ToolGuyd Misc Tool Talk and Social Media Weekly Summary (10/28/2019)

I hope you’re having a great Monday morning!

This week: I’m clearing up some workspaces to prep for a chaotic holiday season, testing some new tools that we’ll be covering in November, and shopping for a new pipe vise – likely a small Ridgid bolt-on chain vise.

I researched opinions on yoke-style vs. chain-style pipe vises, and it seems to be a very polarizing preference, with chain vises winning out for versatility. But, yoke-style seem to offer greater holding power if you’re only working with pipes. If you use a pipe vise, do you have any style preferences?

Local @homedepot has 150 @boschtoolsna spade bit sets on display for Pro Black Friday 2019. They might even have more boxes up top. I will not be buying any this year, or at least I probably won't. I kind of over-stockpiled last year. 😳 #tools #bosch #boschtools #homedepot #contractor #diyer #drilling #tooldeals

Bought this twin pack of @empirelevel levels last year, and they work nicely together for leveling desks and tables and what-not. I bought a similar set years ago, but wanted to upgrade to TrueBlue. Put together a new @ikeausa desk. The Bekant is very shoddy compared to my old Galant, but should do the trick for my immediate needs. I will eventually build a nicer desk for this space, and move this one to the basement – if it can handle it. My old Ikea Galant went together with fasteners, this one has plastic push connectors that will require a trim puller to disassemble. *shakes head* #tools #level #measuring #ikea #empirelevel #milwaukeetools

Who else has a pair of round nose pliers? I use mine for electronics work, misc stuff (which I guess is how I bent one of the tips) and paracord knotting in place of a spike. #tools #pliers #paracord #jewelrymaking #maker #arduino

See anything you like? @homedepot looks to have kicked off their holiday deal displays with a couple of @dewalttough special buys. I'm not terribly impressed yet, but it's still October. We should see a lot more after Halloween. #tools #toolguyd #dewalt #dewalttools #homedepot #contractor #tooldeals

That's a lot of @milwaukeetool Packout tool boxes at the local @homedepot . Once holiday prices go into effect, the combos are gonna roll out of stores FAST, new owners in tow. #tools #milwaukeetools #homedepot #toolbox #tooldeals

Found some @milwaukeetool Holiday 2019 special buys at @homedepot already. M18 compact brushless drill kit for $99. Yes, please. Great drill, good kit configuration. I saw one guy carrying one of these kits to his truck along with aome other new tool purchases. If you needed a compact drill today, how likely are you to buy this promo kit? Me? It'd likely be between this kit or the @dewalttough Atomic, with red in the lead just a little. #tools #milwaukeetools #homedepot #tooldeals #drills #contractor #diyer #maker

Okay, who borrowed my @weratoolrebels ratchet?! Either one of my kids took it without permission, which they're not old enough to do yet (but sometimes still happens), or I misplaced it. I'm sure it'll turn up, I'll search intensely for it tonight. I love this set, bought it a few years ago. #tools #wrenching #wera #ratchet

The @harborfreight 20V Hercules drill is only a few dollars more than the 12V. Wasn't in stock, but I did snag the new 12V for review. The "buy what you want" configurations sounds good in theory, but tool + battery + charger hurts the first time. HF needs some starter kits. #newtools #tools #drills #harborfreight

Icon tools are now at @harborfreight . I bought a ratchet and socket set for review. Saw the wrenches, but passed on them for now. #newtools #tools #wrenching #mechanics #harborfreight

My @homedepot has @ridgidpowertools 12" miter saws for less than the 10". Gotta love retail. I understand why – they're trying to move the 12" saws – but this always confuddles me a bit. #tools #mitersaw #woodworking #ridgidtools #homedepot

Took my daughter to @loweshomeimprovement and @homedepot yesterday on a "let's see what's new" trip and supply run. She loved the animated halloween decorations, and especially this gag electrical box. I wonder if I can make my own for next year, but rated for outdoors use. Anything I could make would likely cost more in parts though. I think this was $22. @worldofelectricians – have you seen this happen in real life yet? #tools #electrical #halloweendecor

Shall I continue with these Monday morning “social media tool talk” roundups, at least as long as there’s new content?

Can anyone think of a better headline? “Last Week on ToolGuyd Social Media, Tool Talk” seems somewhat awkward, doesn’t it? I’ll try a different one today: “ToolGuyd Misc Tool Talk and Social Media Weekly Summary.”

Continue please. My only social media that I use most days is Instagram and I can say that the algorithm didn’t show me half of those posts.

Nothing wrong with ToolGuyd Weekly Roundup. To the point. Casual readers may only want a weekly thing as well. Something ‘deal’ oriented probably gets more clicks.

The no kits for Hercules is a turnoff for me. Having a set to start is great. I have been looking for some decent home owner 12V tools to go along with my good but bulky ryobi 18V. Right now I’m leaning Rigid, or Skil. That said at the right price i would give Hercules a roll of the dice. A few weeks ago the local HF had some display 12V drivers on clearance for 35 bucks and I almost pulled the trigger but the pricing on the charger and a 2nd batt turned me off.
