Makita has just announced their new 18V LXT lithium ion 1/4″ die grinder. The new LXDG01 is designed for surface prep metalworking tasks such as grinding, smoothing, and cutting, and features a top speed of 25,000 RPM.
Makita’s product development team worked to slim down the tool for improved access in tight spaces, and it looks like they succeeded. The die grinder is relatively lightweight as well, at 4.4 lbs.
Also built into the new tool is an LED protection circuit with over-torque sensors to help protect the motor, and a low-battery indicator. The housing is made from solid aluminum for greater durability, and the tool features a slide switch with lock-on function.

You can use cut-off and other wheels up to 1-1/2″ in diameter. Total tool length is 15-3/4″.
The LXDG01 kit includes the die grinder, 2 18V LXT batteries, a 30-minute rapid optimum charger, contractor bag, 1/4″ collet cone, and 2 wrenches. If you already have an 18V battery and charger laying around, the LXDG01Z version is just the bare tool.

We’ve bought into the Makita LXT line in a big way – standardizing on it for our 18V tools – with Milwaukee’s M12 line for our installers/fitters. Knowing how we use our Dotco pneumatic die drinders in the shop – this tool just doesn’t seem like one that is well suited for battery power. Even corded die-grinders don’t cut it in my opinion. Maybe this is a niche application that I’m not aware of – like using cordless angle grinders as backwoods cutoff tools.

That thing is way too big.
