I’ve been looking to buy a couple of Sortimo T-Boxxes for years now, but no matter how long I wait, they’re just not coming to the USA.
Every now and then someone points me to Adam Savage’s video about these (embedded below), asking where to find them. Short answer: you can’t.
Well, you can, it just costs a whole lot of money. There’s one USA specialty van outfitter that lists them, but they don’t really have a sales page.
Unless you’re someone like Adam Savage, you’re not going to be able to easily buy these boxes domestically, and you’ll likely have to spend a small fortune to import them.
Sortimo T-Boxxes aren’t much different from many of the organizers available here in the USA, but they’re a caliber better – if my Bosch L-Boxxes are any indication – and they’re fully modular. Plus, they’re larger than a lot of the small parts organizers I’ve seen.
I just checked, and there is a listing for some of these via Amazon USA, but they’re priced at $99 each. It has a better configuration than shown above, but that’s not what accounts for the price. The seller is likely importing them, rather than buying directly from Sortimo, resulting in an extra markup that you have to pay for.
At Amazon.co.uk, they’re £41, and at Amazon.de, they’re 40 Euros. That’s for the configuration shown above, others cost a little more depending on which style of boxes are included.
Since I have plenty of bins leftover from when I bought lots of L-Boxx-1A organizers, I’ll reconfigure the T-Boxxes as needed. Otherwise I probably would have spent a little more time thinking about the configuration I needed.
I ordered a bunch from Amazon.co.uk, and if it all turns out well I’ll fill ’em up and then buy more.
Amazon.de has them for a little cheaper, but for some reason the Amazon UK shipping was a little more favorable. Plus, if something goes wrong with the order, or the products are damaged, it’ll be easier communicating with Amazon UK customer service. But, Amazon DE probably has some English-speaking customer service reps.
As an aside, I found it curious that Amazon DE has a Beta English-language version of the site that attempts to auto-translate itself .
So, my T-Boxxes are on the way, and I’m hoping for a good experience. The price was a bit steep, but not much more than it would have cost for smaller metal boxes from an industrial supply dealer. I went that path before, and received dented and bent cabinets. The drawers are fine, just not very customizable.
The unit price, after VAT is taken off, is £34.17, or about $46 each. There will be a currency conversion fee applied by my credit card company, and shipping must be taken into account. When all is said and done, I expect for the price to be around $54 per case, unless there are other gotchas and fees to be paid.
The last time I checked with a USA importer a few years ago, they were maybe $85 or so each, plus shipping.
Wish me luck, I’m hoping for the best! Of course that wasn’t the only reason for this post. I know that lots of you have been looking to buy these Sortimo T-Boxxes for as long as I have. Unfortunately, Bosch doesn’t seem to be interested in partnering with Sortimo on their T-Boxxes lineup.
I also figured that I could serve as a guinea pig, to see if they’re worth the hype.
Too bad those fancy docking shelves aren’t available here. But, it should be pretty easy to make a good-looking DIY emulation.
Oh, and I also ordered a Bosch 10.8V circular saw. I can find replacement blades here easily. I was tempted to order the 10.8V grinder, but it doesn’t look like 76 mm (~3″) cutoff wheels with 10 mm arbor holes are easily found.

So, why buy these intead of L-boxxes?
Sean
Not trying to rain on your parade or anything, just curious.
BonPacific
The clear top is a big benefit. Other than that I’m not sure, I haven’t used either.
David c.
After watching the video, it appears that these would be better than an L-Boxx for sorting small parts. There appears to be a retention system that locks the bins in place and prevents small parts from spilling into other bins.
Stuart
The L-Boxx has a grid on the bottom and foam lid insert. Parts shouldn’t go flying from bin to bin, unless they’re very small and flat parts, such as #2 washers.
My Stanley organizers have a retention system too, but some parts still make it into other bins.
Then again, nothing short of a hermetic seal will stop all parts. I’ve got small teflon washers that can never stay put.
Sean
Ok, now I get it. I use the i-BOXX72-10 inside a L Rack S https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/boschtools-ocs/tool-and-accessory-storage-23539-c/ to get the same effect (clear top, interlocked cover)
Now I see, I could do it in one Sortimo piece for $54; whereas the Bosch combo I use is $70. So… Actually, Stuart is getting a better deal and all in one piece! Will these interlock with my existing L-boxx system?
Stuart
They’re shallower, they fit more bins, they’re more reconfigurable, and they have clear lids.
Here’s the L-Boxx-1A for comparison. They’re also discussed here: https://toolguyd.com/great-price-on-bosch-l-boxx-1-organizers/ .
L-Boxxes are great for tools, and one or two make for good organizers.
iBoxxes are an alternative (https://toolguyd.com/bosch-l-boxx-rack/), but they’re small, and they’re really best used with L-Boxx racks.
I have a growing collection of Stanley organizers, and they’re good, but the quality has been lacking and I’ve been desiring for more bin options.
https://toolguyd.com/stanley-25-compartment-organizers-have-dropped-in-quality-a-little-bit/
Most other parts organizers are intended for storage of construction fasteners, meaning larger bins and fewer of them.
Durham makes some nice metal organizer drawers, but the lids aren’t clear and the organizers are single-piece inserts.
For most DIYers, a T-Boxx is overkill.
Dave
I recently discovered the Stack-On DCOG-10 (new model is DCY-10), and it’s a pretty handy box, if you’re talking about the Stanley boxes that I have in mind, this Stack-On is very similar to those. These aren’t made in the USA, but a good portion of Stack-On’s other products are still made in the States.

I used to have the boxes with non-removable bins. Oh boy will I never look back. The modular/removable bins are a great idea, regardless of brand. No more trying to scoop out nails/bolts/odds & ends.
Keep us updated on the UK bins!

T-Boxxes are really, really awesome. Once you knock one over and absolutely nothing spills out, you will stop feeling guilty about spending the extra money.
A couple years ago I spent about a month trying to obtain spare insert boxes for my T-Boxxes. They’re not outrageously expensive but they are incredibly hard to buy in the USA. I bought mine through a truck equipment supplier in New York. They not only had no idea what it was that I was trying to order, but they screwed up the part numbers multiple times, tried to charge me usurious shipping rates for not picking them up at their warehouse, and insisted on doing business by fax (we settled on e-mailed PDFs). I think it took about 10 phone calls to complete the purchase. I complained to Sortimo/Knapheide USA HQ that they need to move their business into the 21st century but they said their hands were tied.
I have no idea how companies like Knapheide survive. Sortimo, if you are listening, let me tell you about this miraculous new thing called online shopping!
Jon
FYI, if you have to ship something back to Amazon in Europe they will not offer you a prepaid shipping label like they do in the USA. Even if it is damaged in shipping or defective. They will offer to reimburse you a small amount for your shipping expenses. But it will not be 1/10th of what it will cost you to send it back.
I have had this happen several times and the cost for me to ship it back was more than the cost of the thing I wanted to return. So I just had to eat it.
Stuart
That’s what I figured, and which is why I ordered a couple, but not just 1 or 2. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for a good outcome.
RKA
Thanks! That’s particularly concerning given amazon’s poor packing practices. Let’s see what happens with Stuart’s order.
Tim
An exactly why wouldn’t you consider something like this at a fraction of the price?
http://m.harborfreight.com/19-bin-portable-parts-storage-case-93928.html
You could have 7 for the price of 1. Easily available. Easily returnable. And get as many or as few as you want on a moments notice.
You could be organized in a weekend and be done with it. Buy 4-6 extras to have available at that price would be a no brainer
I always question the logic of someone who stores $40 of infrequently used hardware in a $50 box.
Adrian
Take another look at the internal bins in the Sortimo image at the top of the article – they have way, way more variety than the Stanley/Harbor Freight organizers do. That is very, very handy. I know. I’ve been trying to get a buddy to 3D print me some long thin bins (1×4, 1×5) for my Stanleys.
Also, I’m not a HF-hater by any means but there is a very big quality difference. I have a handful of Stanley and Plano organizers that have much more than $40 worth of stuff in them (electronics components, etc) so the quality matters to me. Everyone’s cost-benefit equation is going to be a bit different of course.
I agree that the Stanleys have dropped a bit in quality in the last couple years. Bummer.
Tim
Correct. Everyone has a different value proposition.
But, when you are repeatedly complaining about not being able to find stuff you packed away, You are probably more likely to get organized quicker buying 50 organizer for $400 and getting it done than paying $50 each and buying 4 or 6 at a time over the next 2 years. And probably never ending up with 50.
Use the money saved on Yoga classes to improve your physical flexibility and mental well being. A much better ROI and strategic investment.
But again, it is all about what you value.
Hepdog
I have used the H-F system professionally, and all I can say is you get what you pay for. The HF is essentially the same thing as the sortimo, but the HF lacks quality; the latches are broken on 2 of my shallow unit and the lid flexes enough that parts jump bins when carried. My HF units now never leave my home shop – which is really what they are designed for; homeowner grade storage.
My current system is the stanley / dewalt version. I prefer the stanley as you can get it in a shallow depth version, but you have to order it online: https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-FMST14920-FatMax-Shallow-Organizer/dp/B008J2IPU8/
at $20, it not much more $$ than the HF, and 1/4 the price of sortimo
Gus
Buying an inferior product, with worse functionality, very likely made in China, etc. Each to their own, I would rather buy the best and cry only once. If you keep that line of logic, why spend money on toilet paper if you are cleaning crap. You might as well not buy anything and start recycling egg cartons to store your parts.
Josh
I managed to buy a few T-Boxxes from an eBay seller, and I love them. For mobility, I think i-boxxes in a l-boxx3d or l-rack would work better, but in the shop they’re marvelous things.
Milwaukee tool Steve
I know this is an off topic question but were is the best place to buy used tools?
adam
Yard sales, estate sales, auctions
Toolfreak
Ebay is pretty good if you know what you are looking for and what you are willing to pay. Craigslist may be an option depending on your area.
If you just want to browse random tools and see what you can get and hope to score a deal, then garage/estate sales are definitely the way to go.
Neil
I just saw on another blog they are opening a US store?

Who is? Sortimo? Which blog is that?

Nice find. Looks like the L-Boxxes are the similar $99 pricing that’s on Amazon. That’s too bad.
But good for Stuart so he didn’t find out after buying from overseas that he could have bought it cheaper from Sortimo’s online store.
Craig H.
Good luck Stuart!
Is it possible to have a business where you import Sortimo and Bosch items that are not available in the USA and sell them in the USA? If Sortimo and/or Bosch discover you doing that, do they stop selling stuff to you?
I guess it wouldn’t be very profitable to fly to the UK or Germany, buy the items from a store, fill up your suitcases, and then fly back to the USA. Or have a friend buy a bunch of items from a UK/German store, put them in a container and ship them by boat to the USA. All the import taxes would probably eat into your profits.
I’m sure there are people smarter than me who have looked into this and decided against it, otherwise it would be easy to buy all the stuff here in the USA. Sigh.
Stuart
If you buy retail overseas, you pay tax.
And no, it wouldn’t be profitable to buy a bunch of stuff and then bring it back in your luggage. PLUS, you’re limited as to how much you can buy overseas without paying customs.
So no, it wouldn’t be very profitable.
But maybe if you were already on vacation, it might be worth it to pick up a few extra of something you know some friends really wanted.
If you’re going through the trouble of ordering a palette’s worth of stuff, you might as well set up a small reselling business.
Adam
You guys got me thinking, how many T-boxxes can I securely fit in a couple of large suitcases when I make my quarterly trip from the UK to Miami?
And how much Dewalt contraband can I fit in them on my return home?
🙂
alan
Not feeling the hinges though.
Nothing worst than having a small parts cover find it’s way open….when it should not be.
Hepdog
I was just looking at knapheide website a week ago – the T-Boxxes were going for $60 each. Seems they revamped the sales pages on 7-28 and removed the sales mechanism.
Nate818
Adam Savage got that Hollywood money.
Kurt
I’ve resisted the Savage effect for those boxes. They look very cool, and there is no doubting their function, but still, getting enough to replace all that storage in my shop, even at the better price you found, would let me well on my way to a CNC cutter or a laser.
One the other hand, watching his videos has lead me to purchase Knipex pliers (wonderful) and quite a few other things.
And I’m building one of those rolling tool storage carts this week LOL.
fred
The truck up-fitter company that we used (Dejana) offered some solutions using Sortimo products. Always nice but pricey. We had a love-hate relationship with most of the parts boxes we carried on the trucks – probably 90% Stanley or Zag 14710 boxes but other boxes from Flambeau , Plano and Zag thrown into the mix. We sure would have liked something better but not at £50 to £60 with shipping from the UK. In the shops – we had Rotabins and other Durham parts bins for the more common stuff. I have to admit that they do take up more room than probably needed for really small part storage – but they can sometimes be had at good prices
http://www.ebay.com/itm/112-Openings-Durham-745-95-12-Deep-Sloped-Parts-Bin-Hemmed-to-Hold-Parts-NEW-/121001890252
Another thing to look at for small parts might be the Huot cabinets that used to house drill bits, taps and dies. They could easily be repurposed with some different labels to hold small parts.
Corey
I’ve had great experience with my dewalt tough system clear tops. Can’t remember the bin sizes it came with, but I’ve got quite the collection of all shapes from the rest of my tough boxes (13 so far) and I’ve got entire clear tops configured for bits, fasteners, electrical components, and even a couple dedicated tool sets. Stuart, how would you compare these to the dewalt organizers? I’m always looking around for new and efficient storage solutions.
JD
+1 Love the tough system organizer. Keeps everything perfectly in place and IP56 I believe.
Bill
Love the Toughsystem also, jut put together my hardware orgainizer with (8) DS100 and the Toughsystem cart. About $325 in to the project……works for me.
Toolfreak
I wasn’t impressed with the Bosch L-Boxxes made by Sortimo, the hard plastic seemed pretty brittle/fragile and the interior was a complete waste of space for storing tools. I sold the ones that came with the tool kits and use Craftsman tool bags instead. I can fit all of my Bosch 12V Max tools, batteries, and charger in one 18in. bag, which would have taken over three of the L-Boxx-1’s to store.
I do like the Sortimo organizers though, they look pretty decent for small parts storage. If the hard plastic is the same as the L-Boxxes though, they are just waiting to be dropped and crack or break. The handle also seems like a weak point.
Given the variety of inexpensive plastic storage options at Sears, Lowe’s, Home Deport, and even Walmart, I can’t see the Sortimo stuff being so much better it’s worth paying such a premium. I like the big Stack-on organizers since their stuff is made in the USA, and the plastic is softer ABS-like material that doesn’t crack or break even when dropped. The downside is usually the hinges – the cheaper plastic storage units have tabs on the back of the lid that go into the bottom and no metal pin or bar – so if you ever tweak the lid back too far you’ll snap off the hinges. Still, worth it for the price – to me.
Good luck with the order though, hopefully it works out for you.
I’ll definitely look forward to a full review of the circular saw, too.
John S
The l-boxxes themselves are anything but brittle… There are some videos online of guys throwing them around quite a good bit to no harm.
However, I agree that the plastic inserts that they have designed for different tools are typically not done very well, and that plastic is definitely brittle. You can fit a ton of tools in any size l-boxx if you don’t use the designated plastic inserts they provided… And if you want to keep things neat and tidy, kaizen foam is not too bad of an investment.
I imagine you could easily store all of your 12v tools in an L-boxx 3 without much difficulty.
I have fully committed to an l-boxx and l-rack system, but I know it is not for everyone.
Toolfreak
I really tried to make the best of the L-Boxxes, since I like Bosch stuff and the plastic cases seemed like a pretty cool modern storage solution – but it just doesn’t work because they are not the right size to store power tools in, without completely wasting the space. I laid stuff out preparing to use foam and couldn’t come up with a configuration that let me put the tools, batteries, and a charger in that did anything more than store maybe 1 more tool and a few more batteries than the trays did.
The Craftsman tool bags cost all of $10 (or free with points, actually) and fit everything and then some. It doesn’t look as cool or as organized, but it makes everything easier to carry around and takes up less space.
I might have been able to make an L-Boxx-3 work, but it just wasn’t worth it to me and I decided a bag was better given the risk of breaking a plastic box. Maybe someday Sortimo will make a better multi-layer storage solution for power tools, but until then, a padded tool bag is the cheap and easy solution for me.
Stuart
The only failure I’ve seen in my L-Boxxes was with one side latch and one front latch that warped in non-environmentally-controlled storage.
Toolfreak
A latch warped just from getting hot in storage? Does Bosch even offer replacement latches to fix such issues?
I didn’t like any of the plastic, it just felt so fragile and like it was made for aesthetics rather than function and strength.
Peter
While I agree that they feel a bit fragile compared to metal boxes they hold up.
I have them for years now and they get a beating going back and forth to job sites in my truck and I have zero problems so far.
Stuart
I’m not sure. Maybe there were temperature differentials and pressure from another box, or maybe it was defective from the start and things got worse with heat and time.
Overall, though, my L-Boxxes have held up well, even with some drops and heavy transport.
KVDE
Hi Stuart,
Have you ever considered Raaco organizers?
I see these are also very expensive in the USA but they are in the same price range as the T-boxxes for the same size boxes.
You can find youtube videos of these storage boxxes where they drive a tank over them so they should be pretty durable.
I am trying to decide which system to buy into so if you could do a side by side review you would make me a very happy reader.
Stuart
I remember seeing them, or something similar, from Lee Valley, but at the time it didn’t look to fit my needs very well.
They look similar to Durham’s drawers and racks, which are less expensive but in my experience prone to shipping damage.
Jon
I really like the Allit organizers ( German-made ) sold by Lee Valley: http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=70869&cat=1,43326
Typically pick a few up whenever they have free shipping. The professional cases have clear covers with good latches, double-walled construction, handles with metal straps, stack nicely and just feel completely fit for purpose.
That said, I *think* you can purchase Sortimo T-Boxx from Inlad Truck & Van Equipment in the US now: https://www.inlad.com/sortimo-by-knapheide-t-boxx-wide-e-sbk-51012131?page_id=1000
Haven’t tried it — since I’ve sort of standardized on the Allit’s now — but worth a shot if you want to avoid the shipping charges, etc from UK or Germany.
fred
Goo info.
I don’t know if Inlad has showrooms – but Dejana (the upfitters we used ) does and their showrooms were worth a visit to get some new ideas and/or grab some parts, boxes etc. though eBay cheap prices.

Hi Stuart,
Hopefully you receive them all without any dents 🙂 I got a couple of those myself (easier to buy if you live in Belgium) but I got those black editions. I think they refer to those as the heavy duty ones even though I see no difference with the white ones (maybe better against stains?) and I’m really really pleased with those. Also got a couple of L-boxxes and the combination of those with T-boxxes is just great.
Maybe you ought to look at the following if you haven’t already. Sortimo created Work Mo and I must say, it’s great to have those on the work site. you just take them out of the van and you got an instant workbench. Easy to click etc.

If you want I can send some photo’s of my small Work Mo setup 🙂

Nice . If I were back running a business – I’be be talking to my truck/van up-fitter about the workmos to see what they might add.

Thanks!
I saw that Knapheide has a new site, but you can’t order from there, you can only request a quote.
UPS Ground isn’t too bad.
If I had seen the Sortimo US shop a few days ago, I might have ordered from there instead of Amazon UK.
But what I like about the new Sortimo store is that all sizes are the same price.

Couple of things on this, I’ve ordered quite a few tools from Amazon.de with great success. While shipping is a bit more expensive, the Euro exchange rate is much more favorable and the prices are generally cheaper on .de as well. Also, if you have a credit card that doesn’t charge for foreign transaction fees, you can choose at checkout to pay in Euros and then you won’t get charged the conversion fee from Amazon. I’ve placed probably 4 orders from .de of products ranging from Festool, Sortimo, Two Cherries, Wusthof etc. and have not had any shipping damage to date.
Jason
$100 bucks for a parts organizer seems ridiculous, I don’t care how nice it is. I got the nicest parts organizer I have ever owned from Milwaukee for $25 over the holidays. And I think $25 was a little steep. My dad used free coffee cans and mason jars…
Yadda
Primary colors and functional too. I look forward to the follow up when you receive these. I purchased some of the recommended Stanley storage boxes and they work great for me. I’m about to make a big upgrade to my shop so I’m interested in seeing the feedback on these units.

Um, Just looked through the whole Sortimo Workmo brochure and I am in love. I could see me using the hell out everything they have shown for simple and quick jobsite setup.
Check it out! Amazing stuff.

Just for fun I tried (totally successfully) to log into Amazon UK.
So the minute you get your stuff the flood gates of transatlantic Amazon shipping will likely commence.
Great fun.
Thanks for being our collective Guinea pig!

The Sortimo-shop site could be dangerous.
I just heard of another vendor with locations near Chicago, Milwaukee, and DC that might save guys money on shipping if local pickup is an option.

No kidding!
A few people wrote in about the WorkMo system, and I hadn’t taken a serious look since it’s not available here. Well, now it is, and it looks very tempting. Pricey, but hopefully its construction and quality justify it.
Dan Shelhamer
Thanks for the plug. INLAD does have these boxes in stock in the U.S.
Just go to INLAD.com and search for t-boxx or l-boxx. Or shoot me an email [email protected]
Thanks!
RC WARD
Makes for a nice article at least. Doesn’t seem to make much sense for anything else. Not a good buy to say the least. Will be interesting to see the quality of these boxes. Nice job taking one for the cause.
Gifford Meyer
I’ve been buying them in the US for two years now. I get them from a lovely rep named Zsa-Zsa over at Dejana Trucks on Long Island, NY. (631) 544-1209
Just look through the Sortimo catalog and email her which part numbers you were interested in. She will reply with the price and you can set up billing and shipping easily.
I’ve been using the T-Boxxes for a while now and I really love them. They are the strongest parts organizer I’ve ever used, they have a clear see-through top, there ultra configurable, and none of the parts shift compartments. I can recommend them highly enough.
RKA
Just a quick follow up for those that are inclined to try these. Since these were exactly what I was looking for, I ordered from amazon.de. That was before the comments were posted about US alternatives. If you can, order from the US shop, Inlad, Dejana, etc linked above, I recommend that. The cost differential is minimal with these options.
The price from Germany was $185ish with shipping fees, etc. Amazon in their infinite wisdom shipped all three T boxx’s separately from the UK. The first item in the order arrived in 3 business days by way of Germany on standard UPS. Typical Amazon packing (which is next to nothing), but ultra thin cardboard (not the kind Amazon uses stateside) which someone punched a hole through to fish out contents (I’ve seen this before with all shippers). The box was stepped on and thrown for good measure. The box was barely held together. To my surprise, the contents were still intact, so that says a little about durability.
The remaining 2 packages went by i parcel (UPS budget option). One was flagged for inspection in the UK. Detailed tracking is not available for this shipping method, but it tells me to expect them about 18 days after ordering.
I think the US based sources are very close in price and it would be a whole lot easier to resolve shipping issues. And they can’t possibly pack worse than Amazon.
Stuart
Mine arrived yesterday.
They were packed in one box, with no protection aside from shrink wrap, and a few loose screwdrivers were also in same-box. It seems that they were packaged no differently than if they were shipped locally.
There’s no damage that I can tell.
But, I agree with RKA. Now that there’s a USA source, I’m more inclined to order from them.
My Amazon UK price came out to $54 USD each, including shipping. I ordered 8 boxes, and there were a few smaller items and a Bosch saw included in the order.
I ordered them on the 3rd, they arrived on the 8th. And that includes a weekend in between.
One of the box’s flaps was torn open, but there was no damage that I can tell, or missing items.
The US price is $60 plus shipping.
RKA
Just one final update. 2.5 weeks later the third item has not arrived. Tracking shows it made it all the way to within 10 miles of my house where UPS should have handed off to USPS. A USPS tracking number was generated, however nothing after that (this was one week ago). USPS shows not found when attempting to track. I sent an inquiry to Amazon. It’s not their fault, this could have happened with a domestic delivery sent via UPS sure post. I’m sure Amazon will make it right.
Pekka
I’m a lic. General Contractor and I have used Bosch stamped L-boxes for a year now and I love’m. I have all my tools and extra batteries organized in them, makes my life much easier. Clients seem to like the “professional” look too. I get my stuff from cpotools.com. At first I thought they might be easily breakable but no, they are strong.
Luis
If it helps, they are on sale at Amazon. Shipping is not free, but ordering 2 or more will take the price down to about USD $60 each (shipping included)
