Dewalt DWMT81535 247pc Mechanics Tool Set

Over at Amazon, today’s Deal of the Day features a selection of Dewalt mechanics hand tools, including several of their latest and greatest tool sets. The new tool sets have a new slim-head ratchet.

These look to be very good deals, although I do wish there were more SKUs included in the promo.

The impact hex socket set looks very appealing, I just wish it was available in a smaller drive size. Tools like that would be great in a hand-socket configuration, too. I love my PB Swiss hex sockets, but they’re not available in inch sizing.

  • 3/8″ ratchet: $10.99
  • 1/2″ ratchet: $13.99
  • 10pc SAE combination wrench set: $27.99
  • 12pc SAE flexible ratcheting wrench set: $94.99
  • 84pc mechanics tool set: $39.99
  • 247pc mechanics tool set: $109.99
  • 10pc 3/8″ drive universal metric socket set: $47.99
  • 15pc SAE and metric 1/2″ drive impact hex socket set: $84.99

Buy Now(via Amazon)

Items must be sold and shipped by Amazon. Deal ends at 3am ET 12/13/2017, unless supplies sell out sooner.

There’s also a 205pc set that’s discounted from its regular price, but not as low priced as an earlier deal of the day. Still, it might be worth a look if you cannot justify stepping up to the $110 247pc set.

I had just bought a Tektron 3/8″ ratchet the other day and then this Dewalt one came up so I bought it as well. It will probably go into the grab & go bag.

Dewalt ratchets are pretty good. I’m eager to get my hands on the new slimmer one, and I don’t think the lack of a quick-release button will bother me. The ones on sale here have the quick release.

Interesting point about the quick release. Last week when I was browsing through ratchet pages on Amazon, back and forth :-), I noticed that the more expensive ratchets don’t have that feature.

This is an attractive deal, and this set is manufactured in Taiwan. I so don’t need any more socket sets but this is tempting to jump on if I can dream up a justification in the next few hours.

My problem is paying for the 23lbs of volumetric shipping costs.

Sorry, I’m not following. Do you not qualify for Amazon Prime (free) shipping?

I do Damon but I then have to ship it via a courier to South Africa. I lust over all the big heavy stuff like vises, lathes, 20″ jointers etc.

A 24lb parcel, 8 inches high by 16 inches long by 10 inches wide will cost me $151 shipping plus import duties and tax.

Does anyone have a picture of the inside of the 84-piece set? I looked for one, and came up empty. I’m on the fence about that one. It’s a really useful combination of sizes and tools, but I have lots of tools.

It does make a lot of sense as a gift for someone who’s just getting into wrenching.

These cases are typically blow-molded, if that’s what you’re asking.

Yep, that’s one question. DeWalt does (or did, anyway) use injection molded plastic for some of their cases. My small 3/8” set is injection molded with individual socket holders that flip out from two chrome rails. Its handy because I’ve been able to store several more things in there, extensions and adapters.

I’m also wondering about the quality of the hinges and latches (metal pins?) as well as how the sockets are held in place, especially in the upper half of the clamshell. One of the Amazon reviews for the larger DeWalt sets complains that it’s impossible to open it without things falling out.

My friend ordered the 84pc set last week when it was $45 (super darn, guess she should have waited). It’s supposed to arrive today, she’s gonna take some pics, which I’ll post.

It’d have to be a way better deal for me to get mechanics tools that I can’t warranty in store easily.

Do you often have socket/ratchet failures?

I’m not sure what stores you have around, but Blain’s Farm and Fleet carries open stock DeWALT mechanics tools in these parts. Swap out is quick and easy. Besides, the no questions asked warranty by simply calling the toll free number should be more then efficient.

I have the DeWalt 205 piece set I got on sale from Homedepot a year ago for $80. I keep it on my truck and it’s been very handy. The reviews that state the sockets fall out… Are they opening it upside down? Because the sockets that are push fit are stuck in there so tight I almost can’t remove them without something to pry them out.

    Pros:
Cheap set of tools with a decent array of sockets

T-25 bit was stuck in a 7mm marked bit and 1/2″ socket would turn 3/4 before binding a little, I called Dewalt, they answered promptly, I told them the two problems and they asked for my address and sent out a brand new bit and wrench in packaging. No questions asked, didn’t even want a picture to verify. It was an American I spoke to, or else someone with really good English.

    Cons:
The ratchets are very fat, not preferable when working in a tight spot, also short so leverage isn’t as good as it could be.
The set only includes a few wrenches up to 14mm
The Allen wrench case keeps falling out everytime I open the case

I wouldn’t spend more than $100 for it, but the lifetime no hassle warranty is nice since the tools might have some quality issues. Good throw in truck set, not a good mechanic set since it’s missing some important pieces and the ratchets are too fat.

    My $0.02.
