Milwaukee M18 Fuel Compact Impact Wrenches

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Compact Impact Wrenches 2854-2855

Somehow, Milwaukee’s magicians engineers managed to shrink down their compact impact wrenches by an almost impossible amount.

A few years ago, a product manager told me that even shaving 1/4″ off the length of an impact driver was a great achievement.

Here, taking Milwaukee’s 3/8″ impact wrench as an example, they chopped – not shaved – the length of the tool head down from 5.9″ (2754) to 4.8″ (2854). AND they increased max torque as well.

Simply amazing.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Mid-Torque Impact Wrenches

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Mid-Torque Impact Wrenches 2960-2962

Need more power? Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel mid-torque impact wrenches also experienced significant size reductions.

The 3/8″ impact wrench here has a 6″ head length, compared to 6.7″ for its predecessor.

Nut-busting torque is the same, but the newest models feature a significant bump-up in fastening torque.

My tool that I would’ve wanted to see is a m12 pin nailer…. And that’s what came out! As someone who owns a growing m12 set and really wants to get into woodworking (once we find a house to purchase) this was a tool I was wishing existed. I love the power of the m12 products compared to the size/weight. An old job of mine had some m12 impacts back in ’10. When it effortlessly turned the head off a steel bolt that had locked up due to paint in the threads, I knew this was the brand I wanted. I did not expect that kind of power in such a small tool, especially since the Bosch tools we were using prior did not seem to have that kind of torque.

I’ve clearly won so nobody else need enter. 🤣

The total NUMBER of new vacuums surprised me – I was expecting the packout one only. I suppose the work they did on that enabled the others.

I need Milwaukee to come out with a lawnmower but I suspect the only way to get that to happen is to break down and buy the Makita – they’ll announce the next day.

The M12 vacuum will be interesting, specifically the battery life. I understand it’s a small vacuum so battery life may not be super important, but I have used some other brand cordless vacs and they seem to use up even 4ah batteries quick. Might be good for things like detailing vehicles in tight spots.

      Nov 26, 2020

There’s a point where battery life doesn’t bother me anymore – and the vacuum seems a perfect use for the big 6ah anyway (just like the compressor).

That may change if you don’t have a decent number of extra batteries.

The large vacuum selection was definitely a surprise. I figured we’d see the packout vac, but not all the others.

If I had Milwaukee’s ear, I’d be asking for a rat-tail style M18 angle grinder with a rotating handle for cut-off work. I prefer them to the paddle switch style.

The Milwaukee pin nailer surprised me the most, it has been discussed and asked for for a few years now. Finally something small that you don’t have to fight with an air hose.

I’m most eager for the new FUEL multi-tool. My OG brushed model has served me well but is looking to retire ( The head that is held on by 4 screws is loose and wobbles from years of hard work).

I’m going to stretch the furthest for 2021 and say I hope for packout adventure/touring motorcycle panniers.
You could even do some sort of collaboration with Honda for the color scheme.

Oh, man, I’d love to win that. I have the OG M12, but I don’t love the power, longevity, or vibration. But when it’s the right tool for the job, it’s the only tool for the job.

Overall, I think I was most surprised by the Packout dolly with its extra storage. I’ve been hanging EMT benders from the handle of my roller and keeping them in check with bungees.

I’d love that Fuel wet/dry if I could justify replacing my beloved non-Fuel. Not sure how I’d stack it anyway, since I throw the crate on top of my stack to carry in stock and carry out trash.

For 2021, I’m pulling hard for an M18 Fuel cheese grater. Maybe a USB screwdriver that fits in my pick at least as well as my 11-in-1.

The Packout dollies (floor and handle) seem to me to be a tacit admission that the original rolling box has wheel problems – I suspect that’s why they went with the buy three get the floor dolly for free promotion as a bit of a “oops sorry”.

It’s going to be mid torque and compact impact wrenches I jumped on early on the large impact wrench from milwaukee first one to have it in my diesel shop and then it’s snowballed in a few months everyone had one not because of me but what the gun could do, left that place not too long ago and what do I see ??? 😠 They tested the 1 inch heavy duty impact (saw it on the livestream for new tools my old hiring manager whas on the video and everything )they choose that shop after I left 😤😡pisses me off lol 🤣 but hey I still love Milwaukee and the largest investments in my toolbox are milwaukee tool nothing but heavy duty .

I’m most excited for the new line of stubby impact wrenches – I have the existing 1/2″ drive which works well and have been looking to expand my collection to the smaller sizes. With the power the compact guns put out what need is there for a bigger one. I primarily use my tools on automotive work, but have several projects in mind on a new RV where I could use an OMT! Thanks for doing the giveaway ToolGuyd, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m most surprised about how compact the stubby impacts are and of the new releases I’m most excited about the mid torque impacts.
At this rate, it won’t be long before Milwaukee makes my air compressor obsolete.
I recently bought the M18 hedge trimmer, it’s awesome.

I’d like to see an m12 packout box with lights and charger like the one out for the m18. If they could figure out how to make it run on 1 or 2 batteries that would be great also. And just for giggles, if it could charge 2 batteries at the same time I would not complain. I don’t ask for much.

Milwaukee is owned by TTI which is pretty big – and they seem entirely willing to make relatively small-market tools (how many people are buying M18 drum machines?).

You can also notice commonalities where it’s clear they build a smaller motor or a better system and the determine which tools they can finally now make.

TTI has claimed that Milwaukee is entirely independent of their other brands like Ryobi and Rigid but I really suspect that new ideas are done there first at times (where shortcomings aren’t as noticed).

Milwaukee has released tools that did not do well in the field (you can sometimes reduce it when a tool isn’t cancelled or replaced but goes out of stock everywhere). They really do seem to want the professional market – and the “prosumers” are a side benefit. Some other brands seem to have it the other way around.

But what really surprised and pleased me the most was the lineup of laser levels. I’ve been in the market for a green laser level to replace my aging red (laser color, now the tool color!) model and my Milwaukee 3-plane laser should be here this weekend. The M12 vacuum is much larger than my Dewalt compact vac that came with the 10-Tool Kit. The scrap storage space would be nice so I don’t have to empty it after every job. (By far most eager for)(Packout compatability would just be next level. It’d be one more nail in the coffin for dewalt….)
The M18 Packout vacuum would be an instant buy for me except I don’t have any M18 tools or batteries. I have a small M12 set so the M12 vac would be my go to. Getting the Oscillating Saw would give me a battery to also use in the M18 packout vacuum.

Ultimately the pin nailer is what piques my interest. Having an older pneumatic pinner I know the value they add to my carpentry. The prospect of a fully cordless pinner with the nailing tech Milwaukee has already brought to market is exciting. And that M18 multi tool is also a pretty exciting tool with it’s easy tool change and ability to accept starlock blades, I could put that to excellent use.

I was surprised to see so many vacuums. Especially the M12 Wet/Dry because I thought the original worked pretty well for a 12V unit.

I’m eager for the M12 Pin Nailer because I have several small projects I could use that on right now.

My 2021 hopeful tool would be a debris vacuum/sweeper/collector that would make it easier to pick up project debris, leaves & acorns. Emphasis on the acorns at my new residence.

I was surprised about the M12 pin nailer most, probably. I didn’t expect one quite yet, and certainly not on the 12 volt platform, although now that they’ve done it it makes much more sense than having it on an 18 volt platform (*cough cough* Ryobi and Makita *wheeze*) I’m looking forward to the M18 Compact Vacuum, even though I recently bought the M18 teapot style vacuum. It seems like this won’t be quite as small, but still very functional. Top tip for anyone reading- the bag that comes with the Milwaukee battery starter packs fits the vacuum and all the accessories, but no battery. Anyway, the compact and Packout vacuums both look great. I guess innovation does happen in a vacuum! I hope I win!

I’m sorry, I forgot to include what I wanted to see from Milwaukee. I’d like to see a redesigned M18 Fuel impact driver that has a redesigned collet, so it doesn’t release bits under fairly normal drilling circumstances. I’d also like to see an updated 6 port charger and, maybe weirdly, a pencil. I’m a big fan of the Hultafors and Pica style pencils, and I’d be interested to see how Milwaukee would innovate this sector. Thanks for the opportunity!

Although its not on the list above, the D handle impact wrench for semi truck repair was what impressed me the most from episode 1. I used to work in the truck maintenance industry a few years ago and we had to haul around a huge compressor along with a pretty hefty air hose and impact wrench to change out tires or do brake service. I never thought that a battery operated platform could provide the power need to do such a task. And to think that not only is it a battery platform, but what a single 18v 12ah battery can do compared to $3000 in pneumatic equipment is baffling to me. That really blew my mind. I am really excited for the packout vacuum. They already have it at my local home depot and i have been wanting to get it, but i hope there is a deal sometime this week that will save me some cash or give me something extra. And of course the oscillating tool. I work as a remodeler now, and my Milwaukee m18 oscillating tool is one of my most used tools. I have been waiting for this version since the original came out. I do hope milwaukee makes a packout rapid charger that charges multiple m18 batteries all at once.

I was also most surprised by the M12 pinner (that they went 12 volt, but it is an outstanding platform). I am most excited about the new OMTs–the 12v looks very powerful, so the M18 should be absurdly beefy. Love it. And I would like to see if Milwaukee comes out with an M18 roofing nailer to rival Dewalt.

I have been in the m12 line for aboit 12 years and this has been on my wishlist for just about as long. I am hoping for Milwaukee tools to launch a hybrid m12 worklight in 2021 that can be both plugged in or used with a m12 battery. That is a tool I use frequently l, tjat I wish was m12. The 23ga. pin nailer being M12 is the most surprising thing. I don’t like the idea of having to fragment my tool collection more. The other nailers are M18. One would assume a competent design team would understand that keeping all nailers on the same battery platform would be the best. But I guess they decided to forgo logic. Forces a user to spend more time to keep tools/batteries in line/proximity to meet their needs.

Honestly, the number of lighting releases that improve upon, replace, or otherwise supplant their already segment leading offerings. From this list, it’s probably the m12 pack out vac. I expected m18 but didn’t expect they could bring one with enough power+quiet+volume in m12.

I’m anxious to see the compact vacuum. I’ve been looking for an excuse to get into the M18 and that vac might be the excuse I’ve been looking for. It would be a lot easier than digging out my little Shop Vac and having to deal with a cord. I can also see some projects where standing on a ladder with a small cordless vac would be easier and safer than dealing with a corded unit no matter how small it is. Also I wouldn’t mind seeing a slightly larger version of the 3 inch compact cutting tool.

I am looking forward to Milwaukee creating a M12 or 18 right angle fuel drill. Something smaller than the hole hawg drills but larger than the installation driver.

I love the idea of the more powerful mid torque impact wrenches! So many times trying to jam a big gun into a tight German CNC machines at work having to use universal joints and adapter is much harder then it needs to be. The mid torque guns would fit and have enough power to get the job done. In automotive work it seems like there’s never any space so anytime you can get the power of a large impact in a smaller size is a win. Lets hope Dewalt can keep up being 300fltbs vs 600 in the mid category.

I am particularly jazzed about their super low profile impact wrenches, I work in the HVAC trade, and space near/inside units is minimal, especially for indoor air handlers mounted above ceiling. A short depth impact with shallow sockets will let you get a lot of places a normal impact wrench or driver would be too large for.

The most surprising announcement to me was the M12 Wet/Dry Vacuum. Not even ten years ago cordless vacuums were a pipe dream and now there is a 12V Brushless Cordless Wet/Dry vacuum on the market; what a world… The M12 Wet/Dry Vac will be a staple in the auto detailing, electrical, and finishing worlds.

The most anticipated tool for me is the M12 Vacuum. It will certainly come in handy around the house and for cleaning out the cars.

Hopefully Milwaukee comes out with an M18 Lawnmower to supplement their OPE line. But it may not fit what Milwaukee has in mind for their OPE lineup. So, the runner up new Milwaukee tool for me would be stackable Packout trays (like a certain Black and Yellow competitor has for their mobile tool storage).

The Packout Vacuum surprised me the most as the Packout system is a game changer. It took the American tool companies way to long to figure out we need a way to carry multiple tools on and off a job site. I build cabinets and am mostly a Festool and Mafell user and all of their tools come with cases that click together allowing me to carry multiple tools at the same time. I have some Milwaukee tools and just jumped into the M18 system after looking at the Dewalt stuff.

Surprised wouldn’t be the exact term I would use for the Milwaukee Pipeline series of virtual tool launching events, but I am extremely interested in the M12 Pin Nailer and M18 Fuel Packout Wet/Dry Vacuum.

What would truly surprise (and delight) me is if TTI/Milwaukee would release an officially sanctioned battery adapter that would enable me to use M18 Fuel batteries on Ryobi 18 volt tools. I’m aware you can find such adapters offered by third party vendors on Amazon, but I would never purchase something from a vendor I don’t know/trust, especially if operational failures would void the Milwaukee battery warranty. I’m sure my pipe dream hasn’t happened already due to cross-brand cannibalization concerns, but speaking for myself I would happily keep buying Milwaukee’s construction grade tools & batteries for work, AND buy even MORE of the esoteric Ryobi offerings for both work and home. All the money still goes to TTI and I would have zero incentive to look at a non-TTI branded tool ever again. Win-win.

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of vacuums coming out. I’d seen the new pack out vac but missed the compact and 12v until now somehow. I think I’m looking forward to the 12v vac the most, the which did surprise me a bit, but I’m realizing that having a lighter, smaller vac for all those messes I make in relatively difficult to access areas would be very helpful.

Love the pin nailer. Definitely on the list of things to get. The Pack Out Vac was well overdue.
This is probably cost prohibitive, but it’d be interesting to have Pack Out inserts (?) that could accommodate specific tools. For example: a router plate that would snap into the toolbox that would allow you to use it like a router table. Maybe one that lets you attach a jug saw to use like a scroll saw. Maybe a multi function plate that allows both or more.
    Just spitballin’ here……

    Thanks for the opportunity

I’m most surprised by the compact impact wrenches. 250 ft/lbs is impressive for such a small size. I currently am a yellow and black man and have their midrange impact for automotive use and while it’s a very powerful tool indeed, it’s abilities quickly become a moot point when it doesn’t fit anywhere inside the engine bay!

Even though the power is less than that of what I’m used to, I’m eager to find out how much better(or worse) having less power available everywhere rather than massive power available some places would be. I’ve been needing a real break through experience!

For 2021 I say keep improving the impacts. If power could be increased sans size gain, my yellow flooded box may start to turn red!

Did not expect the pin nailer but it looks pretty cool if it has the power. The new impacts are what I would be most excited for/interested in. I would love a new brushless 12v compact jigsaw, especially if it has the barrel style body.

The new M18 Fuel Compact Vacuum surprised me the most.

Most eager for the fuel OMT… I’ve been putting off buying one because I knew they had to be close.

Hoping for an “all in one” high volume low pressure/low volume high pressure inflator in 2021 for car camping.

If the technology exists for the MX rock breaker, how about an M12 “air” hammer for automotive applications? This is what I would like to see.

A tracksaw would really be nice. Also, when will milwaukee make more tools specific to HVACR?

Would like to see Milwaukee come out with a walk-behind lawnmower — one with all-wheel drive that can power through even tall wet grass and weeds.

Would also like to see Milwaukee’s 90 degree die grinder shrink to the approximate size of a Dotco pneumatic 90 degree die grinder.

I really like the new Milwaukee compact impact wrenches, and think that a nice feature for the future would be to allow for the battery assembly to detach from the handle but remain connected by a power cable.

Have to say the Pinner is my top pick of the new tools. I just hope they got it all right on the first go around and won’t need any updates like their previous battery nailers.

The tool I would most want is the M18 fuel multi oscillating tool. This would make quick work of trimming doorways when installing flooring.

The new M18 compact Impact Wrenches surprised me the most. Smaller form factor and more power is always a plus. Kinda gives me incentive to replace my large compressor and impact for battery power. I am certainly most eager to get the new Fuel M18 Oscillating tool. I’ve wanted to get one and figured they’d be bringing a Fuel version out any day now so I held off on getting the current one.

I think the M12 Pin Nailer and the M18 Vacuum packouts are super useful and clever. It would be cool if they made more M12 updates. I think they’ve kind of let their M12 line get a little outdated. They’re all useful but just could do some updating. Definitely picking up the Pin nailer and vacuum though!

Since I just got the backpack vac and won’t need any of the new releases, I have my eye on the multi tool, very much looking forward to tool free blade changes.

Would love to get the pin nailer, looks nice and compact. I held off on buying a cordless pin nailer for a while hoping Milwaukee would come out with one, That’s what i am missing in the shop.

Also like the new M18 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool, looks compact.

The continued improvements in the m18 impacts I find most impressive. I’m happy with my older gen but the mid-torque models are generating some tool lust :-).

Looking forward to picking up the oscillating tool. I purchased a cheap one for a single project thinking I wouldn’t use it. Wow was I wrong. I can’t believe how much I’ve used it for various projects. Now I can justify a nice one.

I’d like to see some more improvements on the nailers. I’m sure we will start to see them get smaller and lighter and I can’t wait for that
