The other day, we talked a little about demo-style Phillips screwdrivers. There are some applications for an overbuilt demo-style Phillips driver, although slotted screwdrivers are more abusable and worthy of such “demo” designations.
But, the consensus of the comments is that demo Phillips screwdrivers are completely unnecessary.

In a comment, Cole says “I think demo just had an appealing ring to the marketing department.” And then Steven added “In reality I can call any tool ‘demo’.”
So let’s have some fun with this. What tools would sound silliest or most appropriate to be overbuild and described as a “demo” tool? Here are my ideas:
- Demo magnifying glass!
- Demo Tweezers!
- Demo scroll saw
- Demo non marring pipe wrench!
Well, that last one isn’t as good, because it’s not unreasonable to imagine an overbuild pipe wrench, although non-marring ones are generally designed for installation of delicate-surfaced fixtures. But hopefully you get the idea.
So what do you think would be most inappropriate to be redesigned as a demo-grade tool?

Pfft. Like “MAX” voltage batteries, demo-everything tools are the future of tool marketing.

4 foot demo square. I’m imagining an inch thick square you use to knock out studs the turn around and align new studs.

That’s if you can lift it.

Yes! This one is great.

Demo precision screwdrivers. Ya know, for those really stubborn t6 screws. They could package them with a 12 lb lump hammer.
Mike
Well, demo magnifying glass could be a laser, demo non marring pipe wrench is a strap wrench or even a plierswrench, demo tweezers or scroll saws definitely come in jumbo industrial versions for mining and auto wrecking and such…how about demo wet/dry sandpaper? or demo paintbrush? or demo keychain tape measure? Demo precision #0000 PH drivers? Oh oh I know, Woodpecker tools are all demo grade. They will absolutely demolish your wallet*

How about the Starrett hammer/magnifying glass combo:

It’s been made for a lot of years so some folks must buy them.
My thought for a unique demo tool – is a:
Demolition micrometer. You can use a light touch to measure the size of a concrete block or just screw it on down to crush the life out of it.
Nathan
to be fair I’ve seen that called a Jeweler’s hammer.
Jon
I just posted on the original thread before seeing this about “my demo paint brushes and rollers”.
I guess “demo” is up there with “professional” and “gourmet” as meaningless terms for product packaging.
Mike
reminds me of the “Atomic Burrito”. Personally, I want food with the lowest uranium content possible.

How about:
– Demo Sharpie (or Inkzall for us Milwaukee fans)
– Demo Steel Wool
– Demo Estimating Wheel
Mark
…and for those that have not tried an inkzall, you really are missing out.

Lump “demo” in with extreme, ultra, max & tactical as marketing BS (but with a few acceptable applications for authenticity’s sake) and apply it to anything. Tactical Bandanna, Extreme Tweezer, Demo Broom.
Like adding “in bed” to fortune cookie fortunes – but less funny.
Diplomatic Immunity
I was just going to say that it still beats the decade or so in which everything was extreme. You’re right, everything is now tactical. Maybe a camouflaged tactical broom.

You could sell a lot of Demolition Condoms.

Don’t be so quick to dismiss the demo magnifying glass. A magnifying glass + sunlight = a popped ant. A 48″ Fresnel + sunlight = vaporized concrete. Wear safety glasses.

Glad to see my questioning the usage of a Demo Phillips has shown I’m not the only one that doesn’t see the purpose 🙂
Bigwillie
Demo simply means it can be struck with a hammer. For use as a manual impact screwdriver to loosen rusted stuck bolts

A demo Phillips sure it’s useful. Let’s go for a demo #000 Phillips maybe not so much lol

Demo 4′ Level — (the kind with the notch on the end so you can really honk on those stuck 2x4s when removing a wall)
Demo Micrometer (used to keep track of that “demo” progress — perhaps it could have a bluetooth link to time billing software?) I have to say, though, “Tactical Micrometer” has a ring to it. Would need to add a better grip with a lot of rubber sculpting on the handle to be convincing. And add a knife blade — you always add a knife blade when you say Tactical.

If all you have is a demo keystone flat blade and you need to remove hinge pins, you’ll wish you had a demo phillips. But then, that’s what garage sale phillips are for…

So this thread started with demo screw drivers I going to back up the demo screw driver. I replaced a deck this summer and the home owner stained and sealed his deck every 2 years the screw heads where clogged when we stared we striped almost every screw trying to back it out with a impact. So I took a screw driver and a hammer to clean out the head of the screw that worked until the screw driver broke went to the hardware store and the demo screw driver was the only one that had a strike plate on top with a full tang. I have since then used it to recover old shiplap and other historic building features so it is a tool that dose have a place in my tool bag
Jo
Have you ever done demo work. I used a demo phillips to put holes in drywall all the time. And have watched my cabinet guy search for studs with one daily.
