New Worx XTD Extended Reach Cordless Screwdriver

Worx XTD Screwdriver

Two years ago, Worx came out with a “semi-automatic” cordless screwdriver that worked with removable bit cartridges. It was actually a semi-decent cordless screwdriver, and I liked it better than the Skil 360 Quick Select screwdriver that I reviewed.

Now, just in time for the 2014 winter holiday shopping season, Worx has come out with their XTD cordless screwdriver, model WX252L. The XTD features an extending bit chuck that allows you to reach fasteners in tight spaces.

The screwdriver can work with the shaft in the extended or fully retracted positions. There are actually 9 positions that the extending shaft can lock into, with a full extension range of 0 to 2″.

It features a built-in 4V Max 1.5Ah Li-ion battery that recharges in 5 hours, a 2-finger trigger switch, nylon composite housing, smooth rubber handle grip, LED work light, and forward/reverse switch.

The motor can deliver up to 36 in-lbs of torque and no-load speed of 230 RPM. Worx also designed the XTD with an automatic spindle lock, which means you can turn the driver manually for extra torque, or to finish a quick task when the battery needs a full recharge.

Each kit comes with the cordless screwdriver, a charger, and 6 screwdriver bits (Phillips #0, #1, #2; Slotted #6; Torx T15, T20).

Price: $35-40

Here’s a Worx demo video that shows you how it works:

First Thoughts

The offset bit holder seems like a great idea, as it should offer improved fastener access in tight spaces. The bit extender seems like a good idea as well, but it doesn’t seem to do much more than can be accomplished with a standard bit extension.

Now, if Worx managed to design this screwdriver with their semi-automatic screwdriver’s bit cartridge system – then I would totally be impressed.

One thing that I cannot quite shake is the name. XTD. I’m guessing that they took this from the longer extended reach driver part of the product name. Extend led to XTD. But I cannot hear or say XTD without hearing something else. I can imagine it now – So what did you get your friend/relative/significant other? An XTD! Or… I’m headed out to the hardware store, I need to get so-and-so and XTD!

In any case, from what I’ve seen with Worx’s other similarly designed cordless screwdriver, the XTD Extended Reach Driver should be a decent product, at least as far as holiday-timed tool gifts go.

Actually I was originally thinking XKCD my favorite web comic. But now you are making me think of something else. I am just going to keep repeating XKCD until the other image is out of my mind.

I don’t think I want an XTD, but this does look like a good around the house screwdriver. Before I invested in my M12 set, I had a B&D VPX (slightly better three-letter combination) driver. I used it a surprising amount.

Do you know how it charges? If someone ever makes a little 4v driver that charges with an ubiquitous mini USB plug, I’m sold.

The Skil 260 used a micro USB jack for charging, and comes with a charger. You can charge the tool with any USB power source and cable, as well as use the provided charger ton other things.
