Did you know that Makita makes air tools? This is something that I tend to forget, and I assume the same is true for most of you. That’s why their 2-inch brad nailer is this week’s unfamiliar tool of the week.
The 18-gauge 5/8″ to 2″ AF505 brad nailer features a 100-nail magazine, quick release nail guide cam-lock for easy jam clearing, tool-free depth adjustment, aimable exhaust port, rubberized grip, adjustable belt hook, low nail indicator, and a standard quick release hose connection.

It’s also priced quite fair at $80-90. The kit comes with the tool, a small bottle of oil, a spare non-marring tip, safety goggles, and a tool case.

If you are looking…
to spend less, consider the Hitachi NT50AE2 ($60).
to spend a little more, consider the Ridgid R213BNA (magnesium housing).
for cordless brad nailer, consider the Ryobi Airstrike (built-in air generation).
I haven’t looked at the Makita 2″ brad nailer before today, but it seems like a decent option. User reviews seem to be positive. If any readers have experience with this model, please share your opinion of it!

We were introduced to Makita pneumatic tools when we bought their AN611 Coil Siding Nailer in 2006 (http://www.amazon.com/Makita-AN611-4-Inch-2-Inch-Siding/dp/B00004YOJU)
At that time – we thought that it was best in class and have found it to be well worth the $350 we paid for it – such that we bought a second. Unlike battery-operated tools – where a desire to limit chargers and batteries often also influences our buying choices – with air tools I have less brand loyalty – and try to buy what I think (at the time of purchase) best suits the job and will perform best for us. My pneumatic tool lineup is fairly eclectic and includes tools from : Bostitch, Cadex, Chicago Pneumatic, Cleco, Copco, Dotco, DuoFast, Dynabrade, Grex, Hitachi, Hutchins, Ingersoll-Rand, Makita, Malco, Mangone, Porter Cable, PortaNails, Powernail, Senco, Sullair and Taylor Pneumatic. And – this is not to slight other brands like Bosch who have recently entered the field
