Swanson-Mini-Surface-Level

Swanson’s mini surface level is suitable for two-axis leveling tasks that do not quite require extreme precision.

This type of level is extremely easy to use – hold or fasten it to a workpiece that needs to be horizontally parallel, and then adjust the workpiece until the level’s bubble is perfectly centered.

Although this level can be used on tables and appliances, it really earns its spot in the toolbox when used with workpieces that have very little horizontal surface area, such as wooden posts.

The Swanson surface level will set you back $5-6. Swanson describes this as “homeowner” grade, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

Now, what advantages would this have over, say, a small torpedo level? That’s the first thing I would grab if I had a fence post to level, and a table is big enough for a longer level. I’m not trying to be dense, but that’s what popped into my head. Is it the fact that can get get both axes level without having to move the tool, as you would with a torpedo?

The main advantage of the surface level is that it can level in multiple directions without having to move it around in different directions, that’s all. You can check X and Y directions at once via a single bubble, whereas with a traditional level you’ll have adjust for each direction separately.
