Black & Decker has teamed up with U-Bild to provide three free project plans – a birdhouse, hope chest, and a jewelry box, to help you skip the lines at the mall and craft a homemade gift for that special someone.

The featured projects are really practical gift ideas, and reinforce the adage that it’s the thought that counts! You can find the project plans at Black & Decker’s Smart Select power tool micro-site.

If you still want to stick with traditional gifts this winter, don’t forget that it’s never to early to plan for Valentine’s Day!

B&D’s SmartSelect tools seem to be highly rated as value-oriented tools, and might make for a good gift idea for that special someone looking to try their hand at woodworking. However, if you have a healthy budget, we could suggest more robust alternatives.

Unrelated note: In case you were wondering, yes, we agree with the consensus that some of the Smart Select tools’ adjustment dials resemble See n Say toys.

  1. Black & Decker Circular Saw

What a great idea! More tool makers should provide free plans for do-it-yourself gift projects. Plus, I think it’d be easier to convince my wife that I DO actually need another saw or drill if she thought there was a chance that I’d make something great for her with it. 😉
