I was sitting down to find a good DIY or woodworking YouTube video to watch in the background, when my subscription page suggested a new Stanley FatMax video. I watched it, and it’s kinda weird, but also a little entertaining. That it’s Stanley UK and a British hardware store that added to the amusement.
The entire idea seems ridiculous, but I guess that’s what makes it amusing. They intentionally frustrate some customers, film it all, and then give them some free tools if they don’t snap in 5 minutes. At the end, it looks like everyone walked away with something.

Can you guess what the video aims to advertise? New FatMax tape measures that have 4m (~13 ft) “straighter” standout.

What a cool video! Thanks for sharing.

I can watch YT videos anytime, but I don’t have access to all the new tools that you do….”toolguyd” guide me to new tools we can’t get yet….please,
Stuart
Actually, there’s a new pro-grade 12V brushless framing saw hitting the market next month. It’s expected to compete with 18V, 36V, and 60V Max circular saws, and it’ll only be priced at $149 for the kit.
Details are forthcoming, but here’s the demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

Well played.

There is a very high likelihood these are all paid actors or at the very least this is scripted. There is absolutely no way Stanley Black and Decker would risk alienating their stock holders, let alone risk a public relations nightmare. Look how politically correct England has become and deeply unfortunate how the West has become as well. Some are WAY too soft these days and find anything offensive.
In addition, I strongly doubt Stanley Black and Decker would merely just give tools away without some contract or fine legal print either. While perhaps the distributor might exist, I am certain the landlord/CEO was given some incentive for hosting this. As for the products that fell on camera, either those were deemed not applicable for warranty or never actually contacted the floor.
In the highly unlikely chance this was staged, there were no incentives for anyone other than the potential for “free” tools, I strongly doubt this was tested on a large group of individuals. No for profit company wants to lose money intentionally, at least no sane company.
Find me evidence this wasn’t 100% scripted, as most, if not the vast majority of so called pranks on televised media including Youtube are either scripted or done by actors. Given how easily offended the PC crowd is, I am willing to bet Stanley Black and Decker has already received several complaints on behalf of these actors. Wouldn’t be surprised if Stanley Black and Decker United Kingdom hasn’t issued a apology via social media soon.
I’ve seen this happen more often than not. Never ever a good idea to cater to the perpetually offended crowd as nothing is ever good enough for them.
Stuart
Can’t anything be taken at face value these days?
Sometimes a silly advertising stunt is just a silly advertising stunt. Even if it’s staged with actors, does that take away from the entertainment?
Jim Felt
Agreed. We here are far too tort prone. Or butthurt.

Stuart, same could have been said about that individual making mountains out of mole hills about Makita months ago. What I’ve ascertained from the post is that isn’t a authentic prank as this is corporate sponsored allegedly and mob outrage is common with various factions of society unfortunately.
As for entertainment, well I suppose this depends on what is considered entertainment. While I strongly believe in the mentality of “to each their own”, I also found too inauthentic for me. Not offensive or anything of that nature, as I am not a moralist, nor do I believe in censorship.
Stuart
I found this video to be more bizarre than anything, and it was individual moments that struck my amusement, such as the vested guy holding his face while remarking that he only came in to buy some cement.
The individual who made a complaint about Makita few months ago was genuinely upset, at least I believed them to be, and from what I saw, they weren’t the “whine about everything” type. Mob outrage can be a problem these days, but that also doesn’t mean that individuals should keep complaints or criticisms to themselves, if they can be constructive or helpful.
Corey
I bet you’re a hoot at parties haha
Theodore
From an outsider perspective, looking at the comment made, this isn’t that person was offended, rather they foresaw how some might react and how this is likely staged. Also, this individual wasn’t calling for censorship or condoning mob rule behavior either based on the context.
As an individual and not collectively speaking, because this was most likely scripted, I am at least glad the tool industry still hasn’t fallen prey to easily outraged crowd and hopefully this never happens. Comedy is subjective, this video was striving to be comedic without pushing any agenda or propaganda.
Frankly, that is refreshing in a way as this about tools and nothing else.
Corey
My intent was purely ribbing the commentor about his extremely dry and disillusioned response to the video. Not a shot at his deeper thoughts, stances, or representations, I promise lol I thought of calling him Sir Buzz Killington, but had doubts if the reference would land. I personally found the video amusing, but enjoyed his pseudo-rant comment even more if just for it’s complete departure from the light hearteded good video within out batting an eye haha
Big Adam
Sorry fella, you’re 100% wrong and 100% blinkered by living in a grossly-litigious country.
This is clearly a genuine video of average UK-Joe-Tradesmen falling for a good old-fashioned wind-up.
Jason
Sounds like you’re the easily offended one chap.

“This is both cringeworthy and hysterical!
Then I realized it could be a very different result here in the US.
And all savvy marketers know exactly what I mean.
Some of those guys were pretty agitated. Leading to possibly what kind of overreaction if conducted here?
So we get no prizes like the less paranoid Brits. Etc. Etc.

Hi Maxwell & others
I was involved in the making of this and nothing was scripted. The STAFF are indeed actors/comedians and even their lines were ad libbed.
Needless to say not all the customers made the final cut, some were more successful than others!
Thanks for the positive comments, we had a lot of fun & rather cringe-worthy moments filming it.
