Milwaukee has released some new details about their upcoming M18 5.0Ah Li-ion battery pack (48-11-1850). In addition to being their highest capacity battery to date, battery housing has been redesigned for greater durability and protection against moisture and physical shock.
Milwaukee’s VP of marketing, Paul Fry, says that the battery was redesigned from the ground up to deliver “the best combination of cell selection, pack construction, and electronics to deliver maximum performance, durability, and run-time.”

As you might know, power tool brands don’t make their own batteries, which means that every brand can build their next-generation high capacity battery packs with the same exact make and model of battery cell, at least in theory. So whether one brand’s battery pack lasts longer than another’s rests on battery pack design and construction.
One of the improvements of the M18 5.0Ah battery pack involves water-channelling features that help to keep water away from electronics and outside of the battery pack. Additionally, the new housing offers improved protection against vibration and drops. Milwaukee also says that the new housing extends runtime by minimizing heat.
Although Milwaukee has not yet specified the charging time, a full recharge cycle will probably take about 2-hours on their standard M12 and M18 multi-voltage charger.
ETA: November 2014
