Porter Cable Powered Hand Planer

Porter Cable’s new hand planer (PC60THPK) was designed for contractors, and is powerful enough to make 5/64″ cuts in a single pass. It can be used for a variety of planing applications on wood planks, doors and joists, and can also chamfer or profile edges.

The low-profile planer features a 6A 16.5k RPM motor, two cutting blades, 11 positive depth stop settings, a 11-1/2″ long cast aluminum shoe with 3 chamfer grooves, a kickstand to protect blades and prevent work surface damage, over-molded grip for more comfort and less vibration, and a vacuum-compatible dust extraction port with collection bag.

Users have the choice between using HSS blades more aggressive applications, such as when planing nail-embedded wood, or carbide blades for projects that require finer cutting.

The new Porter Cable hand planer kit has an MSRP of $90 and includes 2 high speed steel blades, 2 carbide blades, a filtered dust bag, vacuum adapter, metak rabbiting fence, and a kit box.

Looks like a nice enough tool – but is more in keeping with the times than with its Porta-Plane and Versa-Plane forebears – which once represented what Porter Cable was all about. I guess that PC has been given the task of competing at a price point that does not allow building production-quality planes of the sort that can still be had from folks like Virutex – their door planer looks a lot like an old PC

I’ve got this Porter Cable Planer blades and I’m happy with it after a half dozen small projects. I don’t have anything to compare it to other than sanding and now I’m getting into hand planing, but that’s different all together.
