They sent over a consumer newsletter today, and it featured Craftsman gear I had never seen before.

There are plenty of tools and gear on my Craftsman wishlist. But what could this be?!

Oh. A Craftsman smokeless fire pit. It lets you “enjoy super-charged heat with barely any smoke.”
Nearly 8-1/2 years ago, after purchasing the Craftsman tool brand, Stanley Black Decker said they will be localizing as much manufacturing as possible and will focus on U.S. manufacturing, using global materials, with the confidence that this will grow the Craftsman brand.
I’m not sure how fire pits and products like water heaters help to fulfill that promise, but I hope that they do.

This has been around a while – at least a couple of years. Lowe’s has carried it and it was on sale at one point around Christmas for maybe $200 or even less.

We actually bought the black-coated version that’s currently a higher price back around Black Friday last year when it was on sale for about $80. It’s been a good unit as far as these things go. It hasn’t rusted out and it burns the wood efficiently enough. It isn’t as nice as our friends’ $500 solo stove version but we also have $420 more that we can use for firewood…
We ordered the bare stainless I listed above to throw in the truck to take with us when we go camping or to other events. Cheap enough that if it gets messed up, we aren’t overly upset.

And it has been one of the constants in retail, that once you look past ” US brand X ” tfor something that could be generic and which likely outsourced it or just had something name stamped / rebranded. There is good chance that the identical product is there via some generic / lettersoup brand.

Solo Stoves are pricey but they work well and are durable. They are also easy to clean and tend to come with nice accessories.

Why do people care so much about an old store label that was always slapped on OEM tools? I have plenty of classic craftsman tools. They were always just fine, and they were never made by craftsman. I see no reason to worry or whine about what a new owner is doing with the brand.

I’ll keep the old truck rim that cost nothing for a fire pit. It burns better than any commercial fire pit I’ve been around.
I guess the bright red tankless units might appeal to some people. From a company that doesn’t know the first damn thing about tankless water heaters…..

Old school split rims aka “suicide” rims are great for fire pits. Just make sure you don’t get too close to the fumes on the first burn as it’s probably hazardous old lead paint.

The fact that they didn’t make it look like a giant socket is highly disappointing. I guess that’s one thing that sets them apart from snap on. Always missing an opportunity for novelty merch.

I know the discussion is more about the branding than the item, but the smokeless ones I have been near do not radiate heat very well so you have to stand near it to feel the heat out from the top opening.

I’ve noticed that too. I did see solo makes what I’ll call a flying saucer that sits about 2 feet off the top of the solo stove. I guess it’s supposed to radiate heat out towards you. Seems like a sound idea I don’t know how much it works though.
I don’t own a solo (Use an old truck split rim). But I will say their accessories look pretty nice and well built. They make a heavy metal ring about 6” deep maybe 1/4” thick that goes around the top of the stove and is used for cooking. A round griddle of sorts. Looks pretty cool.
