going to Ace Hardware store and McCoy’s from now on. I rather support small businesses then the already rich and greedy.
Mike Force
Let’s not forget, America and it’s Veterans have been at war for twenty years. Limbs lost, lives lost and minds lost, and many of those Veterans did multiple tours, some who lost a limb, healed up and went back. This also includes the Vietnam Veteran, who in most cases was drafted and did what was asked of them, so I think it’s important, even if it’s a small percentage.
Mark
Two thumbs up!
Edward
If true, I am on my way to Home Depot!!
Xsquid
Home depot disallows the same things AND they just started limiting veterans to 400.00 per year.
So you are on your way to less.
Pam Hanson
HD has just screwed up a steel ball. The hassle they have created to get registered for the discount makes it not even worth it!! I most likely will not frequent their store any more. I’m a retired Army officer. It’s a no brainer!!
Pam Hanson
My military ID is good enough to get me on an airplane but it’s not good enough for a 10% discount at HD. Bye, bye!!
John
HD already stopped military discount on lumber
Jason C.
I will say, an Ace Hardware store with 4 employees standing at the wait, one of them call you by name, and expert advice, just outshines ANY box store. It is worth the 10-20% more you pay every single time.
Then they closed that store.
Doesn’t matter though. Customer Service and the Art of Hospitality have just completely disappeared. It is very disappointing to see what a turn things have taken over the last few years.
James Davis
I am not a veteran, but I have a deep respect for our servicemen and women. I have never had a problem with a single Lowes. However, I do use Milwaukee M12, which takes me to Home Depot on occasion. I find HD to be dusty and staffed by indifferent associates. I also have Flex and Craftsman V20 tools, so I frequent Lowes with the wife. We both love the shiny stores, and usually get stellar service. We both find Lowe’s to be a superior store as home owners. From hardware to blinds, we are usually very pleased. While I respect the opinions here, I am almost tickled, and usually baffled by the anti-Lowes talk that permeates the threads on this site. As a non-pro, I could be an outlier.
Sue Ancog
Fine!
fred
It may well depend on your locale or local store management.
I have 2 Home Depots near me. One is 2.7 miles away. the other 3.5 miles.
The nearest Lowes is 3.2 miles away. Of the 3 I prefer to shop at the HD that is 3.5 miles away. It’s just cleaner, bigger, and more helpful than the other one. The staff/management also seem to keep stock better organized at the larger store – while the smaller store seems to always have many items out of place or lying about. When I order online for store pickup, however, I use the smaller store – as their customer service folks and order storage/lockers are much better than at the larger store.
I can also say that the nearest Lowes is brighter and cleaner than either Home Depot – but the staff don’t seem to have a clue about customer service (if you can even find someone for help.) The return and online order pickup process at this store has also been abysmal – the few times that I have needed to use either one.
Frank D
Same here. This pro-sumer and go to DIY guy among family and friends completely agrees with you. The anti L, pro HD sentiment is absolutely baffling … considering HD has not had credit card discounts for at least 5 years now, similar product restrictions, tightened Military ID discount qualifiers (can’t just flash something anymore either), dirty cluttered stores, no ring an associate buttons, …
John
Both have changed their military discount. I do shop both stores. Have been in both from east to west coast. Home Depot does not seem as clean as Lowes, but from all my travels Home Depot by far has the most knowledgeable staff. Not says some of Lowes staff isn’t helpful or friendly. Hard to find anybody to help in either store chain now, but Home Depot wins in customer most of the time. Just my take.
Chuck
Now they are taking away the 10% military discount, what is next, removing the military veterans reserve parking spots too. Guess I will have to start going to home depot more, at least you can get a little help there.
Brad
Again, they’re not taking away anything that HD hasn’t already taken away.
TAM
They are not taking away the military discount on all items just certain items in lumber, electrical, etc.
Randie
Lowes is the way to shop.. No brainer. We are ALL feeling the pinch
Bobby
Menards just brought back their 11% off EVERYTHING rebate. Shame on lowes for taking discounts from vets. I don’t need to shop at lowes anymore.
Rob H
I wonder if the exclusions point to them trying to keep some sort of profit margin on those items? I don’t know anything about the base cost of lumber vs markup but I do know several local businesses that operate on such tight profit margins right now that they have to choose whether to offer a discount and make no profit on things or not offer a discount and afford to stay in business.
I live in a military town so discounts are common at places like restaurants, but the Lowes discount was rife for abuse when they used the phone number system. I have been standing with friends when they got a phone call from Lowes asking if they approved a purchase on their behalf. It was usually a family member in another state claiming the discount. Then my friends are in a tough place because it is family…
All that said, Lowes and Home Depot are across the street from each other here. I can walk in Lowes and encounter exactly 1 employee (the cashier) the entire time I’m in there. At Home Depot I’ll have to tell 4 people good and don’t need assistance. Or if I do need help they almost always walk with me to find the thing I’m looking for.
Teresa Boone
If I can’t get my military discount on lumber
I Might as well go to discount builders.
All ready can’t get discount on sale items.
Huh
Here’s an idea, why don’t lowes discontinue their 10% employee discount? Every employee gets a discount card to use on every product in the store even if it’s marked down….only give a 10% discount to veterans..why does a temp employee ( by temp I mean it’s a revolving door at lowes most employees stay less than a year) a small percentage are veterans , the ones that have never served in an armed force get a discount and people that fought for our country get screwed? I say shut down employee discounts and give to vets……
Mike Force
It certainly looks that way. If these changes prove to be true, I’ll be taking my business elsewhere
Kemmery Kendrick
I cannot blame the company for taking these steps. Some people go overboard with blessings from God.
I appreciate the discount. I only use it for my home the V.A. helped me aquire for my 22 year service to this country.
Please let the people who own Lowes know that they are truly appreciated for what they give to us vets who just need a little help now and then.
God continue to bless and grow your business for helping the little guy and gal like me.
joeg16
Well there current CEO ran JCPenny into the ditch before getting this job. We know where this is headed.
Thad Noble
I realize there are ID scammers and perhaps a few valid Veterans who are flaunting the rules on items purchased for “Personal” use…..BUT…that being said, a individual Veteran, using their 10% discount to buy a new faucet for their home bathroom is certainly recognizable from a individual buying a entire case of faucets for his home bathroom.
That being said, ALL these retailers who offer Military Discounts, can verify who is the real deal and who is not. A Drivers License, with photo ID, matched against the Military ID being presented would eliminate 95% of these scammers right away.
Now…..stores can use present technology to photo every transaction and fraudulently using a military ID ( VA disability cards included) is a felony and using this ID to purchase products is fraud, at the felony level, because it entails using a Federal ID to commit the fraud.
These merchants have the tools to put a HUGE dent in the military discount fraud but don’t want to put forth the extra effort. This causes innocent Veterans, who have put their lives on the line for all of us, to bear the brunt of a few unscrupulous ones who the Merchants could catch if they wanted to.
Seriously, how much is Lowes losing by giving me 10% off a package of 4 lightbulbs or a couple of
2 X4’s.
Jim
At my Lowe’s store in Southern California I just have my “My Lowe’s” card scanned at check out, no other ID required. To me 10% isn’t that big a deal since all it’s doing is eliminating the sales tax. I never look at the price on the shelf and take off 10% in my head. But in the past when buying open garden rock bags and receiving 80% off and then at checkout receiving another 10% off, Loading my car with 30 bags and thinking, hey not too bad for $35.
MFC
Lowes is probably hoping that not too many people read this comment section.
Vince
Lowe’s was my go to store now it looks like I will be giving my business to Home Depot. Doing away with the veterans discount was not a good business decision. Lowe’s is on it’s way to failure.
Brad
They’re not doing away with the veterans’ discount.
Steve
No big deal, I’ll just drive a mile further and take advantage of Menards 11% discounts
Ken
It’s true when I go to Lowe’s can never find any associate to help me when I do find somebody they send me in the wrong direction the other thing that’s annoying that when they have an empty space on the shelf they stick another product in there and you think you’re getting it for the sticker price you get to the self checkout and find out it’s not the price you seen on the sticker ridiculous
John
Heyo. This has to be fake for those people who see this post. I work at 2969 lowes and I have yet to hear anything bout these changes. Could be wrong idk cuz we already don’t take military when an item is discounted. So this doesn’t sound like out of the ball park.
Stuart
As the changes aren’t set to be implemented until next week, it’s possible not all store managers shared it with their teams yet.
Lowe’s still hasn’t responded yet, and so there’s no official confirmation one way or the other.
Calvin Ballew
Same here bro. Rediculious
This Handyman Can
I’ve been a contractor for 20 years. Buy from all 3 big box stores regularly.
– Menards has never offered a military discount
– Home Depot has had their restrictions on Lumber, electrical, plumbing, etc for a few years now
-Lowes is only doing what Home Depot did years ago
Seems fair to me
I’m sure some products can be purchased cheaper than others
Ray
When you say “no politics” you are showing your support for a side. Shame, let the discussion go where it will.
On another note, every time I use the Vet discount it sort of makes up for when I was called a baby killer and spit at in uniform at SFO.
George J. Crowell
*I like and shop my local Lowes BUT some other Lowes that I have shopped at have been reluctant to apply the Veterans Discount. I have even been asked to show a PICTURED ID when I had proof of ID but was asked to go out to my car to prove what was in Lowes computer. Maybe
its because of a lack of training of their cashiers/staff by management for the Veterans Discount. I have heard Rumors (which I would not spread) that an older store in nearby NY that I used had questionable requests by customers who could not prove their eligibility to be valid VET , that some non vet employees as well as customers resented the discount .
*BUT I can assure you as a retired Vet Lowes support is very appreciated and favored by Vet customers for shopping at Lowes.
That said Ask HOME DEPOT?
Garry
I live in Osage Beach Missouri and we have a Menards, a Lowes and a Home Depot all withing a 2 minute drive of each other. I have been a dedicated Lowes customer Mainly due to the Veteran Discount. I will be rethinking that if that benefit goes away. I may be just one person but I spend about 4 grand a year there. This year alone I have several big projects lined up amounting to about $25K.
Ed
I am proud to have served my country and appreciate any discount that a company might offer me but I certainly don’t expect to get one. I shop at both Lowe’s and Home Depot depending on what items I am looking for and if neither offered a discount it wouldn’t really change my shopping.
Ted
Take it from a former employee they don’t give a shit about veterans. The 2nd thing about the appliances again from a former employee who sold appliances the reason for the 48 hour return policy is because they damage so many products they are losing their ass on returns…this is a horrid company that treats their employees like slave labor and as much as they tout safety is all just bullshit. Once you get hurt you are ran out of the company as fast as possible.
mattd
This is basically the same as homedepot’s appliance policy, and as for the veterans discount, HomeDepot just rolled out a program that makes it so you have to register your veteran status with your homedepot accountin order to get any military discount, and it is limited to like $400/year in total discounts, and you have to have a smart phone to pull up a temporary qr code to scan at the register in order for the discount to be applied. and if you have a pro-extra account attached then you are not eligible for that discount at all because the veterans discount is for private use only and they assume every purchase you make on that is for a customer.
Terri
I gave up shopping at Lowe’s when they insisted that my roommate wear camouflage vest with a sticker on it that I am a veteran some veterans might like that but the last thing he wanted to do while he was at work was talk about what he did and what he saw with the war. He’s just trying to live his life with a severe PTSD he finally ended up leaving
Tom
Just another slap in the face to us veterans. I really enjoyed going to Lowes which is 30 miles further than the closest Home Depot (35 miles). All because of the military discount. Thank you Lowes. I’m sure that you will miss some of those big profits more than you miss the veterans.
Ryan H
Well, considering I can get lumber and electrical at either store, and there isn’t much difference in quality (if you pick through the piles), then we’ll just have to see what the market forces do to this. I didn’t realize Home Depot changed the military discount on lumber, maybe my store was just dumb, but I always got the discount.
I would actually prefer if both Home Depot and Lowes would fix their shipping and websites. Lowes in particular is horrible at shipping dates, and when I call customer “support” I get told “It’s a third party shipper, we can’t help you.” As much as I don’t like to use Amazon, if I call Amazon about a shipment, the person on chat typically gets a solution the first time. That means I don’t waste an hour or two on the phone with Lowes, and sometimes, that is worth a fifty or one hundred dollar difference.
And as a veteran, I’d ask the other people flipping out on non-veterans questioning the discount to chill out. Yeah, its hard to describe to someone in words and pictures what it means to be shot at in a war zone, or spend a considerable amount of time underway in a small metal tube known as a submarine (I’ve done both of these things). But that’s not an excuse to shove it in people’s faces. Let people question whether a store should or should not give a military discount. That’s part of the freedoms we swore to protect. Sometimes that freedom means hearing something we don’t like to hear.
Joe
If lowes is going to limit what I can use my military discount on I will buy those items some where else. Taking discounts away from those who served is un American. Disabled Veterans are on a fixed income and to take away there military discount is wrong. Lowes is just greedy. Lowes is not the only home improvement store. There are others that will gladly welcome my business and still honor the military discount. Once this starts they will continue to add more products to the restricted list. Sooner or later Lowes will do away with the Military discount.
Coach James
Joe, I have spent my entire life living on or beside army bases. I know and have worked with thousands of disabled vets, and almost none were on fixed incomes unless they were 60 years + and fully retired or confined to a VA hospital. Almost all of them had jobs ranging from lower hourly wages to well into 6 figures.
Jerry
Try working for Lowes! The absolute worst company to work for. They look for excuses to fire someone in order to replace with part time cheaper wages.
Andy
Hate to tell you, but that’s every major retailer, and has been for almost 20 years. Most of my clients are retailers, and seriously, the only way to make a living in retail is to invest in it. Working there, even as a part time gig, will always be a tough wsy to make a living.
Michael Alphonso
In the New Orleans area, the taxes are at 8.75% if LOWE’S and other companies want to help VETERANS then it’s time to give us, the veterans, more of a DISCOUNT. When you add it up we veterans in New Orleans area are only saving 1.25% on purchases. With inflation and increases in taxes we need 20% off now not 1.25%.
Andy
I haven’t seen the numbers, but I really doubt HD of Lowes are running over 18% margin. 20% would put them under water. And really, they’re probably closer to 12-15%.
fred
In addition, with respect to sales tax – all legitimate retailers – are just tax collectors. They collect it on sales but have to hand it over to the State/County/Municipality.
In our plumbing and remodeling businesses – we tried to stay on the up and up with regard to sales tax. If a job was truly a capital improvement – we and the customer would fill out the paperwork. But if it was clearly just maintenance work – then we would collect and pass on sales tax. We had many customers ask if they could avoid paying tax by paying with cash. Our salespersons/customer reps would explain that we did not do business that way – preferring to be paid by check made out to the business or by credit card. We could make a financing option available – but if asked we’d suggest that the customer shop around to see if better terms might be available elsewhere. If that lost us some business – so be it.
There were indeed many “contractors” in our area that reportedly worked on a cash only basis. Some of those may well have been the folks one might see picking up day labor at the local “shape-up” spots – compared to our having mostly longtime employees on payroll.
Anselmo (Robert) Sarabia
I work at Lowes, and believe me it sucks.
Getting ready to give my notice of separation.
They give Bonuses and cut back hours to get it all back.
Fuck Lowe’s.
MikeK
This is not about lowes or HD but I found a great deal awhile back.
My printer shot caps and I needed another. Went to office depot to buy a new one.
Asked the associate if they have military discount. Yes she said, 20%.
So that was awesome on my$300 purchase.
Wish we could get that for tools and appliances.
Bud
It’s out of respect that we are given a 10% discount, we serve red to protect our country and if a store is wanting to show that to a Veteran then they should not have to explain there to Veterans. Most the time I pass on it because its not a magior purches. If your not a Veteran and and you never servered then be glad that you can afford the liberty to be buying with that freedom that that Veteran served so you can have that right.
Roger Nelson
As per the article: “As you might be aware, Lowe’s recently launched a new PRO Rewards Program. If these rumored changes are indeed scheduled to go into effect next week, could it have somehow been prompted by Lowe’s “MVPs” program?”…Seems Lowes is attempting to be “too clever by half” by directly negatively affecting veterans who participate in the company’s military discount program. Military discounts being no longer available for purchases of appliances, dimensional lumber and a host of other “selected” items is a direct result of the enacting of the new Pro’s Rewards Program. Hey Lowes, rob Peter to pay Paul …much?
KayBar
Let me get this straight, no more military discounts for lumber, appliances and electrical supplies? Well, Home Depot still offers them, tearing up my Lowe’s card as we speak, good riddance…….
Xsquid
Lowed is still better than home depot. Home depot exclusions:
What items are excluded from The Home Depot Military Discount?
The Home Depot Military Discount cannot be applied to select items, services and fees, including, but not limited to, some commodity products (including lumber, wire, building materials), value priced merchandise, appliances, tool rental fees, labor items, gift cards and services including freight and delivery.
Plus home depot now has a 400 a year limit.
The Home Depot Military Discount can only be used on eligible purchases within the $400 maximum annual discount.
https://www.homedepot.com/c/military#DiscountFAQs
Kenny
The veterans discount has made me want to shop at Lowes over Home Depot. Electrical supplies and lumber are the things I purchase the most at Lowes. Looks like I will be shopping elsewhere. Other places have better service and quality.
Leonard Neff
Over the years I have spent a couple of hundred thousand of dollars at Lowes because of they way they treat Veterans. As I Veteran I strive to do business with businesses who tend to treat Veterans better than other business do. It has come to my attention that Lowes is now planning to discontinue their Veteran’s discount. IF this happens, I will totally end doing my business with Lowes and I will urge every Veteran in America to do the same.
And if this happens just think of the Millions of Veterans that shop at Lowes who will be no longer doing business at Lowes.
Gary
Lowes’ lumber is nothing to get excited about. However I am saddened by this negative change in military discount policy. I used to be a loyal customer but that has just changed.
Steve
It’s not a rumor. I got the receipt to prove it. Lowe’s only offers military discount to shit like shovels and hammers no military discount for electrical no military discounts for lumber no military discount for appliances so you’re $14 hammer it’s only gonna cost you 1360 or you go to Walmart and get it for 10 bucks Way to alienate your veterans Lowe’s
Mike
On March 8th I purchased $1850 worth of lumber from Lowes to build a deck. The clerk at the Pro desk said that this would be the last day that they offered a military discount on lumber. The $185 discount was nice. i guess it was my lucky day. If I had waited until the 9th to buy the lumber I would have missed the savings. The clerk said he was sad that vets are losing this benefit.
Jim
I have gained a different perspective from reading all of these comments, I believe that a good percentage of the posters on here are over reacting. As a Veteran and believing in the Constitution and Bill of Rights and the freedoms it represents. I believe that Lowe’s or any other company doesn’t owe anyone anything when it comes to discounts. Lowe’s has the right to run their business anyway they want. I didn’t join the military so I could receive discounts when I shop. I joined the military to serve our country and fight for the freedoms that allow Lowe’s to have the freedom to give or not give discounts on what they sell. I don’t expect discounts from the stores I shop in, Who am I to expect a discount for serving my country. Boycotting a store for taking away a discount on some items doesn’t make any sense. Are we going to start boycotting all stores that don’t give military discounts?
IJK
Agreed. Unless a place advertises a military discount, I don’t bother asking about it. While yes, it does factor into my shopping habits when I know about one, or ease of use regarding it, it’s a perk that I don’t expect. Even at some places that offer it, I sometimes avoid using it because of the hassle for everyone (typically at restaurants).
Xsquid
Hear, hear. I consider getting anything at all a plus.
Such whining, and when I got out (after 12, vietnam veteran 100% va rated) veterans discounts were pretty much non existent. In fact we were disliked by many.
Besides that lowes changed their rules to closer match home depot which already doesn’t allow limber, appliances, etc. PLUS has a yearly cap now of 400.00. Lowes doesn’t yet have this.
Most places don’t give any kind of discount at all. By all means, spend your money where you choose, but this “everyone owes us because we volunteered” attitude is sickening. I was drafted and don’t feel that way.
John Squires
Bought 300.00 dollars worth of lumber today. No veterans discount anymore. They took away the one good thing they were doing for us. They never even sent an email telling us. I’ll start going to home depot . No sense going to lowes anymore. Everyone loves to piss on the veterans . Lowes just wanted to look good. They could careless .
Xsquid
Home depot doesn’t give it for lumber either And has a 400.00 yearly limit.
John Squires
I am aware of this but they are right down the street from me and usually cheaper than lowes
John Squires
I encourage all veterans to just go shop at home depot . That discount really made a difference for me. I’m done with lowes.
Kate
I once ordered some things on the lowes app… I’m afraid to do it again. I got an email from PayPal and only previewed it. I thought the order didn’t go through. My mistake, of course. So when I checked my order and it wasn’t there, I had no reason to believe the email wasn’t about this. So… I reordered.. and added an item lol I realized what I had done not even 30 mins later and canceled the first order. Then as crazy charges started hitting my account not even an hour and a half later I canceled the second order. Both said canceled, and showed that I owed and paid nothing… well, the first order was about 250, and the second was 350ish.. I understand that if some things are picked up and some are shipped that they hold some money, but 1500?!? Yes, I typed that correctly. Fifteen hundred dollars on two orders no more than 600 total canceled within an hour and a half. I had several pending amounts of 19, a few 49 dollar charges, three or 4 350 dollar charges, and AT LEAST 2 250 charges. When I called they wanted to blame PayPal… I don’t think it’s even possible… then the second time they acted like it was no big deal because ‘we didn’t TAKE money out of your account. It’s PENDING.’ I said, well either way my money isn’t available to me, so you need to figure it out! He then blamed my bank… took over two weeks to be released back to me.
Elwood Beauchamp
Last building supplies purchased at Lowe’s
They told me this only AFTER I purchased a load of lumber ( which I promptly returned the next day due to time). And when they told me, only after I asked when I checked the receipt, I didn’t even get a “Thank you for your service”
Henry Marion
We are 7% of the nation
10% is not much to a company that is grosing millions of dollars each year
Not all veterans have a great income and 10% helps with the rising coast of fuel
I drive 27 miles one way and it is the closest place to get many of my supplies
The one’s I really feel bad for are the disabled veteran there income
don’t match there out put for medical so everything helps
They take this time to stop the discount when times are tough while they make millions
So many companies are doing the same as for me I will be avoiding the companies that are doing the same
Vet parking and a thank you for your service is not a bonus for spending out rages prices
But yet small companys are still working with the vet go figure
Some times I can not understand why we fought
Tom
Sorry to hear about the removal of military discounts to veterans.
95% of my shopping at Lowes. Its a shame that military veterans have to
to sacrifice for the cause of shoring up profits.
Bob
With all the crying you vets do it’s no wonder we haven’t won a war since the 1940s.
Tom
Hey there Bob. Undoubtedly you live in a bubble in another universe. Just what in the world were we doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Really now, just tell all of the families that lost a member of their family during the past 30 years or for that matter the past 70 years what exactly happened then. Have you no respect for those lives lost defending some individuals such as ones that think like yourself that all of that was in vain
Quite surprised that myself, a Marine Corps Veteran, has maintained self control and not just thoroughly cussed like a sailor during this response to an ungrateful person such as yourself. Enjoy the freedom that you have because of those service men and women who paid the ultimate price for your freedom. Thank you sir and have a lovely day.
Shane
I can’t believe the audacity of your comment. It’s either an intentional gaslighting or you’re an absolute moron.
Shane
As an Army vet, it’s hard to hold back telling you what I really think, but it wouldn’t be appropriate for this forum and I doubt you’d have the guts to say it out loud in any other arena so why waste time on a coward like you Bob?
DCL
Hey Bob, what wars have we not won since WWII? Are you referring to Vietnam (I was there) where we never lost a battle? I’m so tired of hearing from you Monday morning generals who can so cavalierly dismiss the valiant efforts of veterans, and especially the vets who gave it all. I don’t always like the way our troops are used, but put the blame where it belongs and that is with our useless politicians!
Jesse
Just bought 160 dollars worth of plants and gave my military # but the discount was not allowed or not working, cashier tried 4 times still nothing….had to pay full price and wait in line at help desk for over half an hour to finally get my 16 bucks back.
Bud
What a ruse or ploy. I’ve encouraged other vets to join Lowes Military Discount Program in an effort to recognize a nationwide business that recognizes vets for their service to their country. Now after so many have become loyal to Lowes they turn their backs on the vets by disallowing two of the most beneficial products (lumber and appliances) from the list of discounted products to vets. Don’t tell me it’s the current economy that’s at fault, their prices have increased exponentially to cover that. It’s actually a marketing venture to encourage all vets and their vet friends to sign on and then cut them off at the knees. Home Depots gain will be Lowes loss!
IJK
Home Depot also doesn’t allow Lumber or major appliances. Home Depot also has a $400 annual limit on the discount. So if anything, all Lowes did was match Home Depot’s policies. Except Lowes doesn’t have an annual cap, so arguably still a better discount. Ironically, Home Depot expanded their military discount to online purchases, just like Lowes has been doing.
David
I shop at Lowe’s in two capacities, as a regular veteran Joe, and as a Pro. customer through my work. I have noticed they are now catering to the Pro. customer and alienating the regular customer through doing away with veterans discount. Throughout the years I have been a loyal customer and had great relationships with the employees. I feel I am the same person shopping there regardless of the hat I am wearing. If they think the Pro. is any different from the regular person, they are making a mistake. I will now take my business elsewhere as a Pro. and as a regular every day customer.
Larry Chandler
I think that Lowe’s and Home Depot met and decided to end their 10% veteran discount on lumber, appliances, electrical, etc. Their new policies took effect at almost the same time. Did these two companies conspire to “price fixing”?
No more 10% discount for those which laid their lives on the line for their country; however, if you use your Lowe’s credit card you get a 5% discount on lumber, etc.
Lowe’s appreciates possible interest income over arms, legs, eyes, blood and stress and all things military has given.
I will be buying more items from their competitors.
Lorenzo Moreno
I got into it years ago with Home Depot about not having the 10% discount at all there stores. I got word back with a lame excuse and then sometime later they did implement the discount. Now they want to do the same thing again. Seems like everytime some new person comes into the corporation that is the first thing they look at. What can we do to make more profits and what can we reduce to get there.
Lorenzo Moreno
I think it is time that the VA community speaks up and either stops buying at Lowes or some how boycott the store. We Veterans always seem to get the short end of the stick. Every business talks about helping Veterans but when it comes to company profit, Who gets the takeaways first? This happened once before When they did away completely with the VA discount, and probably with enough outcry from the Veterans they reinstated the 10% discount across the board. Now here again, they are modifying the plan to just include certain items that get the 10% off. Now that is a bunch of CROCK. I am asking that all Veterans not stand for this.
Jim
As a veteran I didn’t join the military to get a 10% discount at stores or have someone thank me for my service. Actually I think it’s embarrassing to expect a discount at any store just because you served your country. I believe my viewpoint is more popular among veterans than any other in regards of expectations of receiving discounts for serving our country. Just being allowed to serve our country is thanks enough.
David
I agree with you to a point. I also, don’t feel I am entitled to any perks just because I was in the military, I didn’t join for that reason. However, I feel that businesses use the veterans discount to lure people in so they get more business, then when they have gotten the customer base they want they drop it to increase profits. We, as consumers can play the same game, if they no longer offer the discount then there is no need to be a loyal customer. I think too often businesses forget how hard we work for the money we spend and only chase the profits.
dave
Wow. Y’all had a lot of issues with the discount and I haven’t had one yet over the past 2 years. I’ve bought a mower, water heater, fencing, trees, and lots of other things and have received 10% off each time. I noticed that the discount went to 5% when I was buying lumber. Well, I found online gift cards for 10% off. Hmmm, that’s about 15% off my lumber now. Yes, I found a solution to the lowered percentage offered by Lowes. Be happy that we get some sort of discount. They don’t have to do it. Nobody does. Also, if you expect people to give you things just because you served, stop. Nobody owes you anything. That’s life. I don’t expect anything from anyone and then when I do get something, I’m pretty happy about it. Now back to pricing out my fence.
Len
Lowes didn’t even have the decency to post a sign to notify us of the change in their Veterans Discount policy. I didn’t find out until I got to the register and the cashier rang up my large purchase with no discount. I’m going to Home Depot from now on – they have better prices than Lowes and better lumber.
Tom Robinson
Bought two sheets of plywood today, $134. Found out after he rang it up no discount.
Tom
Bought five 2X6X16 planks yesterday and was told there is no longer a veteran discount on lumber, electrical and plumbing supplies. What’s the point of going to Lowes if you’re remodeling or maintaining your “lumber, electrical and plumbing” centric home?
The stores are physically terrible with “stuff” cluttering up aisles and dirt laying on floors and surfaces.
So long Lowes, hello Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Rural King and local lumber store.
Oren gingrich
Thanks lowes……i am a veteran, and while i neither expect nor require a discount for my service, it sure is nice to get one where i do. I came to lowes BECAUSE of the military discount. You want to cut it back or remove it, thats fine its your choice. Likewise it is also my choice to not shop at lowes any longer. I dont require anything, but i really hate it when you punish 1 group to promote another group.
Veteran friendly my ass.
Wayne Mosley
When you sign a blank check to the United States government with your life and have somebody like Lowe’s thank you then turn around at the worst of times and jerk the rug out from under you sucks. I do all my own home improvements that requires lumber 2x4s plywood OSB sheetrock electrical wiring. What you have left us with is not home improvement it’s piddly ass home repair s***guess your contractors got mad of us getting the same discount for doing our own work so Lowe’s can kiss a big ass.
Craig Bussanmad
Kjusr drove by lowes and home depot went60 miles our and spent money at menards.its the principal of it not the savings
Mason Thompson
It is a Damm same that I shed blood and sweat and can’t a 10% discount thanks Lowes I’m glad to know where you stand on Veteran’s. I guess I will be taking my business elsewhere !
Wayne Madden
We have done lots of shopping at Lowes. Not any longer. We served our country and proud of it. We kept the ones back home safe. And now Lowes does this. I really think you will regret it. If you don’t appreciate a Veteran, then I don’t care to put money in your pockets!
Jim
Does your grocery store or gas station give you 10% off for being a veteran?
CLARK ANTHONY KING
I have been loyal since they gave the discount. I like the store better than Menards and Home Depot. I do drive extra miles to get to Lowes but will stop at Home Depot as they are actually closer. I recently was told at the register that the clerk could not get the discount to work, thanked me for my service and gave me 10% non-military discount. I did learn recently @ Home Depot, when I bought the last 3 of the same item, one of which had a torn package and one was okay and another had no package. The clerk said they can discount them up to 50% at the register without management getting involved. I will continue to use Lowes, just not as my primary shopping place. Sorry they changed the plan I felt honored when I used it and I was thanked for service in Nam. The country is reverting back to the lack of welcome home to vets for serving. Thank you to those that recognize us, it means a lot even though its 50 years late.
Stacey
Lowe’s has definitely cut the military discount on appliances. I was about to hit purchase on a dishwasher when I noticed instead of the $49.90 discount (10% military discount) I should have been credited I was only given a $3.90 discount. Guess I’ll be purchasing my dishwasher from Home Depot now, thanks Lowe’s you were always my go to until now.

Military discount that really isn’t. It’s a use of veterans to make them look like they care. ANYONE can get a 10% discount. If you’re going to place the military sacrifice and service into your business in the form of a discount, then DON’T limit it it to full priced items. You’re not giving up anything special towards the discount. It should be there, PERMANENT, against all prices, sale, clearance or otherwise. Above and on top of, otherwise it’s a public stunt using veteran’s as a prop.
And like I said, ANYONE can get a 10% discount. Go look in the recycle bin or trash can at your local post office. Change of Address packets get tossed all the time and have the 10% off coupon. Or you can just purchase them electronically off eBay for a dollar, have them delivered into your inbox and printed off for store use.

My son went to Lowes and was purchasing bags of mulch. He was told no discount because they were on sale

I shopped exclusively at Lowes. I felt that if they cared enough to offer a discount I would stay loyal to them even though not all items are cheaper. So now I will just shop around more, their loss.

I stayed with Lowes prior to and during Covid and paid the $11.+ for campfire kindling masquerading as a 2×4 x 8′. All the while, another real lumber establishment had the same prices yet offered far superior lumber quality. Their Prime was really prime. But I stayed with Lowes frankly because of the offered veteran’s discount. Now I learned that it only applies to certain items, yet the staff at the checkout cannot specifically tell me what IS a qualified product that is discounted 10% for veterans. It may be easier to tell us what IS qualified, as opposed the the veiled descriptions that are purposefully suggesting (on the surface) that there is no change to the policy. There is a big change to the policy. You could of at the very least notified us all that are qualified (we had to align with a third party VA qualifier with a DD214 and all but a urine sample) with an email that clearly provides guidance. You have our information. Or reduce the amount to 8% or 5% across the board, instead of spoon feeding this as a qualified purchase and that as a not qualified purchase. You will likely lose a few folks that had loyalties to Lowes. I will not abandon Lowes entirely, however I will visit my local ‘real’ lumber yard for my lumber purchases, and let the warped splinters go by.
Sorry to learn of this sudden change, and a change that staffers apparently cannot articulate.
Submitted respectfully.
Fred
Go to Home Depot if this continues!!!!!!

Dang, I went to Aldi and eggs were 2.69 dz they used to be .89 cents, how un-American is that? There are all kinds of reasons stores are raising or lowering prices or eliminating benefits. None have anything to do with being anti-American. Also nobody owes anyone gifts for fighting for our country’s freedom. Our country’s freedom should be payment enough. If anything the one’s who deserve discounts and gifts for serving our country are the ones who are not alive to receive them.

Pretty obvious that James never served a day in his life.
No snowflake, veterans do not expect a discount but they do appreciate it.
Given a choice, i will support businesses who recognize those who have served.

Just went to lowes today to buy new drip pans for my oven, a $36 item. I got home and looked at my receipt and it says this item not eligible for discount. Goodbye lowes.

Yes, I noticed this recently when I went to make a large on-line purchase and many if the items were excluded. I went over to HomeDepot, put the same items in my cart and received the full 10% discount on every item.
While I do like my local Lowes store, looks like most of my future purchases will be at HD. Its too bad, Lowes had always distinguished itself in how it supported veterans. Looks like the bean counters took over.

Well, I just spent over $300 at Lowes for lumber. No more military discount! I served for over 20 years and thought that there were people and businesses that really cared about our country and were thankful to those of us that served to help make the country safe and free. That is not the case anymore. I never expected special treatment because of my service, but after years of showing a little care and thanks and now to take it away, hurts.

Amen! Someone took way to much advantage of the military discount and SCREWED to rest of us.

Just found out (at the cash register) that Lowes arbitratily changed their Military discount policy with no notice to their loyal military customers. Embarrassing and disrespectful……. I canceled my appliance order and went across the street to Home Depot and searched for a better price elsewhere. Lowes’s disrepect just cost them my business….Guess we were the “low hanging fruit” in an effort to pay the inflated executive salaries. Good bye Lowes.

Amen! HD is half hour drive for me but they usually have we I need SND a discount.
Overpaid execs are ruining their company relationships with loyal customers like us.

I never expect a discount for being a veteran. I always appreciate one when offered.
Veterans, and especially their families, endure a lot of hardships. Training, even in peace time, can be extremely dangerous to life and limb. The horrors of war are a fact.
Still, at the end of the day we chose the life and got a check at the end of each month for our service.
Again I never expect a thank-you but always appreciate one. Thanks to Lowes for what you do provide.

As a Marine, I chose to shop at Lowe’s, and other companies because they offered the discount. If they drop the military discount, I’ll have to start spending my money elsewhere.
