Porter Cable 18V Cordless Lithium Ion Drill

Almost a year ago we reviewed Porter Cable’s 18V Cordless Drill, which I described as exceptionally well built and a strong recommendation. At the time I was really surprised to find it to be a mighty fine drill. A few other blogs reviewed the same drill recently, mirroring my own impressions of it.

In their well written and rather amusing review, Home Fixated goes on to say that the drill offers rock star power.

Tools in Action also took a look at this drill as part of their 18V kit summary review, and mentioned how balanced the drill feels in-hand.

It’s always reassuring to see repeatable results. It’s also good to see that I wasn’t the only one surprised with how well the drill performed. Way to go, Porter Cable engineers!

Glad to hear that Porter Cable has not been exclusively relegated to the position of “also-ran” in the now Stanley-Black&Decker lineup. They still seem to be playing second fiddle to Dewalt – but maybe tools like this will garner some attention. I started buying and using power tools in the mid-1960’s – and PC was then synonomous with excellence in woodworking tools like sanders, power planes and routers. We still use many of these workhorses today. Sadly, our first foray into cordless drills (great for their day PC Magnequench 12V ones) seemed to have no worthy descendant at PC – with the result of having us move to Makita and Milwaukee brands

I too am caught off guard too by all the praises, especially since this thing feels like a toy. I work for Lowe’s and man, this line of PC 18v was a God send vs the old B&D line we had (I’m embarassed to even mention its name… so I won’t) I was very impressed by all the new tools… except this one. However, it hides it’s toy like feel and looks, with good power (feels stronger than only 325 in.lbs of torque). Great job here and with the rest of the line.

I really like PC tools. Porter Cable and Craftsman account for 90% of the tools I own. I’m retired and do A LOT of volunteer construction work throughout the US. My PC circular saw is among my favorites and it is for my friends who “borrow” my tools also. When there’s a lot of framing to be done, I have trouble hanging onto my saw for myself. Since my Craftsman drill is getting old, I’d like to replace it with that 18V Li-Ion Cordless!
