Makita is adding a new compact reciprocating saw (RJ01W) to their small but well regarded 12V cordless tool lineup. There is high demand for these types of mini-saws, which are great for lighter duty and smaller cutting tasks.
The new saw will face competition from Bosch’s PS60 reciprocating saw, Porter Cable’s ClampSaw, and the Milwaukee Hackzall. Makita claims that the new saw can cut a 1-1/2″ PVC pipe or 1″ EMT conduit 25% quicker than the leading competitor, which might be the edge they need to cut into the market.

What I said in another forum is that “it is a bit funny how we’ve become slaves to battery platforms – much more so than anything that approached this with corded tools (like Porter Cable Bayonet Jigsaw Blades). Once you’ve bought into a platform – buying into another means inconvenience, different batteries, multiple chargers etc. I consider my choices as dumb luck – because when we bought into the Makita LXT 18V line –for one line of business – we decided that the Milwaukee M12 lineup was better for another. As it turned out both of these tool lines expanded pretty well to meet our needs – and some of what we use (e.g. PEX expanders) in the M12 lineup are not duplicated elsewhere. I’ve no doubt that the Bosch 12V lineup includes decent tools – but we’ve been using M12 Hackzalls since we bought our first to try out (and liked it) in 2008. We would have likely foregone this tool until now if we had bought into the Bosch ” or Makita 12V lineups. Good to see that those who are invested in Bosch amd Makita compact line – will now have this sort of tool that we like so much in the Hackzall.
BTW – I recently saw someone offering a Makita small circular saw adapted to us Milwaukee M12 batteries

Adapting the batteries is an interesting idea. As a DIYer who already bought into the Milwaukee M12 line, there is very little chance I would buy a tool from another company’s line, no matter how good it is. For a consumer, it would be most beneficial if all of the 12V batteries were standardized and interchangeable.

Youll never see something like that. Itd be like if dunkin donuts and starbuscks shared all their recipes so they both offered the same coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Why would you want someone going to your competitor. Also if u do go to the comoetitor the competitor wants to make as muc money as possible by making you buy their battery. Imagin if everyone was buying milwaukee tools with dewalt batteries. Neither company would be happy. Plus im sure itd void all warranties on both
